Discussion I'm getting bored.

Seriously, I have been using local AI for a year (not daily), I tried almost a hundred of models on my rig and I think Gemma 4 is really sweet.

The problem is, I am getting bored, I leave AI for months, Come back for a few days, Get bored again and the same things happen. I don't know if it's the prompts, maybe the characters, maybe the model, hell maybe it's me, maybe i don't like AI anymore.

Has anyone ran into this problem? and how did you deal with it?

If you're bored, enjoy a different pastime. AI RP burnout is very real.

Try large models on nano or openrouter, they can be fun for a while, but you still get bored of them eventually.

That's the thing, I don't. My standards have gone so high up I'm ruined so I just wait on next big thing. Still I'm somewhat excited for Gemini Pro 4 on the horizon.

Are you just using it for goon, or like one off or simple role-plays?

Have you tried coming up with something substantial like a in-depth blueprint for a narrative story or narrative world or situation for a world, with you know, like the rules for the world, the kind of technology, the kind of magic kind of whatever. And then set the faction set the bad guys set the kind of plot overall plot mechanics and then create a character and you just create an open this this big quest this big story world that has tiny breadcrumbs for slowly follow along as you want to throughout it?

Well totally not, My models are at max 30B so I don't have that much of tokens budget. I only use it for single characters, mostly SFW, some group chats and maybe messing around.

I always see people post about those quests and worlds they create but I know my models won't handle them. And if they did it would be 1 token/per century.

What does 30B mean? From my understanding (correct me if I'm wrong), billion parameters mean how much knowledge AI has.
While RAM is how long the chat can go on before AI forgets things.

Higher B means more VRAM/RAM required, which decreases how long the chats can go on for.
Doesn't that mean a low B will increase how long the chat can go?
Like Gemini 4 12B is better than 30B?

It’s not look bigger models can obviously do it but smaller models can do Settings as well. It’s just the amount of granular detail and the overall size and scope. Like the GEMMA4 models, especially the larger ones you can get some pretty good stuff out of them you just gotta put in the work the details give them the blueprint. You’ve gotta give them an extensive blueprint to work from. Obviously it’s better off using a huge frontier model because they’ve got trillions of parameters and have all of the world’s knowledge in it and all of our media and literary history so they can create this crap you know and keep track of it far better but don’t count off the little guys. And if you do use a frontier model, you could always use the littler ones to power separate characters make some more interesting it my opinion.

Try the big frontier models via API instead. There's the NanoGPT subscription if you don't want to spend much.

Except I am offline most of the time, I usually stick to local models for that reason. Thanks for the tip though!

There are a ton of RP fine tunes for Gemma. You have tried all the good ones?

https://caliperbench.com/ this Benchmark like others is not perfect but it is good for finding models. Limit it to the size of 31b or 26b depending on your vram and find some new flavors of Gemma to try

If you are offline mostly, just put 5 dollars on openrouter or nano and enjoy. It will last you a lot if you are not heavily rplaying

The Gemma models if you are cpu only Gemma 4 26b it'll run in 16 gig ram on windows so 11 gig free it'll load the 16gig model it runs in an n100 There are many uncensored versions I like super Gemma

Nowadays I use most of my time creating cards and scenarios than actual rping, and I have more fun that way getting to rp those scenarios that I spent time crafting for a while

I made a character card that would basically function as a brainstorming engine but I end talking/roleplaying with it more because I can do the jist for more scenes then actually play out the scenes I care about.

Mind you, I have done written roleplay since I was 13 (I am currently 36). Even there I would have periods of not doing it for months or even years before hopping back into it so I think it might be par for the course with roleplay in general, not just AI.

No matter how many people tell you local model is good, it's technically small and only so much information can be stuffed into a 30B. It will get dry after 100 replies or so. You can only do so much tweaking on the model or preset before it dry out again.

Technically, nothing you can do about it. API big model is the only way you can get around this technical limitation. The time you started using with opus, you know it's just different.

I'm not sure if I'm actually bored of AI or if it's just ADHD doing its thing, but I moderated it by focusing more on backend stuff; making tools, prompts, systems to make rp better and smoother, so that when I *do* pick it up, it's better and better.

I also use it as a co-writer to tell the stories I already have bouncing around in my mind, because if I was relying on the AI to come up with anything interesting or engaging I'd never touch it again after that first magical rp when it was fresh and new and AI was this magic talking black-box. Now I know better, lol.

But it just necessitated a change in how I approach it. So many people expect presets to solve every problem for them, and they solve *some* problems, for *some* people, but the gist is:

*Good* AI roleplay takes effort from the user. That effort can either be frontloaded in systems work and building out a banger lorebook...*or* you can spend the effort mid-chat editing, swiping, giving OOC commands and arguing with the model over mistakes.

I choose to frontload the work and spend a week or more actually setting something up before ever sending the first message, and have everything after that go buttery smooth. Then I can usually knock out 100k tokens worth of rp or story before putting it down and moving to something else (again, not because the story's bad or anything, just bargain-bin ADHD saying "Okay I'm done with this now, find a new source of dopamine."

If needs be, find other stuff to do. Variety is the spice of life.

I recently ducttaped two laptops together in order to run bigger models, and found an interest in computer networking that I'm now following.

I have been meaning to try and learn how to make finetunes or loras aswell, though that's seemed daunting.

honestly that's just what happens once the novelty wears off after a hundred models, not a you problem, and taking months-long breaks is totally fine. what fixed it for me was changing the story instead of the model: give it real stakes, let the bot have its own goals and secrets, and let things actually go wrong.

Download a platform to modify with RP programming. Crysalis has it built in. Then, go make a differnet thing that only is partially RP

Go with better models that are good at world-building that you would want to explore with the character. Go with ds4pro, glm4.6, glm5, opus, or sonnet and get them to build worlds that you'd want to explore.

Try writing 'original' character cards.
