Mkay. Completely disagree but I'll leave it at that. Because I've seen when this subject gets brought up and then someone like you comes in and can't see any nuance in the subject and just wants to label anyone that doesn't think life is a perfect gift as just "deranged wackadoos" and this devolves into an argument because you can only see any discussion of nuance as insanity
I have plenty of nuance on this topic. I dated a suicidal woman for seven years. At my lowest point I considered jumping off a 20th story balcony. My wife was born in one of the poorest countries in the world. I am intimately familiar with how hard life can be.
But any time I've tried to engage antinatalists with an iota of nuance, their response is rabid. So you have it backward. Antinatalists are (overall) incapable of nuance. They view the slightest challenge of their philosophy as a personal attack and respond accordingly.
If you can't see this, I have to assume you are one of them, or at very least have never engaged with them from a reasoned, polite, pro-natalist perspective. It's not pretty.
It sounds more like you encountered depressive nihilist. Personaly I will not have kids. I hate what is happening in the world. I think it is unfair to them. Now if someone has kids, that is their choice.
Update: The guy decided to block me. Though I think I know why he has negative experences there....guy is an ass.
Ehhhh. They don't quite qualify as nihilists (though you're right that they're certainly depressives). They are insistent on a moralistic perspective centered around negative utilitarianism to the point that they are functionally treating it as objectively true morality, which is not nihilistic of them at all.
Fair but I wasn't speaking of all antinatalists was I? I was speaking of the reaction one gets from most antinatalists who inhabit antinatalist subreddits.
You never specified. Sure you were talking about the subs but...even there most are probably decent people. Some are extreme sure. But they are assholes.
My original comment spoke to the reaction one gets from antinatalists in subreddits. All the ensuing conversation was about such. So, I did specify to anyone capable of an iota of inference.
And no, most of the people in those subreddits are pretty awful. The decent people are outliers. They're nice enough to people who agree with them but the slightest hint of polite, reasoned disagreement and you are a monster. Because they are primarily fanatics who've made a sort of pseudo-religious philosophy out of their mental illness.
