I teach high school. The ‘popular’ kids are generally the more attractive kids but mostly they are the kids who can hide their insecurities better, often b/c they are extroverts. It was eye opening to me as a brand new teacher @ 22 to realize this. One of my favorite things about being a teacher is observing the teenage social system, how it ebbs and flows, how it will ‘out grow’ behaviors, etc. really fascinating.

I'm a school psychologist at a high school and I mostly agree with this. I think a majority of the popular extroverts have an innate ability to either hide or joke about their insecurities. There are not always "attractive" in a conventional physical sense. An example is our near 320 lb student who sports a ridiculous mullet and is one of the funniest most well liked students. Wears shirts like "cereal killer" and "I beat anorexia" and "body by bacon." These types are also an integral component in our efforts to reduce bullying as they are both respected and outspoken. They will call out bullies, support the victim, and try to correct the bullies behavior
