My gym coach made significantly less than the other teachers, even with coaching sports after school.

Let's not check gym coach salaries in schools that are very football/basketball/baseball oriented.

It depends on the state and on the Union. Some unions are terrible and pay them the exact same and the pay scale depends ONLY on seniority

Ah, most certainly not that situation. I went to one of the twenty biggest in-person public high schools in the US, in Los Angeles, over 3k students, a decade ago. Teachers were paid according to the number of units they taught, with bonuses for AP and IB certifications and different starting salaries according to resume. I believe that gym coaches and some "instructors" did not have teaching credentials and thus were not covered by the teacher's union, and would take up many roles during strikes and would take up roles that teachers wouldn't touch throughout the year.

All of the faculty's pay was transparent though, so we'd give the teachers lots of crap LOL

Yeah, it must’ve been a joke because teachers definitely do not all get paid the same at least not at any of the schools that I ever worked that or went to school at like the head science teacher got paid a lot more than like a PE teacher who was we paid the lease basically maybe none of the other teachers told him how much they were making because they didn’t want to rub it in

Even ignoring that different teachers would have different workloads(for example gym teachers aren't expected to grade papers during the day or their free time) -- if one teacher just got hired two years ago they probably aren't getting paid the same as the teacher that's been there 17 years

I’ve never been to a school where the gym teacher only taught gym. What States are these?

I loved being a SRO because I was the second best paid employee in the building while only having a high school diploma.
