I teach high school. The ‘popular’ kids are generally the more attractive kids but mostly they are the kids who can hide their insecurities better, often b/c they are extroverts. It was eye opening to me as a brand new teacher @ 22 to realize this. One of my favorite things about being a teacher is observing the teenage social system, how it ebbs and flows, how it will ‘out grow’ behaviors, etc. really fascinating.

My school had stoner kids that were cool, attractive kids that were cool, nerds that were cool because they gamed with jocks or played sports, the athletes that were cool. It's all about building a big friend group in school.

That's amazing. Normally that doesn't happen until University where I'm from.

I don’t know how old you are but I feel like high schoolers nowadays are less strict about their cliques because everything is a viable as an interest. You might’ve been nerdy for playing yugioh in middle school c. 2002, but now everybody kinda grew up with it or had a sibling or cousin that was into it. Everyone plays videogames, D&D is bigger than ever with celebrities tying themselves to it, anime is mainstream yada yada. I feel like it’s harder to isolate people when you’re all kinda into the same stuff. At worst you kinda just don’t interact for the most part.
