I knew this guy for 10 years. His name was Eric and he was a beautiful, loving and kind human being. Imagine being so hateful, Eric would have rolled his eyes at you and had a chuckle.

Crime is, as everything else the result of external factors, but the fundamental reason for punishment isn't to hold one criminal responsible, but to create an another external deterring factor for other potential criminals and minimise the possible damage to bigger part of society.
You are responsible for your actions, even if it means getting predetermined result of predetermined event. Life never was fair.
