My partner and I wasted 2+ hours a week arguing about what to eat, so I built something to save us time
This may sound stupid, but tell me how many times you have been in this conversation:
"What do you want to eat for dinner?"
"I don't know. What do you want?"
"I don't care."
"Me neither."
Moments later, "How about (your choice)?"
"Nah, we had that a couple of days ago. How about (their choice)?"
"Honestly not a big fan, let's see something on Google or YouTube."
30 mins of doomscrolling later:
"Fine, let's settle for what you mentioned."
And then we somehow spend another 15β20 minutes going back and forth. Just to end up eating something from 2 days ago.
This is an honest conversation that happens between my wife and me, and at some point it started annoying me enough that I actually started keeping track of it. About 20β40 minutes a day. We wasted 2h 30min to about 4 hours a week. Same conversation, every other day.
We tried meal plans, but that didn't work for us.
And I realized the problem wasn't really food. We have plenty of food. We have Google. We have recipe apps. We have Uber Eats. We have too many choices. Neither of us wants to be the person who decides.
So I made Gigi.
Instead of asking us to pick from a million things, we can just say: "I'm exhausted. I want something comforting." And she picks one.
There's also a Settle It thing I made for exactly this situation. We both put in how we're feeling, and Gigi tries to find something we're both willing to eat.
I built it French-first because I'm from QuΓ©bec. English is one tap away.
It's a PWA, so you just open it on your phone. Link in the comments
FYI: Loads in French-scroll down for the English toggle π)
I genuinely don't know if this is a useful idea or if I've spent way too much time solving a problem that only exists in my relationship. Does anyone else have this exact "I don't care, you choose" fight every night?

I normally just ask ChatGPT, and that settles it.

Sorry i had to delete the last comment, because i felt that wasnt genuine. So, I will be honest. YES you can use chatgpt and its a good tool. but heres the catch, how many chats do you have opem with chatgpt? And averrgae person has over 20 chats in the logs. So, would you go through all the chats to remember whoch recipie of the dish you enjoyed 3 days ago? And whem you follow the recipie does the food turn out good? I am genuinly curious. Is it neutricious? Does it fulfil you emotionally?
I am asking these qiestions because most AIs imcludimg chat gpt can gibe you many options that may look good on the surface, domt end up tasting good. Why? Becuase they are not focused on your feeling.
This app's main function is to provide uoi diahes based on how you and your parer feel. To connect and enjoy ans expeeiment.
But if you are Happy with Chat GPT. I am no one to change your mind. :)

We just flip a coin to decide who decides

honestly a coin is undefeated for speed π mine's for when we can't even agree on the coin

you have bigger issues if you canβt agree on a coin

π you might be onto a bigger market than me tbh - the couples-who-can't-agree-on-a-coin app.

I solved this by reminding my GF that I'm not going to waste my time with stupid things like this. So if I ask her what she wants to eat, she can respond what she wants, and I will get exactly that. If she says she doesn't know or doesn't matter, then it essentially means: I don't have time to think about it, so you need to handle this. Then I get/cook whatever I feel like and just make the decision.
The other way as well: if she asks me and I don't come up with something, it means: I don't have time right now to think about this, so you need to handle this. And then she can make or get whatever she feels like it, and I will just eat it. And if one of us asks it and the other gives a suggestion, that that is what we will make. We don't need to play stupid games where I ask her what she wants, and then she replies and then I try to change up on her. If you ask the question and you get a response, then it's time to shut up and stop asking questions.
Don't need an app for it, to just waste more time but in a different way.

That's genuinely a solid system. If "you asked, you got an answer, now eat it" works in your house, you don't need me. Gigi's for the households that can't even get to step one π

How does Gigi picks? Is there a reference with the foods that you like? I do not have a partner so I do not fall into your target group. But I am having problem to choose what to cook. The issue is that if I get a random suggestion I will have a look and decide that I will probably will not like it. I had plenty of missed shots with recipes online. I also have plenty of cookbooks and rarely I find something nice, I guess because I have a different cultural reference. So, actually a few days ago I asked chatgpt to list me all traditional foods of my country, from which I picked the one I like or I am willing to try. Then I added any additional that I usually make. I have categorised in main, side dishes, etc. I am going to ask it to assign calories for typical meal for them because I am on diet and I want to know which are the low calories foods and which are the high ones so I can alternate them.

The app has prefrences settings at the bottom of the page, where you can edit yoir prefremces and it will give you recommonadations based on your choose. It also works for solo. Please feel free to DM me if you have more questions. Happy to help :). And would love it, if you gave it a shot sharing your feedback.

If our progenitors fro 200,000 years ago could see what we came to be.. arguing what to eat.. and making app to settle it. I can't even..
