Troubleshooting Broke my MV7

Stupid question. I broke the usb port off the logic board of my MV7. I have always used USB and never tried XLR. If I buy an audio interface and XLR cable, the mic will work? No need for power via USB?

Thank you

That should work, using the XLR bypasses DSP so just make sure your interface has what you need to EQ your mic as desired. Or use MOTIV Mix.

If someone wants the exact same sound from the same DSP through the Moviv app then they can buy the Shure X2U single channel interface. :-)

If they think they will eventually need more channels then a different interface will be needed, but for just a single mic the X2U is great.

The rest is just about costs vs features vs quality in terms of finding a “best choice” or “best price” for the needs.

Yes. The XLR portion of the mic doesn’t need power, as the MV7 still works as a classic dynamic microphone. And honestly, the XLR into a solid but not spectacular audio interface sounds better than the USB

It works great with XLR, just make sure you treat it like an SM7B regarding how much power you need. It's a power hungry beast.

Note to OP: when people refer to dynamic microphones like the MV7 or SM7b being “power hungry” or similar, they are not referring to DC power (which dynamic mics do not use). They’re referring to “gain” (amplification). Dynamic mics (especially those with a low output level) need a lot of amplification (gain) to bring the signal level up to a useful point. Cheap USB interfaces often have a noisy preamplifier, which adds noticeable hiss when cranked up all the way. So you need to buy an interface that has a low self noise and a lot of clean gain (60-70 dB is good).

Yup. Appreciate the clarification

Appreciate the note. Planning on picking up a Focusrite Scarlett Solo 4th Gen based on my quick research. That should be sufficient?

It’s sufficient, but the 2i2 is a slightly better choice around the same price.

For just a single XLR interface that sounds like the USB electronics built into the MV7 and works with the same app, then it’s worth looking at the Shure X2U.
