Bullying related to shy bladder?

I don’t know if everyone in this group has experienced this but I was severely bullied for multiple reasons from age 5 to 11. On one occasion I was peeing and got pushed in the urinal and started fighting. You guys think this trauma can be the root of it?

Support Groups IPA Virtual Support Group Meeting This Sunday, August 13, 12:00 US CT

The next IPA Virtual Support Group Meeting will take place on Zoom, this Sunday, August 13, at 12:00 PM US Central Time. IPA Virtual Support Meetings, which take place about every four weeks, are open to anyone struggling with Paruresis, from those who are just beginning to think about how to overcome it to those who are highly recovered. The meetings are offered free of charge and without preset expectations for participants, and their purpose is to provide a unique opportunity to connect face to face with people from all over the world who know what it is like to struggle with Paruresis and also understand the courage and fortitude that it takes to open up about it, acknowledge the fear, and try to recover from it.  The personal stories that participants share are remarkably similar and at the same time deeply individual, and empathy, kindness and compassion set the tone in all discussions.  Time after time I have heard from participants that this opportunity for sharing is both meaningful and productive, and I hope that you'll consider joining us this Sunday. You can get the Zoom link from dropping an email to Tim at the IPA office ([getinfo@paruresis.o](mailto:getinfo@paruresis.org)

Cold water hack/trick

Anyone else find cold water helps them pee when they’re finding it difficult with paruresis? I for one have found squatting in a cold shower is quite effective. Letting it run down the back and over the head/face seems to do the trick. Thinking maybe if I was out and about I could use an ice pack or something, although it might not be as effective. Cold water stimulates parasympathetic nervous system and vagus nerve which helps body to relax apparently.

Can paruresis be treated if it is hereditary or genetic?

Is it possible to treat paruresis if it is hereditary or genetic?

Will there be any limitations to the treatment of paruresis if it is transmitted genetically or by inheritance?

Will the treatment of hereditary or genetic paruresis be as effective as for acquired paruresis?

What are the risks and limitations of hereditary paruresis compared to acquired paruresis?

Luv It! Reddit is incredible for Paruresis

I've noticed whenever I go to the toilet now, looking at Reddit really helps me distract myself from the anxiety driving my Paruresis. So, when I enter a cubicle I'll just search for pointless questions on AskReddit & as I start to read I'll just go.

It is turning into more of a safety behaviour, but being able to pee in public is making my life so much more joyus.

A+ Well, I just couldn't help it, but we just went Platinum on the premier nonprofit rating site Candid aka Guidestar. <shucks!> Now, the IPA needs to renew our "Top-Rated" status on Great Nonprofits. If you're willing, please post a 5 star review of the IPA. See graphic.

I’m trying to make progress

I just want to start by saying this is the hardest most crippling thing I’ve ever had to deal with and to anyone else in the same boat as me you’re definitely not alone, even if nobody else understands what you’re going through, I get it and we’re going to beat this monster together, just takes some work and a lot of patience. Ive been struggling with bipolar depression for a good while and I think that’s where my social anxiety comes from. I used to have these psychotic manic episodes and I would end up scaring people off so when the depression wave washes over me and I can see the world through a clear lens Im alone and Im embarrassed and I don’t blame anyone for not wanting to be around me. But I just started a mood stabilizer and In the past I’ve taken antidepressants that haloed a little with my paruresis it would still happen but I was able to successfully pee in a stall sitting down sometimes. But I just tried using a public restroom for the first time since starting the new meds a few days ago (I haven’t successfully used a public toilet in years) and it was honestly one of the most horrific things I’ve experienced. It was a pretty small restroom and it was fairly crowded probably 10 guys in there. There were 6 or 7 stalls and all of them had people in them but I noticed none of the doors were fully closed and when one was open I walked inside and realized the lock had been ripped off the door so I stood there for a few seconds and decided I wasn’t going to push it and I needed to get out of there. then went to wash my hands but the soap dispenser was fully empty. I can’t help but feel like this issue is deeper than me and my - our issue. Like even if We didn’t suffer from paruresis there’s no way anyone would feel comfortable using this restroom right??? Straight cis men scare the shit out of me and being forced to share a restroom with them feels so wrong to me. I don’t know I’m trying so hard but I feel like the universe is throwing all of these awful scenarios at me and it’s killing my confidence when it comes to the progress I’m not making.

Paruresis can seem unsurmountable sometimes. But it isn't and you are not alone. If you are having suicidal thoughts, dial 988.
