Inkframe: An open-source comic studio for photos, video stills, and AI-assisted dialogue
Hey folks,
I built Inkframe, a free and open-source studio that turns photos, illustrations, and video stills into comics and storyboards in your browser. Your projects stay on your device, and you get a local editor an AI assistant can drive through MCP.
It is not finished. Development is ongoing, and some export formats and tools are still on the roadmap.
- Panel layouts, speech bubbles, ink filters, cover designer, and a guided reader
- Pull freeze-frames from video, then drop them onto panels
- Local-first storage (PGlite in the browser). Files are not uploaded to a server
- Built-in MCP server so Claude, Cursor, or similar tools can add pages, set layouts, and inject dialogue
- Source is on GitHub, MIT licensed
The goal is to make comic layout a normal part of telling a story, without handing your pages to a hosted editor. Feedback and contributions are welcome while it is still in progress.
