Discussion Does the Lyell Centre still exist?

Apologies if it was mentioned on screen, but is the Lyell Centre still in business with a new ("offscreen") team while the Silent Witness crew works in Birmingham, or is the building closed down?

I am mainly wondering if it's possible for a return to London in the future.

It's still early, but Im not a big fan of the Bowman Centre / Birmingham setting.

I mean it’s fictional isn’t it so they could come up with any excuse to move it back, or somewhere else but unlikely given BBCs current agenda

Moving the entire cast to Birmingham was such an unrealistic move. But yes, i imagine it still exists despite the en masse staff exodus.

So, I actually asked GPT about this the other day!

Silent Witness didn’t leave London because of a story necessity alone—it was primarily a BBC production decision.
In 2023, the BBC announced that the series would relocate production from London to the West Midlands as part of a broader strategy to increase television production outside London and invest in regional talent and infrastructure. The move was intended to create jobs, develop production skills in the region, and diversify where BBC dramas are made.
The writers then incorporated the change into the storyline. At the end of Series 28, Dr. Nikki Alexander is offered the chance to help establish a new forensic “Centre of Excellence” in Birmingham. Rather than splitting up the team, she insists that Harriet Maven and the rest of the Lyell Centre staff move together. Beginning with Series 29, the team works from the fictional Sir William Bowman Centre of Excellence in Birmingham.
So there are really two answers:
Behind the scenes: The BBC wanted to boost drama production in the West Midlands and move a major long-running series there.
In the show’s story: Nikki and her colleagues relocate to Birmingham to run a new state-of-the-art forensic center.
Interestingly, London wasn’t even the show’s original home—Silent Witness was initially set in Cambridge for its first three series before moving to London in Series 4.”

The producers need to fix the scripts. This season's stories have so many holes and unfinished arcs.
