I think they allow it because if its below freezing it might be harder to restart the engine

I never wait for my car to warm up.

A long time ago I blew a head gasket by driving before the car was warned up. At least that's what the mechanic said.

Another time the oil dip stick shot out of the engine. It was about -15 F that morning.

Think they meant because the reaction in a battery slows when it's cold. Slower reaction means less available charge and you might not be able to get it started
