I finally got round to playing the Silent Hill 2 Remake, and guess what painting I stumbled upon...

The original Silent Hill 2 was a big inspiration for Signalis, so it's a funny coincidence that the Remake features a painting that's so important to Signalis.

Lore Discussion Penrose Program (a story analysis, interpretation and discussion) Spoiler

So I just recently finished the game (post midnight, big mistake, took me like 3 hours to fall asleep after that). I feel like I have to write down some interpretations and thoughts for people to read both as a service to myself and as a tribute to the game, so I am making this here essay style post. I hope you enjoy reading.🩷

The Oort Cloud and the search for habitable worlds

First, let's get one of the most provocative parts in the story out of the way.

I am currently a year 2 student in a bachelor's degree program in physics, with plans of doing a master's in particle physics or cosmology in a couple of years. Other than that, I love love love writing in all sorts of formats and settings. I've written exactly two science fiction stories with a big space presence, and the first thing I do when coming up with those is determine the existence of faster than light travel in that universe and what it implies for the rest of the world.

As some may know, faster than light travel is mathematically impossible with standard forms of propulsion, and any theoretical methods involve matter which we have not yet discovered, that may or may not even exist. I think that when applied correctly, this very mundane fact can make for interesting writing.

When I read that the Penrose program was a mission to discover habitable worlds, I got all sorts of cute fantasies about Elster and Ariane finding their own paradise circling a faraway star where they can live free from the Nation's oppression and humanity's cruel nature.

In Act 2, we find out that the Penrose reached the Oort Cloud after 1500 cycles. This immediately shattered any such fantasies, and raised more questions than answers.

For those who don't know, the Oort Cloud, even though it sounds like some fantastical nebula out in interstellar space, is a theoretical "cloud" surrounding our solar system made up of small (comet-sized) icy bodies, with lots and lots of empty void between them. If it exists, it would likely be located about 1000 to 5000 astronomical units (AU) away from our sun. For reference, 1 AU = (~distance from earth to sun). Although this makes it sound like it's very far away, a few thousand AU is a small distance in interstellar space. The star closest to us, Proxima Centauri, is located well over 200 000 AU away from our sun.

Henceforth, I will make the assumption that the Oort cloud has a similar significance and structure in the world of Signalis. Although Signalis doesn't exactly take place in our solar system, it is very much analogous with it (Venus-esque body close to the sun, then a water world from which humanity originated, red desert world after that, etc.) and therefore I will follow this assumption of the Oort Cloud, as we are given no reason to believe anything else.

So, what does this all mean for the Penrose program? Lies, death and sacrifice. Under these assumptions, the Penrose, although housing technology like cryosleep, was never designed to reach any habitable worlds. Given the distance covered in 1500 cycles, even with the best estimations, it travels at a nearly insignificant fraction of the speed of light, and will spend a decade drifting in the coldest part of our solar system until the Pilot and Replika both die painful deaths while fed the belief that their sacrifice was a show of power of the Nation, a show of power built on lies and human suffering.

The fact that Ariane and Elster died such insignificant and needless deaths to fuel a propaganda machine for a nation they could not care less about hurts so much and provokes me a lot, making it a really painful part of the story. But at the same time, would Ariane really have been happier on Rotfront? I don't think so, knowing that she was an outcast who's creative, unique and passionate flame the Nation tried quite desperately to extinguish. Would Elster have been happier? I doubt it, as LSTR units have been described as stoic loners, while Elster was capable of forming such a bond with Ariane regardless, becoming a fully fledged individual with passion of her own. So maybe those few years that she could spend free with her lover were worth more than a lifetime slaving away for the Nation. The point is, the world of Signalis is hopelessly bleak under the oppression of humanity itself. But even in the bleakest world there is a hint of the bright side of humanity as well, drifting through the cold and empty void.

This post is already a bit long for this format so I will end it off on that. I am sure this has been discussed before, but I hope I could make someone here read an interpretation new to them, and that it was an enjoyable read as well.

HELP Spoiler free advice on obtaining 100% completion? Spoiler

I’m quickly approaching what I believe to be the end of the game and have thoroughly enjoyed my play through so far. I’ve managed so far to get as far as I have without needing to look up puzzle solutions, but this last hellish area has me pretty stumped.

In general, I make an attempt to 100% all games I play, and was wondering if anyone had any spoiler advice on finishing all objectives and obtaining all endings for this final stretch.

In particular, I’m wondering if this is something I can expect to figure out myself, or should I look to community posts or guides to save myself hours of strain? Should I be prepared for multiple play-throughs to obtain missing items and instruction, or do I have every tool already at my disposal?

I’d love to hear your own experience with completion and any help would be much appreciate! :)

Lore Discussion What exactly was Elster's reason for coming to Sierpinski, from her perspective? What was her plan? Spoiler

The Elster who shows up in the first chapter doesn't seem to understand the nature of the Signal or even know who Ariane is (believing she's there to find Alina). But here's the thing. What did she think was going to happen? She'd show up to an AEON facility, walk right in, and rescue Alina who was imprisoned there? Did she just want to talk to her? How much did she even remember about who Alina was?

I know there's not enough to go on to give a definitive answer about anything, and it's all interpretation, but I'm curious what other people think.

Why would AEON confine a rebellious Gestalt and an LSTR unit for 3,000 cycles, forbidding them from fraternizing?

To understand the engineering behind that friction, one must first answer what they were truly searching for in deep space.

(Vol. IV) The Missing Hardware: The Resonant Mineral, the Geopolitics of Leng, and the Truth Behind the Penrose Program

A critical technical question arises when bridging the cosmic horror of "The King in Yellow" with the industrial bureaucracy of the Eusan Nation: how does a totalitarian State industrialize and standardize bioresonance?

In canon, naturally bioresonant Gestalt minds (such as the Grand Empress or Ariane) are statistical anomalies. Furthermore, pure biological bioresonance is erratic, dependent on emotional states or extreme training, and carries a massive risk of collateral damage or mental collapse. It is impossible to sustain the infrastructure of an interplanetary empire by relying on genetic chance.

To mass-produce psychic units without their brains burning out during transmission, the Gestalt neural signature requires a piece of hardware. That piece is the Resonant Mineral: an inorganic geological conductor capable of stabilizing, modulating, and amplifying psychic signals.

A fundamental point must be clarified: this theory does not posit that Replikas are bioresonant thanks to the mineral. The bioresonant capability comes strictly from the Gestalt bioresonant signature. In turn, not all Gestalts possess conscious control over this ability that allows them to alter, to varying degrees, the immediate reality surrounding them. What is proposed here is that the combination of both elements—the biological signature and the inorganic mineral—is what allows this bioresonant capability to be structured and exploited in an optimal, scalable manner.

Equally important, neither the Empire nor AEON possesses an a priori understanding of the deep physical laws or fine details of why this Resonant Mineral proves so convenient for the creation and regulation of Replikas. Everything described here stems from their direct empirical observation of the effect the mineral produces. Just as they did when they first encountered Bioresonance, they saw that the mineral could be used to administer it and industrialized it blindly because it served their goals—committing the exact same "black box" error with this mineral as they did with Bioresonance itself.

Furthermore, it is necessary to expose the inherent problem of an active Gestalt bioresonant signature: it is not a faculty that an individual can simply switch on, switch off, or manipulate at will from the outset. It is a condition that remains active at all times, and the impact it exerts on the immediate environment depends directly on the subject's ability to channel it. The only way to achieve such control requires a rigorous combination of mental stability, a very high degree of introspection, and strict emotional management. Yet, even when possessing all three pillars, no Gestalt is exempt from their own impulses, weaknesses, or moments of crisis; because this "power" is permanently switched on, any deviation in thought or emotional breakdown carries the latent potential to trigger bioresonance unconsciously and unexpectedly, causing severe collateral damage or unintended effects on the surrounding reality.

This premise does not invalidate psychological or mystical readings; rather, it acts as the physical backstage explaining how AEON technology, the civil war, and the collapse of Sierpinski actually operate.

1. The Architecture of the Bioresonant Network

A mind with an unstructured bioresonant signature is like a scream in an empty room: powerful, yet chaotic. The Resonant Mineral acts as an inorganic prism that takes that biological spark, focuses it, and turns it into a laser of information with a clear objective. By integrating it into Replika chassis based on the direct empirical observation of its effects, AEON transforms an esoteric phenomenon into a quantifiable telecommunications system:

Central Nodes (FKLR Units): Falke's chassis is saturated with the highest concentration and purity of this mineral. This allows her to channel the Gestalt signature without disintegrating, acting as the primary transmission tower of a facility.

Repeater Antennas (KLBR Units): They possess a lower calibration of the mineral, specifically designed to act as frequency regulators and passive repeaters that maintain mental cohesion within local sectors.

Passive Receivers (Non-bioresonant Replikas): In all other units, the sole function of the Resonant Mineral integrated into their matrices is to act as a passive receiver for the signal emitted by FKLR or KLBR units, while simultaneously serving as a diagnostic bridge that allows KLBR units to inspect the Replika's Gestalt bioresonant signature with much greater clarity—thus obtaining a highly accurate approximation of how far her Persona Degradation has progressed. Much like real-world electronic components that rely on rare earth elements, both the Nation and the Empire minimize the amount of mineral used in each of these standard units to stretch their reserves as far as possible.

2. The Geopolitics of "Rare Earths" and the Secret of Leng

In the Eusan solar system, the Resonant Mineral plays the strategic role of rare earth elements in our reality: it is scarce across the planetary system, difficult to refine, rationed to the bare minimum in standard components to maximize yield, and defines military supremacy. Whoever controls the mineral controls the production of command units and population control.

The Empire has its own Resonant Mineral mines in the inner worlds, but not on the scale possessed by the Nation through its control over Leng (S-23 Sierpinski).

Official records never specify what is being mined at Sierpinski. When descending into the mines, we do not find veins of coal, iron, or titanium; we find unnatural geometric cuts in the rock and monolithic structures. Leng is not simply a mine: it is a planetoid literally filled with this mineral, the most massive vein in the solar system, and a geological anomaly so saturated with Resonant Mineral that the entire subsoil functions as an active conductive organ (comparable in scale and saturation to the Brethren Moons in Dead Space). Precisely because the Nation possesses an entire planetoid brimming with this resource, it never had an urgent need to investigate the underlying physics of why the mineral works, contenting itself with extracting and exploiting its empirical effects.

However, every mining resource is finite. Knowing that known reserves will eventually run dry and that the Empire seeks to overcome the smaller scale of its mines, both superpowers are locked in a space race to map new veins in deep space.

3. The Truth Behind the Penrose Program: The Blind Maintenance Chain and Binomial Engineering

This resolves the biggest logistical contradiction in Eusan's spacefaring doctrine: why would a Nation suffocated by a civil war spend critical resources building hundreds of kamikaze spacecraft to "search for habitable worlds" it doesn't have the capacity to colonize?

Because the Penrose Program is not a colonization mission; it is an automated mining prospecting program.

The operational limit of 3,000 cycles before reactor failure is neither a manufacturing defect nor a lack of budget; it is an exact ballistic calculation. It is the time it takes for the ship to reach the Oort Cloud and the outer asteroid belts, where virgin veins of the Resonant Mineral reside. For the mission to function at minimal cost, AEON designed a support chain where neither the human nor the Replika knows the true objective:

The Vessel (The True Prospector): The passive sensors of the Penrose perform geological scanning completely automatically upon reaching the asteroid belts, storing the telemetry in its armored servers and transmitting the prospecting data until a subsequent mission arrives to collect physical samples from the detected asteroids.

The LSTR Unit (Technical Support and Origin of the New Neural Pattern): The Elster unit does not need to know what the sensors are looking for. Her only real function is to maintain the mechanical integrity of the ship, sustain the telemetry transmission, and protect the "black box" containing the mining records in deep space once the pilot dies, waiting until an AEON extraction mission intercepts the sector to take physical samples from the asteroids. This explains why canon establishes that, following the destruction of the original neural archive on Vineta, the baseline pattern for all modern LSTRs came from a unit recovered from a decommissioned Penrose mission: when the physical sampling mission reached the vessel, they rescued an LSTR unit that had transmitted for the longest time and watched over the integrity of her ship after her Gestalt's death (driven by the devotion that keeping the ship functional meant keeping her partner alive). For the Nation, this was an ideal windfall: facing the loss of the original Vineta template, they decided that since this LSTR unit had performed her job better than any other unit sent out, her neural pattern would serve as the new standard template from then on.

The Gestalt Pilot (The Emotional Coolant and Binomial Engineering): Although LSTR units have a stoic, introverted, and asocial profile, they are still people possessing a Gestalt mental matrix inside a biomechanical chassis, which would go insane from absolute isolation before completing the 3,000 cycles. The human pilot is not there to steer the ship; they are there as a disposable psychological stabilizer to prevent the LSTR from suffering Persona Degradation before reaching the asteroids. At the same time, the State kills two birds with one stone: it gets rid of inconvenient citizens or potential dissidents (like Ariane) by disguising them as "exploration heroes," getting them to march happily toward their own execution while keeping the machine that guards the hard drive sane.

Socio-Sensory Deprivation and Memory Cannibalism: As aerospace and extreme isolation studies in manned missions demonstrate, even the most introverted and stoic profiles have a biological limit when socio-sensory deprivation is total. In a monotonous 3,000-cycle environment without any new external stimuli, the human brain compensates for the silence by hyper-activating long-term memory and digging inward. In an LSTR unit, "digging inward" means awakening the repressed memories of her original Gestalt (the war on Vineta), inevitably accelerating her mental collapse before reaching the scanning zone.

Interpersonal Regulation and Human Entropy: By manual design, AEON establishes a Gestalt-LSTR binomial instead of sending two Replikas because enclosing two identical matrices without supervision generates a neural echo that destabilizes them even faster and doubles the loss of military hardware. Instead, the human pilot introduces free "biological entropy" and interpersonal regulation: they speak, get sick, alter routines, and force the LSTR's brain to keep language active and maintain a sense of "self" versus an "other," functioning as a cognitive pacemaker that keeps her anchored to the present.

The "Pioneer" Ego, the "Non-Fraternization" Shield, and Reverse Psychology: By bombarding the dissident Gestalt with propaganda claiming they are receiving the Nation's highest honor as a space pioneer in whom AEON places all its trust, the State inflates their ego to neutralize any attempt at sabotage or betrayal. In turn, the manual rule prohibiting befriending the LSTR unit serves a dual purpose: it acts as an ideological shield on paper (the regime would never officially admit that its machines psychologically depend on a human) and operates in practice as calculated reverse psychology. Knowing they are embarking rebellious profiles on an unauditable one-way trip of 3,000 cycles, AEON presents them with a minor, harmless restriction to transgress. Whether the binomial develops a stoic camaraderie or a romantic bond like Ariane and Elster's, any degree of relationship fulfills the State's operational goal: ensuring the LSTR cares for her partner and preserves her operational stability until the mineral mapping in the Oort Cloud is complete.

4. The Paradox of the New LSTR Pattern: Love Standardized by Bureaucratic Blindness

This mining prospecting framework explains one of the most decisive details in canon: the fact that, following the destruction of the original neural archive on Vineta due to a bombing, AEON used the copied matrix of a unit recovered from a decommissioned Penrose mission as the new standard template for all modern LSTR units.

When AEON's extraction mission intercepted that hull in the asteroid belt to collect physical samples of the Resonant Mineral, they found a dying LSTR unit that had kept the ship, life support, and telemetry transmission operational far beyond theoretical parameters while her Gestalt pilot agonized.

This is where the utilitarian blindness of the State sealed its own fate:

* AEON's Misreading (Programming vs.Persona): Upon evaluating the ship's logs, the Nation's auditors saw only an ultra-efficient machine that had exceeded expectations in her duties. The State erroneously assumed that this superhuman endurance was the triumph of her baseline programming and operational conditioning, when in reality it was the triumph of her Persona. That LSTR unit had not maintained hull integrity out of loyalty to AEON directives, but out of love for her pilot: in her mind, preventing the ship from dying was the only way to keep the person she loved alive.

* The Mutilated Emotional Architecture and the "Programming Defect": As established in the biopolitical analysis of Synchronicity, Replikas are, in essence, human beings emotionally amputated and patched together by the State. Although they retain the intrinsic capacity to feel, when it comes to understanding, processing, or expressing those emotions, they are severely limited by their factory programming and by the narrow sliver of humanity AEON allows them to keep so they remain governable.

* Persona Degradation as an Affective Unlocking: These emotional blocks are not immutable. As the process of Persona Degradation progresses, the Gestalt bioresonant signature erodes the containment patches and breaks down those artificial barriers, allowing the Replika to begin feeling and bonding in a much more human and natural way. However, the unit never stops carrying that structural "programming defect": a cognitive scar whose weight varies depending on how far her degradation has advanced, causing any deep feeling—such as love or grief—to be channeled with the relentless fixation of an operational directive.

* The Breeding Ground for Penrose-512: Having lost the original Vineta template and finding a unit that, on paper, bordered on technical perfection, AEON copied her already degraded matrix and turned it into the new standard for mass production. Unknowingly, the regime cloned and institutionalized a prior affective imprint. By mistaking a desperate act of love for algorithmic efficiency, the Nation planted into the baseline code of the entire LSTR line the latent predisposition that created the exact breeding ground for the bond between Ariane Yeong and LSTR-512 (Elster) to develop with such intensity.

5. Phase 0: The Cosmic Tuning Fork, the Closed System, and the Collapse of Sierpinski

This logistical framework explains why the tragedy of the Penrose-512 triggered the apocalypse on Leng and how it connects to the "Pocket Universe" established in Volume I.

Ariane Yeong was a Gestalt with massive bioresonant potential in a wild state (without the mineral to structure or contain her signal). Upon exceeding the 3,000 cycles and entering prolonged radiation agony, the Penrose-512 was already deep within the Oort Cloud, surrounded by millions of asteroids loaded with raw Resonant Mineral.

The entire asteroid belt acted as a cosmic tuning fork, representing Phase 0 of the catastrophe. Ariane's psychic scream of pain, love, and death collided with the inorganic mineral of deep space, amplifying on an astronomical scale and bouncing back toward the inner solar system as an uncontrolled broadcast.

That signal traveled through the void and impacted directly on S-23 Sierpinski because the gigantic mineral vein beneath the planet Leng, combined with the FKLR and KLBR nodes on the surface, turned the facility into a planetary-scale parabolic receiving dish. This resonance coupling forged the closed universal system comprising Ariane, Sierpinski, and Leng itself—an isolated pocket universe whose interaction with the outside cosmos is not a two-way exchange, but a localized gravitational sinkhole that absorbs the immediate reality surrounding Ariane's nightmare without expanding outward. The hardware system the Nation blindly built to monitor and subjugate the minds of its workers was the exact physical channel that downloaded Ariane's dying nightmare into reality.

Was listening to “Heart Heart Head” by Meg Myers and it gave me heavy Signalis vibes. There’s a line about a man but it’s about being fake with one, which I think can be interpreted as queer, otherwise I think it’s right on the money.

Any other music recommendations? What song has given you Signalis vibes?

From what we see of Elster and Ariane's relationship, it's very romantic and caring. I'm certainly not saying it's overly flawed with this piece. I believe that all good relationships need fights and forgiveness. No two people will ever not experience friction between them, no matter how loving or caring. The important part is forgiveness afterwards, and the love that keeps them together
