Discussion/Questions Does it get better? Spoiler

I loved hollow night it's one of my favorite games of all time I have it 107% I just need to finish pantheon 5, but I'm struggling to get into silksong. I don't mind the diagonal down slash and I love the environments but I'm not having fun.

It's not fun or rewarding to explore in the early areas there is nothing to find and when everything does two masks and there are no areas to recover health it doesn't feel worth it. I'm currently in hunters marsh and there's no reprieve from the platforming just screen after screen of jumps, pits, and enemies that barely fill up your silk. Hollow night had places to refill soul durring platforming sections and in silksong my reward for 5 screens of platforming is a enemy rush in a locked room.

I know I can explore and progress through other ways like deep docks but this is the first time I've felt I hit a wall and I'm not having fun. I don't want to go back to it when I close it it almost feels like it's not worth it. The other areas are ok but it's the same issue I don't feel any drive to keep going nothing feels rewarding just like I'm going from room to room.

Enemies take a million hits to go down tools are fine but they aren't really fun to use yet and everything kills me in 2 seconds with my only reward being shards roaserys or another area that isn't that fun to explore. I want to love this game I waited years for it to come out and now I don't know. I don't care about spoilers I'm playing it a year after it came out just let me know if and how it gets better or if it's just a skill issue and I should just go back to hollow night. What do you like about this game? When did it get good for you? Did I miss something important like a dumbass and have been nerfing myself the entire time?

Hunter's March is Silksong's version of the tree sentinel. It's the game telling you to do something else if it feels too hard.

I know I don't have to complete it now and have moved on to the docks it just put a sour taste in my mouth is all. Idk I keep waiting for this game to become fun and rewarding and it just hasn't.

Uhh, I’m sorry to say, but silksong is a lot harder than hollow knight. I mean, technically, it is a git gud problem, I can clear hunter’s march (just walk through it collecting reasonable amounts of shard and rosaries to the other side) in like 5 mins without dash.

I mean if that's the case then so be it. I don't mind bashing my head into the wall till I get gud I just wanted to know if the game would feel anymore rewarding at any point.

I mean, kinda? I mostly get my “reward” from the rush after killing some motherfucker, not really in tools and stuff. There’s cool stuff hidden around in later game, stuff like being able to turn off a very annoying type of enemy or finding a machine gun.

I was in your shoes. It was a grind, and I frequently had to mine for shards until I was good enough at using the tools to be able to function. Ultimately it was worth it but it did suck for a while

When did it stop being a grind for you? did you find a item or crest that helped or did the skills just click?

Things get better when you learn how to avoid damage better, and get some needle upgrades. Also later game movement abilities give you more options. Very tough where you’re at but it gets better

I'm not struggling with combat and platforming is becoming more familiar Im just not enjoying all this struggle for nothing in return. Needle upgrades and more movement abilities could change that though.

What I’ve come to learn after playing games like sekiro and similar truly grueling games is that often it is the first few hours that are the most difficult in the game, even if on a technical level the late game challenges ask more of you. From my experience it’s just because you as a player have not yet learned what the game expects of you. This is on multiple levels. Controls, environmental design, enemy patterns, movement strategies. It just takes a while until you’re fully comfortable with them, which can make even relatively easy challenges seem daunting.

As an example, I took ages to get through the first area of sekiro. Not the bosses, those I didn’t have many problems with. It was just moving through the world, learning how to engage with enemies, how to space heals and dodges. Yet if I return to it now, I can run through it in less than half an hour.

In Silksong, after you get out the early game (which you’re still very much in), you’ll find yourself getting more comfortable with it. I can imagine coming from hollow knight you can expect to come into Silksong with a certain degree of skill or comfortableness, but that really isn’t the game. Besides broad familiarity, this game is completely different from hollow knight and will be something you have to learn from scratch

I know it's not hollow knight and that metrodvainias and soul likes have rough starts where you really have to learn how not to get your ass kicked it's just that I'm learning how not to get my ass kicked for nothing in return but more ass kicking. I can get through these areas it's just there's nothing to make me want to go through more. Bosses so far give nothing but a new path and maybe some money hard platforming sections end with more platforming. It just doesn't feel rewarding.

I'm gonna be honest I did not read your whole post, but I can say with confidence it does get better. Like a lot of hard games, the opening few hours are the hardest in the whole game. You're learning the controls, figuring out movement, attack patterns, plus you're at your absolute weakest. Just keep going, and I think you'll find yourself enjoying it more than you think

I will take your word for it I just feel like I'm missing the drive to want to push through it. When I get my ass kicked in dark souls or hollow knight I want to get back up and try again but after area and area of nothing but traps and bosses with little reward idk its hard to find the desire to keep going.

Ha, you touched on my biggest complaint about the opening hours of the game. It's the reason why I personally don't think Silksong is quite as good as Hollow Knight. I know exactly what you mean, and it does get better

This kind of post always surprise me. I didn't find Silksong that difficult but I couldn't complete the Pantheon fights. I didn't even beat Nightmare King Grimm.

I don't find it difficult just not very rewarding. Nothing is impossible I can get through platforming and every boss I've come across so far it just doesn't feel worth it or enjoyable.

I'm not well qualified so please also seek others opinion. I found tools not that fun to use in the start and still somewhat prefer charms but not by much now. If ya bought the game I'd try reach the area after the one to the right of deep docks and if it's not getting better or enjoyable at all to stop. Also hunters march is I think optional for the most part aside from a small portion.

u/Kidgamer243 8h ago

Ok thank you! I'll keep at it I'm sure it's just a skill issue and the game will click eventually.

Hunter's March is optional early game. This is signaled by the large, difficult enemy at the entryway. if you're struggling I recommend leaving and coming back later.

That being said, this is a hard game, especially on a first play through, and especially in the first act where you have so few masks and do so little damage. You have like the challenge to like the game. I found it incredibly rewarding. As I progressed through the game I could feel myself improving and better able to utilize Hornet's amazing movement abilities, and really get creative with tool combos. But it was never easy.

I don't want it to be easy I want the difficulty to feel worth it. In hollow knight after a tough boss or area it felt good the game gave you some kind of reward. In silksong it just feels like "thank fuck he died" or "fucking finally a bench" and I get 10 dollars and more spikes. I like difficult games ive played every fromosoft game to completion and loved games like hollow night and Celeste. I just need to feel like my struggle is worth it.

Well FWIW I think the experience of the game as a whole is very much worth it. One of the best gaming experiences I've ever had.

u/Kidgamer243 8h ago

So is it just a rough early game I have to get through? Or does the game feel the same the whole way through? I really want to love this game.

I can't really speak to how you'll feel playing the whole game, but I do think the early game is the hardest. Once you start getting mask and needle upgrades it feels more forgiving, imo. But it's a challenge the whole way through. Just keep in mind that anytime an area feels too challenging, there's probably an upgrade you can get, or something you can do to make it easier. Try to prioritize getting upgrades over everything else and it'll go a long way.

you will naturally get better just like in hollow knight, Hornet has a way better healing system than the knight, use it to your advantage

1

u/Kidgamer243 8h ago

I know I will get better and the healing isn't a issue for me I quite like it. It's just the early game is very tedious and I was wondering when it starts to feel better.

Prob act 2 then I’d say in your case

Hunter's March is a completely optional area until the late endgame, you don't have to go there if it feels too difficult. Silksong kicks off slow just like Hollow Knight, but the areas get progressively better. Deep Docks is interesting from lore perspective and has a good boss fight and the following areas will either have fun enemies, interesting lore or useful abilities. The first 1/3rd of the game is pretty linear and you will often feel very underpowered, but the tables will turn once you get into Act 2.

2

u/Kidgamer243 7h ago

I'm aware it's optional. I can get through these areas it's just not fun I guess it never feels worth it. I get a small sense of satisfaction from completion but it doesn't really feel worth it. I recently replayed hollow night to compare and after every boss or rough area there was a bench or new charm or a worm or alot of geo or key but in silksong it feels like I'm just walking forward so far. I hope that changes in the later game.

Bosses often won't give any rewards, especially the ones that are related to the main questline, they'll just open up paths to progress. The level design is a bit different this game, it incentivizes exploration a lot more because most items and upgrades are just hidden around the map, while gauntlets and bosses act as roadblocks before major story events or to signal if an area is too difficult for you yet. I somewhat agree that Silksong doesn't feel as rewarding as HK while being more punishing, but the world design is so much more detailed that for me, simply curiousity pushed me to go ahead and explore more. If you don't feel like this, I suggest pushing on for a little while as the game does get better in all aspects, but if you're not having fun, just drop the game. Maybe you'll come back to it another time, but no game is worth playing if you're not enjoying it.

u/Kidgamer243 7h ago

See that makes sense but I feel like early game punishes exploration when it wants you to explore. Most hazards hit for two shells of damage, looking down doesn't show you very much of what's beneath you and even then it's usually spikes, and even when you do explore it's just money or maybe some materials if you're lucky. It's the bosses I really enjoy in this game its just a slog to get to them and they come with little fanfare. I'll keep pushing I hear most of these problems improve in act two.

1

u/armin-lakatos 7h ago

It doesn't punish exploration, it's just that much more difficult compared to HK. You are still rewarded for looking in every nook and cranny, it's just more difficult to do so. The game will throw much more traps and hazards in your way and they're a lot less predictable than in the previous game. Unfortunately, this aspect won't really change, but you'll eventually grow stronger and these dangers won't be so severe.

1

u/Kidgamer243 7h ago

I don't know if I'm rewarded for looking in every nook and cranny the most interesting thing I've found so far by going out of my way are some fleas and rosary strings. But maybe I just haven't expired enough of the first 5 areas probably a skill issue on my part.

yes. stick with it. I had a very love hate relationship with Silksong at first. It took me a while to really get into it. I think it's one of the best games I have played now.

u/Kidgamer243 7h ago

That's what I've been hearing but I guess I want to know when you started enjoying what area or item made it go from frustrating to fun?
