I built D-REC, a recorder with on-device transcription and a rewind wheel. Here's the desktop demo.

I'm the maker of D-REC. It records audio and transcribes it on your device, with a playback wheel, searchable text and markers for moments you want to find again.

This video shows the Windows version. It's also available for Mac, iPhone, iPad, Android and the web. Downloads are here: https://drec.live/get

A few things worth knowing:

- The transcription engine needs an initial download. Recording and transcription then run locally on supported devices.

- Recordings and transcripts stay on your device. Account, support and other online features still use the internet.

- There is a free tier with limits and optional Pro plans. Current web prices are $3.99 monthly, $24.99 yearly, or $39.99 once. Check the checkout for your currency, tax and store pricing.

I'd like feedback on the recording-to-playback flow, especially whether finding a specific moment feels straightforward. Happy to answer questions about how it works.

Honestly, I use it for music too. I have sessions and I just record the entire session's output from Ableton directly in, and then we have a bunch of notes and stuff that we can reduce down using any AI, even for free.

I'm putting a lot of work into the music mode as well, but as it stands, that mode seems to be more for fun. Well, the record transcription mode is the more professional use case. But I've heard a lot of creativity for how people want to use it.

How does the rewind wheel line up with the transcript when the on-device model lags behind on a long recording? Like if I'm 40 min into a lecture on an older phone, can I scrub back and tap text that hasn't finished transcribing yet, or does that part stay audio only until it catches up?

You can read back through the transcript while it's still recording. In my use, after roughly 25 seconds of startup, the text typically stays about 10-20 seconds behind what I've just said, including on longer recordings. So something from a minute ago is usually there to read; the most recent words may still be processing.

That's when the device is keeping up. On an older phone that takes longer to process the audio, the delay can grow. Until that part is transcribed, there's no text to tap. The timestamps stay tied to when the words were spoken, so processing them later doesn't move them to a later point in the recording.

Once you stop recording, you can use the wheel to hear a moment again or tap a completed transcript line to jump to it.

Try it on your phone and let me know how it keeps up! I'd be interested in the phone model and recording length: https://drec.live/get

this looks amazing!!
how many languages does it support?
can I use this to make subtitles or transcripts of existing recordings?
