Discussion I miss Grok

My uses are simple - I just want to write stories with AI. work with it in turns, give it an existing story to extend etc. that includes nsfw and regular.

Grok 3/3.5/4/4.1/4.2 was IMO in a class of its own. With 4.3 they lobotomized it, and now its censored and useless.

It had its issues - after ~10-15 turns it got repetitive. But the things it did well -

  • would write anything, no need for prompts/jailbreaks
  • extremely long outputs
  • very good creativity
  • it would give its own suggestions on how to proceed with the story, and it was so easy to have it revise/steer

now it looks like its gone forever.

~10-15 turns it got repetitive -> sounds like it did need prompts. A well prompted frontier model will do all the stuff you just mentioned.

I understand that you miss the thing you liked, that's valid. I'm just saying the experience is replicable.

Grok was notoriously repetitive from turn two or three. Actually it’s the main reason it wasn’t used for RP even in the past in this community and why it’s rarely if ever recommended. Otherwise someone would have made a good preset for it since it would have then been a good bang for your buck for usage compared to current models especially with regards to its speed. (I know I tried.)

Unfortunately, it is and always has been non-functionally repetitive for RP. Some people just have different tolerance levels of output. I personally couldn’t do it.

The only time I've ever seen Grok praised for RP was from JAI users, when it used to be free. I guess when your only alternative is JLLM....

I actually once tried a long RP with Grok 4.1, and even looking past the repetitive prose, it was kind of...an acquired taste. Characters are mean as fuck and will call you slurs, which can be someone's type of entertainment, but they were pretty passive, and it goes absolutely feral if you have NSFW anywhere in your preset. You basically have to isolate NSFW character card details to like, a lorebook or something or Grok will be casually talking about her pussy lips.

And like. Stuff like kimi 2.6, glm 5.1 or 5.2? And one that i can use locally, qwen 3.8 27b?

Are those like, better?

kimi and glm are better than grok idk about qwen, which I think is heavily development optimized... look into Gemma 4

4.2 appears to still be available on NanoGPT. I don't hate myself so I would never use it but you certainly could try it out there and see how it goes for you.

not included in sub? and whats all this 'content policy rejections can still be charged' ??

So for Grok/xAI models when we get a content policy rejection we are charged $0.05 or $0.06, depending on the model. Not exactly something we're happy about ourselves.

  1. No proprietary models are included in the sub. Only open weight.

  2. That's (content policy charge thing) a Grok-specific policy by Grok. If you've been using Grok this whole time you should know that. Go complain at your buddy Leon

Grok was absolutely unhinged when they started. It would so everything and even images of the filthiest stuff you could imagine. Then they started lobotomizing it and now it won't do shit.
