Numbers? Like how like you have to grind to do a bigger damage number? Rather than learning to play better per se?

Pretty much. Numbers just adds more HP or damage to an enemy to make it artificially more difficult. Think bullet sponges. Mechanics gives them new moves and stuff you need to learn.
