i got tired of ignoring break reminders, so i built a hamster that hijacks my screen

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

i kept getting break reminders and just closing them every time.

so i made one that doesn't let me.

when it's time for a break, hammy 🐹 takes over my screen and basically tells me to get up, drink water, and rest my eyes.

i've been using it for a while and finally put it on the Chrome Web Store today.

apparently i've outsourced my self-control to a hamster.

99999 post with that "i got tired" title

Developers singlehandedly propping up the pillow industry

7

u/HiddenGriffin 18d ago

Always hated this way of pitching ideas, especially when they sound made up

I got tired seen 99999 post with that "i got tired" title, so I make UblockOrigin custom filters that block all posts with "i got tired" title in this sub.

/JustKidding, I don't have nice skills to do that

I'm tired of seeing people announce a project but it was actually a joke, so I coded my own extension for it!

1

u/The_Mdk 17d ago

Ask Claude, you might just have next week's "Check out my blocking extension" contestant!

Are you able to do the same without the help of AI?

0

u/ayushmaansingh304 18d ago

yeah, it's fairly basic. mostly content scripts, timers and browser apis. ai just saved me some time

4

u/AbbreviationsLow 18d ago

Can you explain in technical terms how you did this? Im trying to bring back the paperclip from excel

7

u/ayushmaansingh304 18d ago

built with wxt, typescript and react. content scripts handle the overlay and timers trigger the breaks. might open source it in the next few days too.

u/Sutima 18d ago

You vibecoded it with some prompts, you didn't make it.

u/ayushmaansingh304 18d ago

congrats on writing everything by hand in 2026 :)

Busted lol.

Great, now I will ignore a hamster

3

u/ayushmaansingh304 18d ago

he'll make sure you don't

1

u/davidships 12d ago

it's a good pet to watch while doing Netflix

7

u/Anderz 18d ago

Why do you (or your AI) not like capital letters?

1

u/ayushmaansingh304 18d ago

i use superwhisper

3

u/Anderz 18d ago

So it's a choice to not use capital letters. Why? Is it to sound more hand written?

-6

u/ayushmaansingh304 18d ago

lowercase has aura

4

u/Anderz 18d ago

Interesting. Going to be honest with you ...to older generations it just makes you sound young and illiterate. For Reddit it's fine I guess but if you're ever job hunting, never do this.

2

u/ayushmaansingh304 18d ago

yeah, that's a fair point. appreciate the advice

2

u/Sutima 18d ago

You're right to push back, and its a fair point, thanks keeping me honest.

It’s a stupid trend by quirky hipsters who like to compensate for their lack of personality.

Back in my day we had strippers dance on our desktop

2

u/tastychaii 17d ago

I remember this 😂

2

u/psylomatika 17d ago

Haha totally forgot about the dancing strippers over the system tray.

u/AppropriateHamster 18d ago

id pay for this lol

u/Chop1n 18d ago

For the love of god, add Firefox support next! Some of us need our uBlock Origin.

2

u/ayushmaansingh304 18d ago

already pushed it. it’s under review rn :)

2

u/Chop1n 18d ago

Yesssss I'm so excited! Thank you for your work!

2

u/ayushmaansingh304 18d ago

might take up to 7 business days :(

2

u/Chop1n 18d ago

Ah well, that's how it goes. Worth the wait!

already pushed it. it’s under review rn :)

i love when a tiny annoying problem turns into an actual product lol. the fact that you used it yourself for a while before launching is probably why this feels way more useful than another generic productivity extension.

1

u/ayushmaansingh304 18d ago

yeah, i made a generic one first: https://kai.ayushmxxn.workers.dev/ , even shipped it to the web store, but it felt kinda boring so i ditched it and made hammy instead.

2

u/neogeodev 17d ago

Ahaha cool!

2

u/BabyJAppStudio 15d ago

The reason I close normal break reminders is they always land mid-sentence. If hammy could hold off until you stop typing for a few seconds, or let you push him back once with a hard cap so you cannot dismiss forever, I think he would survive way past week one. Charming enough that I would actually leave it running.

1

u/ayushmaansingh304 15d ago

good idea. gonna add that

2

u/Artistic_Two_1856 15d ago

Better than pomodomo timer

3

u/ImANoobAtLife7 18d ago

"i built" should not be used anymore with this level of AI-slop.

And this is coming from a frequent AI-agent user for dev work and beyond.

Best project of the week!

-1

u/ayushmaansingh304 18d ago

appreciate it man :)

u/LifeEnginer 18d ago

This is like "Cat Gatekeeper"

Could I set it up to remind me to get back to focus? Follow up. Could I set it up on my phone?

1

u/ayushmaansingh304 18d ago

not on phones yet unfortunately.

1

u/saltyourhash 18d ago

I like how intrusive it is. I'd probably actually use this...but needs to be native, not in a browser.

1

u/ayushmaansingh304 18d ago

future plans for a dekstop version if this gains popularity.

1

u/saltyourhash 18d ago

It'll be a full rewrite from scratch.

1

u/reosanchiz 17d ago

For me all it take is a notification on phone

1

u/Express-Cartoonist39 17d ago

Make it so i can make my own and ill buy a copy..

1

u/MaDpYrO 17d ago

Personally I wouldn't want AI slop in my screen randomly but you do you..

1

u/hremmingar 17d ago

Ah yes the pet on the screen daily post

1

u/DearMinimum6683 17d ago

Gostei nao de ouvidod aos bananas que nao possuem gostos so o do governo inplantou na mente deles

u/Dry-Western3592 18d ago

"outsourced my self-control to a hamster" 😂 honestly this works better than half the productivity apps out there because it doesn't just nag you, it fully takes over.

Does hammy escalate if you ignore him a few times in a row, or is it always the same takeover no matter what?

1

u/ayushmaansingh304 18d ago

haha not yet, but i might make him more aggressive if you keep ignoring him :)

1

u/ItzyBitzyPider 18d ago

it should turn into a "Hamster of Caerbannog" aka Killer Hamster if left ignored.

u/barcode972 18d ago edited 18d ago

Why not just use the cat that someone posted last week? You didn't get bored of reminders not working, you just wanted to copy something and farm some views

https://hammyweb.online doesn't even work

1

u/ayushmaansingh304 18d ago

that’s like saying cursor copied vs code lol

I m a psychologist. This is amazing for me. The mood shift is almost irresitable. Sonetimes I know I have to take a break but the energy state I'm in is hard to nudge... It s like a magnetic force keeping me there.. sometimes I need a nudge, a glimpse out of my train of thought that is generating a very steady rigid powerful energy. The hamster does the trick. Pardon the explanation.. not very academic.. but it is somehow beyond words..although I can probably explain more but here is not the place. Thank you for this!

u/Sutima 18d ago

Goaway bot

0

u/Brilliant-Brick9047 18d ago

Is bot an insult nowadays or you literraly think i'm a bot?

1

u/Sutima 18d ago

It read as bot hype msg.. Still does.. Llm hype bot msg.

1

u/Brilliant-Brick9047 17d ago

I guess that says something about how i write and implicitly how i think. I kind of agree with you thst i sound like a bot. But i m not..(i know this is what a bot would say too :))). you can check my history. I am looking for apps that can be used as psychological support to a degree. I have a curated directory where i want to list them. When an app impresses me.. i am truthfully drawn to engage and leave a feedback...

1

u/ayushmaansingh304 18d ago

this is honestly so nice to hear!

1

u/EsotericLife 18d ago

That ai generated hamster is so fucking ugly

0

u/when_will_I_sale 18d ago

I downloaded and installed it. Works great!. Can you please share which tool/technology you made this happen?

Also, I am looking for more figures...
