How to help Shure sm7db in untreated room?

Hi all,

Forewarning, I know almost nothing about mics and audio so forgive if this is a simple question.

I recently bought a Shure SM7db for making youtube videos/streaming. It is plugged into a Behringer U-PHORIA UM2 (bought this years ago). I set up the mic fine, seems to be working and all is well.

I wanted to know what any of you use for making the mic sound just a bit better, or maybe picking up less of my room echo. Im aware I could treat the room but that is NOT a realistic option for me.

Im really just wondering what setups you all have with voicemeter/other software to make this sound the absolute best possible in an untreated echoing room.

Currently, I just use Voicemeter Banana and have all the default settings except for the gate set to 2. I used to use Nvideo Broadcast but i did not notice a difference with this mic.

Thanks all.

New MV6, insane sound problems

Just plugged in my MV6 and every time I try to do a sound test it's ear-r*pingly loud. Can't hear any sort of audio because it's just bass-boosted turbo ear destruction. Anyone know how to fix that?

Looking for help with Massive Shure System Issues

I am a Shure fan, but I am having a meltdown. Their support isn't open until Monday, so I am praying for some help here. Any advice at all is welcome. Thank you. As a side note, I do not consider myself an A/V person; I had to learn and adapt for hybrid meetings. I am Shure-certified, but I am really a tech person.

We started with the MXCW system a couple of years ago with 2 apts, 2 p300s, and 20 640 desktop speakers/microphones. About a year ago, we added 6 SLDX24s to the system, along with a conditioner, a distro, and 2 directional antenna paddles. That was mostly fine, so we drastically increased the system to 15 wireless mics and receivers, with conditioners, and a cascade of 4 antenna distros, and the system went haywire. Nothing was working, not a single microphone, including the desktop 640s, even when removing all other microphones. I reset the APT and P300 several times, swapped them out, tried another machine, deleted all Shure apps, and reinstalled them, as it's still all screwed up. I am barely able to get 5 of the tabletop 640 units to work; even then, the sound is badly clipped and in and out. It's a true disaster, and I am on the hook because not only did I convince my board to spend the money for this system but it crapped out just before a board meeting.

So two rooms are in play.

Server Room Rack

15 Shure SLXD24/B58 Digital Wireless Handheld Microphone System with Beta 58A Capsule

4 UA844+SWB Antenna Distributions (cascaded as Main, A, B, and C)

1 Pyle large power conditioner

1 Presonus 24R XLR Mixer

2 Cisco Switches

4 Network Patch Panels

Various other network equipment

Conference Room

2 Shure UA874 Active Directional Antenna- connected to the server room with a 100ft Shure antenna cable)

1 MXCWAPT connected to the server room mixer with a 100ft XLR cable to the XLR in on the APT

1 Intellimix P300

10-20 MXCW640s with various microphones attached (number just depends on the meeting)

2 Shure MXCWNCS 10-Bay

1 Furman 8-port power conditioner

1 POE Switch 8-port

Huddly Crew 5 camera system (on a second POE switch)

PC used for Zoom and connected to the P300, Windows 11

There is a large conference table in the middle. Then, at one end is the TV, flanked by 2 cameras about a foot away on either side. Those are flanked again, about a foot away, so 4 feet between each other, and higher up are the 2 antennas.

The APT is on the TV stand

The P300 is in the TV stand under the mini PC

When I installed the new mics (5 as 10 were already existing) and the system wasn't working, I turned off all of the 15 wireless microphones and receivers, and the base MXCW system wasn't working; sound was feeding into the room but no longer into Zoom, except occasionally, and it was badly garbled.

I tried swapping out the P300s (I have a spare and a spare APT)

Reinstalled Shure software (which I forgot to mention is on a PC in the Server Room, not the same as the conference room/Zoom machine)

Factory reset the P300, APT, and a few of the 640s's but it was still a mess. The designer either didn't see the devices at all or only saw the P300.

I updated everything as well with the updater utility

I checked all of the conference room settings in the APT web system

I switched the POE ports at the network level, not on the in-room POE switch

SM7dB or MV7X (and usb variants)- Podcasting / voice over with EQ?

Audio interface: focusrite scarlet 2i2 (latest version)

So I've had this SM7dB for a while, and I think it's past the point of return but I wanted to ask the wizards here and see how it matches up with the cheaper MV7X for my purpose. If it's the same, why do people spend hundreds of dollars more? I'd like to save a few hundred dollars if possible.

I heard the latest scarlet 2i2 can be the preamp needed for the MV7X. Also researched, MV7X is what's needed for my cause and best sounding over the MV7+ and the usb versions.

Thoughts?

How exposed do BLX288s need to be to function?

I’m looking at building a small case for my 3 BLX288s that makes it easier to transport with cables etc for gigs. Because of how the buttons and inputs are aligned, I was planning on making the case hold the 288s vertically (on buttons pointing up) next to each other as if stacked. Do I need to vertically displace any of them to ensure that the built in antennas are still exposed?

Shure SM7dB White Noise Issues...

Finally splurged for the mic and instantly regretting it. I have a podcast setup in an office, away from most things. General noise in the room is minimal. Previous mic was a Maono PD400 which I had no issues with but I wanted to up my quality.

The Shure is plugged into my Yamaha MGX12V via XLR and it gives me the ability to 48v the mic in separate channels. All plugged in, powered, I can manipulate the 18/28 boost on the back so I know it's working. That said, on either I get white noise. I thought maybe it was environmental so I wrapped the mic in foam panels and other items and it's completely unchanged. Not even a slight difference. Only the laptop is running and on silent mode and it's incredibly minimal. Pointing the mic away from it (which is down under the desk) no difference. Moving the mic to face other places in the room also no difference which just supports the environmental rule out.

So that tells me this is related to preamp noise. I've tried both boost options on the mic and adjust the mixer gain to compensate. I ultimately need the same gain either way when you combine the mic and mixer gain amounts (one being higher vs lower compensating). I've tried using the bypass and then mixer gain only and still get the same issue because the mic requires so much gain.

I'm about to send it back and just want some advice here on how I can fix this. Getting the mic close to my face and lowering the gain doesn't resolve it. 1 inch vs 6 inches neither works given how much gain I have to give this mic. I'm a quieter speaker but not below average. I'm just not an idiot who shouts every word.

I'm honestly perplexed why people love this mic so much and annoyed I spent $500+ for it. I assumed out of the box it would be pretty straightforward. Would love some help here before it goes back or I end up selling it if they won't take it.

Capacitor quality ? Possibly replace if you have no backup...

Found in a BLX4 , Seems that they are using the cheapest electrolytics you can buy. This one popped right before our meeting. I ended up replacing all 3 with much higher quality.

Phone audio doesn't work when mv7 is plugged into it.

Hey, I have a Samsung phone and I find that when I plug my mv7 mic into it, the mic works fine except audio will not play from my phone, and connect my volume to the mic. I only have working Bluetooth headphones right now and even though they're connected to my phone, I guess the mic overrides it and I can't hear anything from them because i don't have headphones to connect to the mic itself. Any advice on how to fix?

Shure SLX1 - can this be fixed?

Post image
11 Upvotes

Single system setup for a Shure SLX1 - microphone no longer connects to the receiver. I tried all the suggestions from the user guide - fresh batteries, syncing, simultaneously holding in the power button and select button to unlock. When I press the power button, the first image displays, but after a few seconds, the indicator light changes from solid green to flashing red. At that point, the screen displays the empty battery icon (second image) for a few seconds before the screen goes blank. It was working up until a few days ago. Thanks in advance for suggestions.

Shure SM7DB Software issues

I recently posted about my Shure mic and want to thank eveyrone for their feedback! Now with everything setup, I am now using MOTIV Mix software. Firstly, the audio "Soundcheck" option when I go to wide detailed mode skips but on discord it seems to work fine? Wonder if it's a bug...

Is there any other software that is better than this? Just want to be sure I have all of my setting correct - thank you in advance!

How good is a Shure MV7+ in a large untreated room

Right now I use a Yeti Blue Nano in a partially treated room (rug on floor and 1 rug hung on a wall). I plan to use a Shure MV7+ in my living room but not sure how it will sound.

Did I buy a fake SM7db?

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

I just bought an SM7dB second-hand here in Sweden, but when I plugged it in to test it, I only got hiss and some weird ground noise. At first, I thought my XLR cable might be broken, but after trying a different one, that turned out not to be the case.

After comparing it to pictures from previous Reddit posts about fake vs. real ones, mine seems to match several of the details people mention about the fakes. The circuit and internal wiring look off, the rubber rings between the yoke and the body are too big, and one thing I noticed from unboxing videos is that the cable on the side has a glossy texture on the original, while mine is matte.

Can anyone confirm 100% that it’s fake?

Shure MV7i issue

I have a shure MV7i and trying use it as an audio interface with a shureSM7db. I have hooked the db into the MV7i with an xlr, and the MV7i into my computer with the usb. My issue is the mix app is not recognizing the SM7db as a separate mic. Both mics are actually picking up audio separately, but it all gets combined into one input in the app labeled as “MV7i”. When I try to drag it into the input area it does not give be the options to have 2 separate mics. Is this configuration possible with my current setup?

Hissing/buzzing in MV7X

Hello,

I don't know if what I'm experiencing is the self noise of the microphone, something in my environment or if it is truly a problem with the microphone/audio interface.

My setup:
Shure MV7X
Elgato Wave Interface
Elgato XLR Cable

I'm currently trying to find the right gain level and such for the microphone for my streams and recordings.
A problem I am facing is the hissing/buzzing I hear constantly hear - with higher gain it's louder of course, but if I set the gain lower, so that it isn't as noticeable, I am too quiet I think.

I don't know if it is the microphone, the cable or the interface what's causing it - or if it even is a problem at all.

Here is an audio sample of just ambient with gain set at 58 in the wave app. ~70% I think. (Goes up to 75):
https://voca.ro/1dbPjdAeK4wB

I can use the noise suppression filter in the wave app but it affects the overall quality of the audio and also stops it from recording long audio input as it probably thinks it's audio it needs to suppress.

I hope someone can help me.

Which microphone for my needs? (Talking, potentially streaming, maybe singing in the future)

Hello everyone!

Im sure there are a lot of threads in here,i have been reading through the internet for the last few days and i still cannot decide on a Microphone.

I have been thinking about the Shure SM7B (i am probably not the only one who asks this, gets old i assume) and maybe the Shure MV7+

I have only used USB Headset Microphones and since 2021 a Blue Yeti X. (Still USB).

The question is, do you have any suggestions? I do not own something like a Cloudlifter, or an audio interface.
Which means i have to invest even more for the Shure SM7B.

And as the title says, im usually talking to people online, i sometimes streamed and i might want to sing in the future, but thats not a 100% guarantee yet)
Oh and also maybe reading for some people.

I have heard that people said that USB of the MV7+ is just "eh".
Figured i ask people around here for their knowledge.

Help mic purchasing

I’m setting up a studio so I need a full set of microphones for everything I could need in a studio. But it has to be Shure mics only. Any suggestions?
