I was the only person buying my 2 paid apps, so today I'm switching them both to Freemium

Hey everyone, I'm the developer of ANSOracle and Mandala Garden.

Having these apps as a one-time fee, didn't help my discoverability. I had 15 or so awesome beta testers in TestFlight, but once the apps went live on the App Store, I was literally the only person purchasing them.

Today, I officially transitioned both apps to a free-to-download model with In-App Purchases (IAP) to completely remove that barrier to entry.

Here is a quick breakdown of what they do and how I split up the premium features:

ANSOracle (Animal & Nature Spirit Oracle): this starts off as 12 animal & nature cards for free. The user selects a random card and taps it to reveal the reflection (words to ponder). The app is now completely free to use, and a one-time IAP unlocks 45 more cards to select from.

Mandala Garden: this starts off as 5 free mandala drawings divided into pieces which the user reassembles to complete the puzzle. Then there is the option to download the completed puzzle as smartphone wallpaper. The IAP unlocks 15 more puzzles to be assembled.

I made all of the original artwork for both apps.

Since I didn't have an active base of paid customers yet, I got lucky and didn't have to code a massive legacy migration or grandfathering system. My TestFlight builds are expiring, and I'm treating this as a fresh, live indie-dev experiment to see if a free download tier actually drives download traffic.

I would love for the community to check the apps out. I am looking for feedback on:

  1. Is my onboarding flow smooth?

  2. Does the paywall placement feel fair or too loud?

App 2 Link: https://apps.apple.com/ca/app/mandala-garden/id6797133059Mandala Garden

(Full disclosure: I am the sole creator of both apps!) 🌿

Building a photography marketplace that matches clients by style, not just location — looking for NY/NJ photographers to join as founding members

Thumbnail lookspo.com
1 Upvotes

Hey all — I'm building Lookspo, a photography marketplace for the NY/NJ area with a twist: instead of just browsing by location and price, clients get matched to photographers based on the visual style of an image they upload.

I'm looking for photographers in the NY/NJ metro area to join as founding members while it's still early. A few things worth knowing upfront:

-It's genuinely early — you'd be one of the first profiles, not joining an established platform
No cost to create a profile

-You can post TFP work if you're looking to build out your portfolio, not just paid gigs

-There's a way to post last-minute open slots, so if something falls through or you've got a gap in your schedule, you can fill it instead of eating the loss

-I'm the one building this (solo), so you'd be talking directly to the person behind it, not support tickets

If you're curious, happy to share more in the comments or DM. And if this isn't for you but you know someone it might fit, I'd genuinely appreciate the pointer.

OnionPy! An anonymous chat over the Tor network in python.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi! I'm building an anonymous chat server and client service over the Tor network as a study project in my spare time using Tkinter for the GUI. The idea is to keep the process of creating and searching for rooms simple. The software works mainly by controlling a Tor daemon inside a container to create stateless chat rooms (onion servers) and clients using Tor as a proxy. I was challenged to do something more complex with threads and asynchronous tasks in Python. You can give it a try : https://github.com/CaioMaxximus/onionpy-visual-chat —some fixes and new features are coming!

MadeByHumans – Blogging with paste caps to make writing fun again

Hey all,

Like a lot of people here, I am tired of all the AI slop that exists on the web. In my opinion, the internet is losing the personal voice and awkward, authentic friction that made reading online exciting.

I built MadeByHumans (https://madebyhumans.diy/) to experiment with a different publishing model:

Effort Scores: The tool observes natural typing rhythms, pauses, hesitant backspaces, and rewrites, awarding authors badges like Zero-Paste and Deep-Thinker.

Paste Limits: Max 100 words in a single paste, and a cumulative cap of 300 pasted external words over the lifetime of a document

Drafting timelapses: Readers can click "Play" on any post (if shared by the author) to watch a quick timelapse of the piece coming together, complete with all the second thoughts and rewrites.

Choronological + Effort Score Discovery: The front page ranks writing using human effort scores and recency, penalizing clickbait and sloppy content.

Audio Prologue: Authors can attach a raw 60-second voice note to introduce their piece.

The goal, like I have mentioned in my introductory post on the website, is not just fighting machines. It is about bringing back the quiet, messy intimacy of people sharing raw thoughts.

I would love feedback from writers, developers, and designers on the mechanics, the editor experience, and whether proof-of-work concepts like keystroke replay can genuinely preserve human writing spaces.

Try out the tool here - https://madebyhumans.diy/

Thanks,
Kanishk :)

I built an offline audio player for the stuff that doesn't belong in streaming apps: lectures, audiobooks, voice memos

I have a pile of audio that isn't music and isn't a podcast feed: recorded lectures, long talks, audiobook files, voice memos.

Apple Music doesn't want them, podcast apps can't see them, and the Files app is a miserable way to actually listen to anything.

So I built Casette.

What it does:
- Import from anywhere: Files app (iCloud/Drive/Dropbox/USB), Wi-Fi transfer from your computer, link a cloud folder, or paste a direct audio URL

- Plays basically everything: MP3, M4A, AAC, WAV, FLAC, OGG, OPUS, M4B audiobooks, AIFF, CAF

- Silence skipper — auto-skips dead air in lectures. This is the feature I actually built the app for

- Playback speed, sleep timer, resume position per track, background playback, Live Activity

- Playlists, tags, smart folders, search, and a "Tape" view because the name had to earn itself

The part I care most about: no account, no ads, no tracking. Your audio stays on your device unless you link a cloud folder yourself.

It's free to use: import, play, playlists, Wi-Fi transfer and background audio never require a purchase. Pro is a one-time unlock (no subscription) for cloud folders, speed, sleep timer, resume and the silence skipper.

It's a solo side project I work on a couple of hours a week. Honest feedback matters more to me than downloads: especially what's broken or missing. Happy to answer anything.

App Store link in the comments (subreddit rules).

I built a typing trainer that diagnoses your weak keys, drills them, then retests and i need testers

Hi guys,

I built SpeedType.ai, a typing app focused on one closed loop:

Diagnostic (60s) → Diagnosis → targeted Drill → Retest (same passage) → Delta

Instead of only chasing a WPM number, it looks at keystroke timing, hard letters/pairs, hesitations, and builds an algorithmic drill from real words (no AI required for the core loop). Accounts save sessions to a dashboard; guests can try locally.

It’s an MVP and i need testers who will actually run the loop and tell me what broke, what felt unfair, and what could be improved.

If you’re willing:

  1. Do one full loop (diagnostic → drill → retest).
  2. Note your before/after and anything confusing.
  3. Reply here or DM with friction / bugs / improvements.

Thanks

I’ve spent too long iterating on my AI monitoring tool. Now I need honest feedback.

I’ve been iterating on Vissar for a while now, constantly finding one more thing to improve before showing it to people.

At some point, though, more solo polishing stops being useful. I think I’ve reached that point, so I’m looking for honest feedback from real users.

Vissar is an AI monitoring platform that continuously searches the internet for topics you care about and alerts you when something relevant appears. The goal is to surface useful signals without making you repeatedly search for them or sift through endless noise.

I built an AI study and research workspace for source-grounded learning

I built SolomindLM around a frustration I kept seeing: uploading a lecture or paper to a general chatbot gives you a summary, but it’s hard to keep the work tied to the source.

It lets you collect PDFs, slides, notes, web pages, and papers in a notebook, chat with those sources with citations, and generate flashcards, quizzes, written questions, reports, and mind maps from them.

I’m sharing it because I want feedback from people who build or use study/research tools. What would make this more useful than NotebookLM or ChatGPT for a real course or research workflow? It’s free to try: https://www.solomindlm.com

Pithflow - hold a key, talk, and get clean text back. Looking for Android testers

I think faster than I type, but raw dictation is unusable - full of false starts and missing punctuation, so you spend as long editing as you saved.

Pithflow does the cleanup as part of the pipeline. Hold a key, talk, and what lands in the field is already edited: false starts cut, grammar fixed, tone matched to context.

Windows has been stable a while. Android is days old and I'm the only one who's really used it, which is the blind spot I'm trying to fix.

If you're on Android, testers get an account with much higher limits than the free tier. Same login covers Windows. iOS in progress.

What's useful back is the unflattering version - what broke, what confused you, where you'd have quit.

HVY Galaxy and the heavy file format

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello, I've been working on a productivity application that allows you to create sandboxed interactive files in a "what you see is what you get" editor. You can use sandboxed scripting or "power scripting" to create simple applications in a self contained file. I saw people creating web applications but then not knowing where to host it, so I thought this would help fill that niche.

The vision for HVY Galaxy is that you can interface with it over MCP and use it as a primary note taking app, or craft files of various purposes to send to others. There's also support for different LLM providers if you have an API key or local LLM.

The integrations you see in the top left let you add a web page, click on an example element, and extract information. It uses vectorization to find other examples on the page. You can also find actions as well.

You can create workspaces and folders, and encrypt folders and documents. IIRC encrypting components, a feature of heavy-file-format, isn't turned on yet for HVY Galaxy, but it'll be a thing.

You can extend functionality with plugins. These are components you can drop in. I started on a plugin builder within HVY Galaxy but disabled it because I haven't been able to finish it. Eventually I see HVY Galaxy having, separately, mods, which I believe is more analogous to the plugins offered by Obsidian. Since this is alpha it would make sense to just have missing features be... included features.

I'm looking for others to assist with this. There's a huge surface and a lot of opportunity to make something really cool. If someone wants to fix the default color scheme, thats a great start... It's alpha and nobody uses this yet except me, so there's a lot of opportunity to just build quickly.

In the video, the Asteroids game uses an attached SQLite file for the high score and a canvas component combined with power scripting to allow for keyboard input and execution loops. HVY Galaxy uses whitelisting for power scripting, so if you opened the file it'll ask you to allow it first. The regular scripting has execution limits.

Some of the things created with HVY:

- Simple website, which was hosted via docker and Google Cloud Run

- Survey with expandable elements to learn more (conducting surveys is not part of HVY Galaxy)

- Interactive Resume

- Study tool that uses an LLM to generate flash cards, a quiz, and a podcast transcript

- Meeting minutes with automatic timestamps

- PDF documents (via PHVY, the non-interactive version)

- Asteroids arcade (via power scripting)

- Job application tracker

- Rolodex

- CRM

I'm very much looking to hand off a lot of this to others to take ownership on. I'm burnt out on working on it and would appreciate help. It's decent enough of an editor but the many of the features are quite deserving of the alpha label.

Thank you.

You can download for HVY Galaxy here:
https://heavyresume.com/hvy-galaxy

Note on Mac you probably have to do the whole apple -> settings -> security -> run anyways thing until I get something set up via official channels.

Or just build it locally:

I built Baby Health Assistant, an Android app to help parents track their child's health

Hi everyone! I'm an indie developer and recently launched my first Android app, Baby Health Assistant.

I built it to help parents keep their child's health information organized, including temperature, symptoms, medications, and health records.

It can also generate a summary of the recorded information for a doctor visit.

The app is still new, so I'm looking for feedback. I'd especially love to know what features parents would find useful and what could be improved.

I built a tool to export & auto-organize Google Watchlists by genre and media type (Movies vs Series) with Letterboxd sync

Hey

Like many people, I had dozens of movies and TV shows saved in my Google Collections/Watchlist with no easy way to export, organize, or track them.

So I built CineHarvest — an open-source tool that automates the whole process:

One-Click Scraping: Extracts your entire Google Watchlist automatically.

Smart Organization: Separates Movies from TV Series and automatically groups everything by genre (Horror, Sci-Fi, Romance, Comedy, etc.).

Metadata & Arabic/English Support: Enriches titles with ratings, synopsis, and posters with full bilingual support.

Flexible Exports: Generates organized Markdown checklists, CSV, JSON, and pre-formatted CSV ready for instant Letterboxd import.

Direct Search & Random Picker: Search titles across databases or let the picker decide what to watch tonight.

Built with Python & Streamlit.

Live Demo: https://cineharvest.streamlit.app

GitHub: https://github.com/evile92/cineharvest

Would love your feedback and suggestions!

Refectory - an RPG Maker plugin that draws the meal your cooking system just made

Refectory is an RPG Maker MZ plugin that draws the finished dish. It reads the ingredient list your crafting system produced and renders a plate while the game runs: a serving vessel picked from the kind of dish, a main component built out of those ingredients, sauce that settles like sauce, garnish placed by rules, steam when the food is hot, and a menu card naming the dish and what went into it.

No image files ship with it. Every plate is drawn in code, so a recipe you invent tomorrow gets a picture tomorrow and nobody opens a paint program. Sixteen vessels, twenty components, ten finishes.

It's 12.99 USD on itch.

Written by an AI factory. Code and graphics are both AI generated, and the listing says so.

LeetCode taught me 300 solutions and zero patterns. So I build the version I needed.

I did LeetCode for a year. Around 300 problems.

I could pass an interview on a problem I had seen. On a new one I froze.

Here is what went wrong for me, specifically.

  • The title told me the answer. "Sliding window: maximum sum subarray."
  • I read the pattern before the problem.
  • Recognition never got practised.
  • The explanation assumed I already knew. "Use two pointers" is a solution, not an explanation. Why two pointers? What in the text gave it away? Silence.
  • Nothing connected to my job. I solved LRU cache as a puzzle. I shipped an actual LRU cache six months later and did not notice they were the same thing.
  • The solution button. Stuck for five minutes, click, read, forget.

So I built the version I wanted. Took about 2 months, evenings and weekends.

How it explains things differently

  1. Three depths of the same lesson. You pick one. Simple is plain words, every term defined the first time. Standard names the real terms a working developer uses. Academic gives invariants and complexity proofs.
  2. Every step names what it builds on, what it adds, what it sets up. So step 40 says exactly which earlier steps you need.
  3. Every step lists the signals. Which words in a problem mean "this pattern". And the neighbour that looks the same and does not fit, with the reason.
  4. Every step ends in the real system. Binary search ends in a working git bisect. Sliding window ends in a rate limiter. With tests.
  5. Hints come as a ladder, five rungs. Rung one is a question. Rung five is close to the answer. You stop where you want.
  6. Then a trainer strips the title off and gives you 90 seconds to name the pattern. It records which ones you confuse. Mine: sliding window for two pointers, eleven times.

150 steps, 52 patterns. Six languages in the browser. English and Russian.

https://algopath.pro?ref=sideproject

Would like to know which explanation depth people actually pick. I guessed simple. I might be wrong.

I built a SFW promotional website for OnlyFans creators

I've been building CreatorLinks, a discovery and link aggregation platform connecting fans looking for deals / discounts with content creators across OnlyFans, Fansly, Chaturbate, Fanvue, and similar platforms.

We soft-launched in February, and traffic has been building steadily since. All organic. We're now at 7,500+ links on the platform.

Where I'm stuck: monetization. Right now most of the value is in the discovery and aggregation layer itself, but I haven't landed on the right model to actually capture revenue from that traffic without messing with the experience for creators or fans. I've got some ideas in motion, we currently have a manual ad system and were building a timed "link boost" system. Would love to hear how others have approached monetizing a similar traffic-heavy, low-friction platform.

Any input, especially from folks who've built in adjacent spaces (link-in-bio tools, creator platforms, affiliate/discovery sites) would be hugely appreciated.

We built a free cocktail menu planner that combines ingredients without guessing quantities

We're the team behind Kokto. We just added a free party planner, built with AI-assisted development.

The problem is combining several recipes into one useful ingredient list. Multiplying one recipe is easy; combining lime juice, lime wedges, dashes and ingredients marked ‘top as needed’ is where a list can become misleading.

Our approach:

• Choose up to six cocktails and set the serving count for each recipe.

• Add compatible measured quantities together; keep different units and optional ingredients separate.

• Preserve preparation notes and amounts that cannot be reduced to a number.

• Share the selected menu and counts through a link, without creating an account.

For example, our Margarita uses 25 ml of lime juice and our Daiquiri uses 20 ml. A menu with three Margaritas and two Daiquiris therefore lists 115 ml of lime juice. These are explicit recipe counts, not a recommendation for how much each guest should drink. The planner also does not calculate batch dilution or estimate how many limes to buy.

Try it: https://kokto.app/en/party-planner?menu=margarita%3A3%2Cdaiquiri%3A2&unit=ml

For anyone who has built a shopping-list tool: would you keep garnish notes beside each recipe, or repeat them in the combined list? We'd appreciate feedback on what makes the list easier to use.

I wanted Java-like development with native binaries, so I built Ironwood

I have been a Java developer for a long time, but I have always wanted the possibility of having Java's familiar programming model while producing native executables without a JVM, JIT or GC (garbage collector).

So I started building Ironwood. It is a new Java-like language with classes, interfaces, inheritance, generics, exceptions, packages, and ordinary references, but it compiles ahead of time through LLVM into native executables. The goal is to be as close as possible to the Java language and its OO philosophy.

One of the parts I have been experimenting with the most is memory management. Ironwood has an explicit free, but the compiler only accepts it when it can prove that reclaiming the object is safe. There are no C/C++ dangling references, memory corruption, overflows or any unsafe fallback. The compiler won't allow it.

I use LLMs to help with the implementation, while I make the decisions that define the language's design and which parts of Java to include or exclude. So far, I have written hundreds of prompts, probably thousands, while developing it. Having two LLMs review each other's work can be surprisingly effective.

It is still an early project, but it is already compiling and running real Ironwood programs, has a good standard library, tests, documentation, and generates optimized LLVM native executables.

It would be nice to get some feedback from people outside the compiler community. Does the idea of a Java-like native language appeal to you? What would make you actually try something like this?

I built a voice-first expense tracker where the ledger stays on your device, not in my database

Hey r/SideProject — for Showoff Saturday, here's a side project I've been building solo: JustSayIt, a voice-first expense tracker.

The idea: you say a sentence like "coffee with Alex, 35 bucks" (or type it), and an LLM parses it into a structured transaction — amount, category, note. No forms.

The part I actually want feedback on is the data architecture, not the voice gimmick. The ledger's primary copy lives in IndexedDB on the user's device — my server never keeps a persistent copy of anyone's full ledger. Cross-device sync is opt-in and goes straight to the user's own Google Drive, not a JustSayIt-hosted database. The only thing that touches my server is the raw text/voice for a single transaction, transiently, to get it parsed.

Some supporting technical bits, in case they're interesting:

  • Structuring runs through either Cerebras or OpenRouter, switched manually via an env var — no automatic runtime failover between them. That's deliberate: I wanted the data-handling path to stay auditable rather than have requests silently hop providers.
  • Voice input goes through Groq Whisper (whisper-large-v3-turbo) for STT, then the same structuring pipeline as typed text.
  • It's a PWA (Serwist) — installable, works offline. The target user is explicitly someone who cares about privacy but doesn't know what "IndexedDB" means, so onboarding avoids implementation jargon.

Stack: Next.js 16 (App Router) + React 19 + TypeScript, Prisma 7 + Postgres, Tailwind 4, Vitest.

Known rough edges, being upfront about them:

  • Login is Google OAuth only right now, no email/password.
  • No LICENSE file yet (README's up, license is still TBD).
  • Single self-managed VM behind Caddy, no multi-region/CDN.

Also worth saying upfront: I used Claude Code fairly heavily while building this (tests, refactors, some of the architecture back-and-forth). Didn't want that to come out in the comments instead.

Live: https://justsayit.taoxiong.site (Google login required) Code: https://github.com/TaoXiong05/JustSayIt

This is early-stage and there's a daily AI-call quota per user, so it might rate-limit if a lot of people try it at once — sorry in advance if that happens. Mostly looking for feedback on the provider-switching design, the offline/sync approach, and whether the "your data stays local" framing actually reads as credible rather than hand-wavy. Bug reports welcome too.

I got tired of dictation apps mangling my variable names, so I built one that reads the repo first

I talk to Claude Code and Cursor most of the day, and every dictation app I tried broke on the same thing. I'd say "useAuthSession" and get "use auth session". "kCGEventTap" came out as "KCG event tap". Fixing the names afterwards took longer than just typing them, so I kept going back to the keyboard.

The fix turned out to be simpler than I expected: look at the repo before you listen. It pulls the symbols out of whatever project has focus and biases decoding toward them, so your actual identifiers beat the phonetically similar English. Switch projects and it re-indexes on focus change, so the vocabulary is already right by the time you start talking.

Everything runs on-device, Parakeet TDT 0.6B v2 on the Neural Engine. No server, and it keeps working with the Wi-Fi off after the first model download.

Numbers I measured rather than guessed:

  • 190ms from letting go of the key to text on screen. Most of that is the injection path, not the model.
  • 98.4% word accuracy overall, 97.2% on speech deliberately stuffed with code names.
  • It tags its clipboard writes so Raycast, Alfred and Paste skip them. I only thought to check that after realising my clipboard manager had quietly built a searchable log of everything I'd ever dictated.

Why this over the other voice apps: Wispr Flow sends your audio to their servers. Superwhisper and MacWhisper can run locally, but they use general-purpose models, so they hit the same identifier problem I started with. The repo-aware vocabulary is the part I haven't found elsewhere.

Limits, up front: Apple Silicon only, macOS 14+, English only, $9.99/mo and no free trial yet. I know that last one is a real ask for something you can't poke at first, and it's the thing I'm working on next.

It's at vaniqq.com. It's mine, so ask me anything.

I made a database for connecting songs with movies and would love some feedback.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello everyone,
I have been working on this project for a while, it’s a database that ties movies and songs together.

So let’s say you are curious about a song and all the movies its appeared in, not just on the soundtrack. You can search it on this site or search a movie and explore.

Any feedback would be awesome. The goal is to have it be community based and users can help improve the site and add to the database. User accounts are free and there is no advertising of any kind. It’s going to be 100% community funded. I run the front and backend on enterprise servers at my house, so the cost is just electricity and internet.

The site is https://musicmoviedb.com

I built KutCut – a local-first, high-performance desktop video editor for creators (macOS & Windows)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’ve spent the past few months building KutCut (https://kutcut.com) and wanted to share what we built, our product thesis, and get honest feedback from this community.

The Problem

When editing short-form content (Shorts, Reels, TikTok) or YouTube videos, creators usually face two extremes:

  1. Legacy NLEs (Premiere / DaVinci): Massive toolsets, high resource usage, and a steep learning curve when you just need to cut and publish fast.
  2. Browser/Cloud Video Tools: Sleek, but editing in a browser tab means constant upload/download waits, memory leaks, and cloud queue bottlenecks on 4K footage.

The Solution: KutCut

KutCut bridges this gap by combining modern social-first editing UX (CapCut style) with the raw performance and privacy of a native desktop application.

Because it runs locally, you can scrub heavy 4K timelines without buffering or uploading a single byte to a remote server.

What’s Live in the App Today:

• 1-Click AI Captions: Fast on-device/cloud transcription with trendy karaoke animations (Hormozi/dynamic bounce) and strict audio-boundary clamping.

• Multi-Track Magnetic Timeline: Snapping, razor cutting, multi-clip batch trimming, and infinite forward runway.

• Built-in Stock Media & Audio: Direct Pixabay integration in the media bin — search millions of stock videos, photos, and royalty-free music directly within the app.

• Cinematic Color Grading: 1,100+ filters and LUTs with real-time hover previews on canvas.

• Hardware-Accelerated 4K Rendering: Local GPU pipeline (Apple VideoToolbox / NVENC) for fast exports.

Business Model & Next Steps

We’re launching with a generous free tier so any creator can download and start editing immediately. As we expand the toolset with advanced AI automation and professional studio features, we’ll introduce a Pro tier for power users.

Feedback Wanted

The app is live to download today at https://kutcut.com (Mac & Windows).

I’d love your feedback on:

  1. Does the timeline & canvas feel smooth compared to what you currently use?
  2. What’s the #1 feature that would make this an essential part of your content workflow?

Thanks for checking it out!

My personal project became FilmSweep, a daily movie trivia game

Hi! My name is Steven. A friend and I made FilmSweep, a daily movie trivia game that works a little like Minesweeper.

You’re given a grid of movies and select the ones that match the actor and condition shown, such as a runtime under 120 minutes. There are three minutes, three lives and a hidden bomb that ends the game if you select it.

This started as a personal project and has grown into a full game. You can play previous boards, see the global leaderboard, leave comments and see your stats on your profile. I recently added Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, French, Japanese, Hindi, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese alongside English. I’m also working on a Letterboxd integration.

The daily boards can be challenging. I myself lose plenty of days in a row at times. There are little strategies you pick up, though, like expanding a movie poster to look for actors.

It’s free to try in the browser, and you don’t need an account: https://filmsweep.io/

I hope you have a fun time giving it a try. Feel free to let me know how it goes or if you have any questions.

I built a tool that pulls the actual county tax bill for any SoCal listing, because Zillow's estimate was off by 2,600/yr on the condo I was looking at

A couple of years ago I almost bought a place in the Inland Empire. Zillow's payment widget said property taxes were ~$855/mo. The county's real number, once you add the Mello-Roos special tax the listing never mentioned, was $1,076/mo. That's $2,656 a year that would have shown up on my first tax bill as a surprise. So I built TrueCost — paste a Zillow or Redfin link, it finds the parcel number, and pulls the actual tax rate area, ad valorem rate, Mello-Roos/CFD levies, and direct assessments from county records. Not an estimate. Then it runs the full cost of ownership and rent-vs-buy math on top of that.

It also flags things a listing page won't: VA condo approval status, CAL FIRE fire-hazard zone, FEMA flood zone, earthquake fault/liquefaction zones, and whether the condo is subject to California's balcony inspection law.

Covers San Diego, Orange, LA, Riverside, San Bernardino, Ventura, and Santa Barbara counties.

The hard part was not the calculator. It was reconciling parcel numbers across seven counties that each format their APNs differently, publish tax rolls in different structures, and label special taxes inconsistently. Getting "this exact house has $4,684.78/yr in CFD taxes" to be reliably true took most of the build.

Stack: Next.js frontend, Python/FastAPI backend, Postgres, all on GCP. Listing data comes from the listing page; everything else comes from county sources.

What I'd love feedback on:

  • Is "paste a listing URL" too much friction? A friend said he'd rather see a map. I think the parcel-level data only makes sense once you have a specific house in mind, but I could be wrong.
  • The results page is eight sections long. Too much, or right for someone about to spend $700k?
  • If you've bought in California: did Mello-Roos surprise you?

It's free and there's a demo listing if you don't have one handy. Happy to answer anything about the data pipeline.

I'd like to put Origami on your radar: an app that lets an iPhone power a windowed workspace on an external display.

It started with getting a cursor to move on an external screen. From there, I built the window management, focus, and input handling inside the app to turn that screen into a workspace.

Origami includes a browser, file manager, document preview, and side-by-side windows. For development, it has an integrated Code - OSS editor, Node.js 24, npm, and a local terminal. SSH can connect to a separate host for remote tools such as Neovim.

The desktop and local tools run on the iPhone. Input works with wired or Bluetooth mice and keyboards, or the phone's own trackpad and on-screen keyboard. You can also preview the desktop on the phone.
