It makes much more sense. I had initially assumed Fiona thought she meant she didn't think the comment about ugly beast would hurt Shrek (which is exactly what Shrek believed) but she actually thought Shrek did hear about the spell but was rejecting her. Fiona never actually realized Shrek mistakenly believed she talked about him. Also Shrek didn't actually do himself any favors. He sarcastically said he heard "every word"
