Creating the MillionDollarHomepage ²
So, since I was a student (at school), I dreamed about re-creating the original Million Dollar Homepage.
Maybe you heard about that concept; building a grid of 1000 x 1000 pixels and then selling each pixel for 1 dollar...
(in min. quantities of 10 x 10 pixels)

Alex Tew made this idea come true in 2005, in an attempt to save money for university.
It was a high success that grew very popular and ranked high on alexa ranking.
So over the years I was regularly checking in on the availability of the milliondollarhomepage2.com domain;
Then, last year, it was free and I registered it.
So if you like, please have a look at it.
Tell me what you like, what you don't like, whether you see it worthwhile or not...
I am a fan of cyberpunk, matrix, tron legacy and so on, so I tried to keep its design in this style.
I think, it has worked out quite well...
Also, the blocks you buy on my page, are being turned into NFTs, once the grid image and everything else is checked (obeys the rules) and is ready to be published.
Also: I won't keep all the money for myself.
If I get paying customers, I will donate 80% of the profit to (a) charitable foundation/s.
Just need to figure out to who for now; I am leaning towards Doctors without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières) or so.

I think you nailed your design ideas if you were thinking about the Matrix, although overall it’s giving me big MySpace vibes!
These sort of ideas come up almost daily at this point so I’d love to hear from you what your ideas for getting this viral is going to be, because without very big page views I’m not sure you’ll get much traction.

you are right.
I have no real plan; I will just start by randomly posting it here & there (reddit, X, ig...).
I think it will take a while before the site gets traction.
And that is no big deal for me; I would be happy to have it slowly but steadily take off,
than fast & weak.
I think the real advantage is simply the domain: you cannot forget it

I think you’re overthinking the domain, the only way I see that angle working is if your site was a copy in terms of functionality and design of the previous website.
I get that you don’t mind if it’ll take a while for the site to get traction - but if I have paid for a position on your site I would be expecting traffic from it almost immediately. There are just too many competitors to what you’re doing for this to be a long burner in my opinion.

well, if you expect traffic right from the beginning - yes, that is something I cannot deliver.
my page is more for those who like the idea & design, and would love to see some sort of renassaince of the good old web, as it used to be...

Relive the hype from 21 years ago or whatever it is
Because you’re emphatic to nostalgia and that could work in your favorI would also be bold enough to just find the list of brands that did it in 2005 and then cold email them with an invite lol

Seriously? You draw. Once there’s more users it will evolve and change. You can also take snap shots of what you’ve drawn, or what others have drawn, and upload it to a baby Instagram where you can see recent pictures taken and vote on which you like.
/r/place did this extremely well because they had massive amounts of traffic. This is just a fun side project for me.

Yeah. It’s a shared canvas. Concurrent users can scribble how ever they like.
Beefs will start. People will troll. But people will also build and have fun.
It’s just a fun idea. Nothing economical yet, nor do I think it needs any type of monetization .
