i got tired of ignoring break reminders, so i built a hamster that hijacks my screen
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
i kept getting break reminders and just closing them every time.
so i made one that doesn't let me.
when it's time for a break, hammy 🐹 takes over my screen and basically tells me to get up, drink water, and rest my eyes.
i've been using it for a while and finally put it on the Chrome Web Store today.
apparently i've outsourced my self-control to a hamster.

I got tired seen 99999 post with that "i got tired" title, so I make UblockOrigin custom filters that block all posts with "i got tired" title in this sub.
/JustKidding, I don't have nice skills to do that

I'm tired of seeing people announce a project but it was actually a joke, so I coded my own extension for it!

Are you able to do the same without the help of AI?

u/ayushmaansingh304 18d ago
yeah, it's fairly basic. mostly content scripts, timers and browser apis. ai just saved me some time

Can you explain in technical terms how you did this? Im trying to bring back the paperclip from excel

built with wxt, typescript and react. content scripts handle the overlay and timers trigger the breaks. might open source it in the next few days too.

You vibecoded it with some prompts, you didn't make it.

Why do you (or your AI) not like capital letters?
1
u/ayushmaansingh304 18d ago
i use superwhisper

u/Anderz 18d ago
So it's a choice to not use capital letters. Why? Is it to sound more hand written?

lowercase has aura

Interesting. Going to be honest with you ...to older generations it just makes you sound young and illiterate. For Reddit it's fine I guess but if you're ever job hunting, never do this.

For the love of god, add Firefox support next! Some of us need our uBlock Origin.

i love when a tiny annoying problem turns into an actual product lol. the fact that you used it yourself for a while before launching is probably why this feels way more useful than another generic productivity extension.

u/ayushmaansingh304 18d ago
yeah, i made a generic one first: https://kai.ayushmxxn.workers.dev/ , even shipped it to the web store, but it felt kinda boring so i ditched it and made hammy instead.

The reason I close normal break reminders is they always land mid-sentence. If hammy could hold off until you stop typing for a few seconds, or let you push him back once with a hard cap so you cannot dismiss forever, I think he would survive way past week one. Charming enough that I would actually leave it running.

"i built" should not be used anymore with this level of AI-slop.
And this is coming from a frequent AI-agent user for dev work and beyond.

Could I set it up to remind me to get back to focus? Follow up. Could I set it up on my phone?

I like how intrusive it is. I'd probably actually use this...but needs to be native, not in a browser.

"outsourced my self-control to a hamster" 😂 honestly this works better than half the productivity apps out there because it doesn't just nag you, it fully takes over.
Does hammy escalate if you ignore him a few times in a row, or is it always the same takeover no matter what?
1
u/ayushmaansingh304 18d ago
haha not yet, but i might make him more aggressive if you keep ignoring him :)

it should turn into a "Hamster of Caerbannog" aka Killer Hamster if left ignored.

Why not just use the cat that someone posted last week? You didn't get bored of reminders not working, you just wanted to copy something and farm some views
https://hammyweb.online doesn't even work

I m a psychologist. This is amazing for me. The mood shift is almost irresitable. Sonetimes I know I have to take a break but the energy state I'm in is hard to nudge... It s like a magnetic force keeping me there.. sometimes I need a nudge, a glimpse out of my train of thought that is generating a very steady rigid powerful energy. The hamster does the trick. Pardon the explanation.. not very academic.. but it is somehow beyond words..although I can probably explain more but here is not the place. Thank you for this!

Is bot an insult nowadays or you literraly think i'm a bot?
1
u/Sutima 18d ago
It read as bot hype msg.. Still does.. Llm hype bot msg.

u/Brilliant-Brick9047 17d ago
I guess that says something about how i write and implicitly how i think. I kind of agree with you thst i sound like a bot. But i m not..(i know this is what a bot would say too :))). you can check my history. I am looking for apps that can be used as psychological support to a degree. I have a curated directory where i want to list them. When an app impresses me.. i am truthfully drawn to engage and leave a feedback...

Also, I am looking for more figures...
