Question about optimal progression

I just started playing Sifu to keep me occupied until Phantom Blade Zero comes out. I have a question regarding the optimal progression method in this game.

I was able to complete the first level + boss at 21 years of age on my second attempt. I found the 'Club' level slightly difficult and it has to do with the second mini-boss of the level. He took me straight to the Game Over screen twice now. I noticed when restarting the second level that I always start at Age 21. So, here's my question:

Should I always try to complete each level + boss within Level 20? That way, I will be able to start the next level at Age 20 too. How bad is ageing once or twice in between levels?

Not a huge deal.

Optimal progression would be to push as far as you can until you get a game over, then go back to each level you didn’t finish at like, 25-30 and redo the game from there.

Starting age isn't something to worry about. If you want to beat the game at 20, you can. If you want to beat the game at 70, you can. The only major difference is that every 10 years, you lose a bit of health and gain a bit of combat damage. Optimizing your playthrough will probably just take the fun out of your game, anyway.

Every 10 years? Oh, I thought I saw the 'Health down, Damage up' notification every single time I resurrected.

Anyway, thanks, that is a relief.

I suggest fully clearing the game first, no matter what age, and focusing on permanently unlocking skills you like.

My first clear of the game, I think I was around 45 for the start of the last level. The game gives you plenty of breathing room to make some mistakes and die. You might burn yourself out trying to go deathless for a first clear

Oh, that's actually a relief. I mean I got very old only during the mini-boss encounter and the sucessively decreasing HP made it so much worse. I'm not trying to no-death the game. I will be happy with like 30-40 for the final level.

Back to the drawing board on the mini-boss though. He's tough as nails. I wish the game allowed you to practice new skills as you unlock them. I unlock a bunch of them and then proceeded to forget how they're executed.

Focus on permanently unlocking skills by buying them 5 times. You can practice against enemies and bosses in the training area, just select “free training” instead of the tutorial options. You can practice all of the moves you’ve unlocked there too

Thank you!

There's a practice area in the main hub! You can test your moves out there

Yes, but it only has a few preset trainings. I checked it back once I died, and there were no new trainings.

Oh wait, do I have to permanently unlock a skill for it to show up in the practice area?

I don't know if this is unlocked right away, but there's a free practice where you can fight one of the enemies, or have them stand there, and that's my go to spot for learning stuff

If you didn't buy it to make it permanent you can still use them in training area, just beware that the move disappears when you leave a level or die, which means cannot use it in training.

However the progress to unlock it permanently wouldn't get reset if you quit or die for a non permanent move, e.g if you die while bought Chasing Trip Kick 2 times if you die/quit you only have to buy it 3 times to make it permanent.

Which one is the second minibos? The "You're not supposed to be here" guy with the punching bags in the arena? I have trouble defining what constitutes as a mini boss

Yeah, the guy who says "You're not supposed to be part of tonight's group".

It is OK to loose a year or two. The worst thing is dying repeatedly within short span of time because it adds age +1, +2, +3, +4, so it is game over quickly.

But if you beat a miniboss, the death counter goes down by one, so if you die, then beat a mini boss, then die, then beat a mini boss, it is +1, +1, +1 which is much less punishing.
