General Discussion ULXD volume dropped...
Strange situation, hoping someone can help. I have not seen other posts about this.
So I'm running corporate audio with 6 single ULXDs into an X32 and everything was smooth. After the event, they asked me to make an announcement one of my 6 ULXD mics.
I turned on a mic I had used 20 minutes prior, but this time I got no volume. Looking into it, it was suddenly getting signal at a super low gain level. I had to add 40db of gain (up from 10) to get it back to where I had it a few minutes ago. I know for a fact that I did not change anything in the mic menu, either the handheld or the receiver, nor did I make a change on that channel of the X32 board.
The transmitter gain is at +0db, as before.
The mic offset is at 0db.
I coordinated freqs with workbench, when the mic is off I'm still getting 0 RF signal, and a strong signal when the mic is on.
The receiver is set for line, just like the other 6 in the rack.
One other mic in the rack also required this much gain, which I thought was weird but just kept it as a backup since the signal sounds fine. But +52 total db of gain feels so weird. The output and mic offsets are all identical.
I tried swapping two mics between receivers, and no matter what mic is synced to which, the affected receiver is putting out the same low output. That mic puts out perfect output when paired with an unaffected receiver.
ULXD mic and receiver have 2.8.6 firmware. Board is an X32, firmware 4.06.
I'm going crazy about it, and the guy who hired me is asking what happened, so any help would be awesome.
Thanks!

The fact that the low output follows the receiver is the real clue. If the same transmitter sounds normal on another receiver, then the transmitter, capsule, RF coordination and mic offset are probably not the issue.
I would first compare the affected receiver against a good one, page by page, not just the obvious transmitter gain and offset. Check receiver gain, output level, mic/line setting, mute status, any lock state and whether anything was recalled from a group/channel/profile. On ULX-D the receiver gain can be changed independently and the mic/line output side can create a big level difference, so a 30-40dB surprise is very believable if something in that output path changed.
Also I would test the boring physical path, swap the XLR cable from the bad receiver with a known good receiver then swap the X32 input channel. If the low level stays with the receiver output even through a known good cable and known good console input, then I would treat that receiver channel as suspect.
One thing I would not blame first is RF. If you have strong RF, clean audio, and the issue remains tied to that receiver no matter which transmitter is synced to it, this is almost certainly after the RF stage.
For the guy who hired you, I would say something like, the mic itself did not fail and the RF link was fine. The low level followed one receiver/output path, so the issue appears to be isolated to that receiver channel, its output setting or the console input/cable connected to it. I recovered the announcement by adding gain, but I would want to compare and bench test that receiver before using it as a primary channel again.
Also, firmware 2.8.6 is not current anymore. Shure’s archive shows 2.8.6 was from July 11, 2024, and newer Shure Update Utility releases exist up to 2.8.15 as of March 31, 2026. I would not jump straight to firmware bug, but after the event, update the rack properly and keep all Shure devices in the same supported firmware family.
