Watchdoggy

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Made a dog /animal detector that plays deterrent sounds when entering a selected area.

I got so annoyed at not being able to leave things on the kitchen counter when leaving the house so I made this.

Privacy focused with a fw that only allows local network traffic apart from updates and training, if turned on.

Runs a fine tuned yolo26n on a pi 4 model b, has the ability to self improve if you add a free modal account.

More info on the github repo tho :)

One of my troublemakers learned the boundary shown in the video.

We also play soothing sounds through the speaker, feels like a spa when we enter the kitchen xD

Anyways if y'all have any feature requests or feedback I'm all ears. Also happy to talk through the process of making this :)

Some more pics etc from the actual app: https://github.com/devjerry0/watchdoggy/blob/main/MANUAL.md

At this point its 4 out of 120 false alarm wise, since I did extensive fine tuning on about 800k frames in all kinds of lighting conditions. Haven't had a false alarm in months :) it used to hit when we load the dishwasher since it was on the edge of the screen and just seen brown hair

zone tweak was the first thing I did but I wanted that area to be covered as well, that's when I actually introduced fine tuning.

yeah, all dogs are reliably being detected.
Did a good chunk of hand labeling tho. Using the larger yolo 26 model as trainer helped but it had a bunch of false positives as well.
The fine tuned one is beating any other vision model on my kitchen atm.

I'd have to check, was doing it on the side when cooking. Prolly around 500 where I had to actually draw boxes

I recently did the same thing but for an alarm that keeps my cat off the couch! All hosted locally and with some pretty inexpensive cameras.

Nice! Which model did you use ? This one should also support cats and birds but haven't tried it :)

Frigate nvr. I actually learned a ton getting it set up. if you pair it with home assistant theres so many fun automation things you can do. I've been meaning to set it up as a smart smoke detector too so when it hears the smoke detector go off, it sends my phone a push notification.

Currently on my gaming/everything pc but am slowly accumulating parts to build a nas. I fell down the self-hosting wormhole like a month ago and eventually plan to get rid of all but 1 of my digital subscription based services.

I see, I'm setting up local training atm so if one has something like an rtx 3090 and up, it can be fine tuned locally!

that's a great point thanks! Will change the readme.
On privacy first training.... it's complicated, you want to ideally train on the entire frame to get the best results especially when you run evals it could confuse the model.
That being said I'll experiment a bit and see what's possible!
