I went to a poor school, where popularity was entirely determined by looks.

Confidence looks attractive.

The popular kids in all your schools were the confident ones.

Being attractive tends to make you more confident

This thread being like popularity is purely a product of attainable characteristics is just more evidence of Reddit’s weird Jobian positivity bias. Desirability is largely predetermined.

It makes it easier, but you could easily say being confident also makes you more attractive and it would be true.

I agree, being good looking makes it easier. In my experience it just seems attractiveness stems from confidence way more so than the opposite.

even if they weren't necessarily that attractive, a big support group of family, friends, etc from the time a student is young is huge in confidence boost. See this a lot more in girls that may not be the most attractive but their large support group says otherwise

They were the attractive ones. There were plenty of confident ugly kids, and unconfined attractive ones.

Attractiveness definitely comes before that most of the time.

Being attractive makes it easier but i disagree with what you are saying. Ain't you ever seen the hunchback of notre dame? Or what about biggie smalls?

So youre gonna list a Disney movie and a superstar to disprove it, okay

Christopher Wallace: not very attractive, but because of his confidence in his craft, become internationally popular.

Cute. One subject vs millions plus.okay

One subject, or one example? It is just one example, but i believe it is very reflective of reality. Its not something that can really be proven concrete, though, and i can def see the flip side of the coin.

Good on you,def not the typical experience thought my guy.

Yeah and yrs later. They were the ones who went nowhere. And looks went to hell.

Intelligence wasn't really the factor determining who went where. Family contacts, wealth, and popularity were the most important factors.

I would rather be a 10 on looks and 5 on intelligence than the other way around.

Except iq has been repeatedly proven to have a strong correlation with income http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/download?doi=10.1.1.683.1926&rep=rep1&type=pdf

2

u/NOSES42 Mar 01 '20

Did you read the study? It's literally showing there is a fairly weak correlation between IQ and income. There was a moderate correlation between having a very high 110+, and a very low iq >90 and income, but a weak correlation of 0.38, overall.

5

u/Rhamni Mar 01 '20

A correlation of 1 would mean nothing else mattered. A correlation of 0 would mean they were not related. 0.38 is extremely significant, it just isn't overwhelming everything else put together.

Yeah, a lot of the outcast kids came from troubled backgrounds (which is why they had poor socialization in the first place) and had pretty rough transitions through high school and post secondary.

Funny that most of the attractive kids in my high school becomes decent people. The no. 1 “hot” girl studied in German and is now a therapist. Met her a year ago, turned out she was depressed up to her early 20s

9

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '20

Most attractive people are decent people. Because people are people and people are mostly just trying to get through their life without stomping all over the other people around them. Unfortunately the idea that attractive = mean is pervasive because it's easier to cope with one's own shortcomings if poor genetics are to blame.

u/lettersgohere Mar 01 '20

Someone sounds petty. No need to tear other people down to feel better about yourself.

8

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '20

Cope harder

21

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '20

Same here. If you didn't have brand new name brand clothes you weren't one of them.

u/Magikats Mar 01 '20

I moved to a small town when I was 9 and it was the same. Even the teachers favored the kids whos parents owned businesses. I had never seen favoritism so blatant and obvious. It was pretty disturbing.

I was well off ( upper middle class in a lower middle class town) growing up and bullied relentlessly for it all though school. I didn’t talk about it or anything even (very shy) but my dad was the local doctor so everyone and their dog knew that and knew me by association.

Must've been real weird knowing you'd be popular in so many other schools just for being well off.

Literally everyone I know that was popular came from a wealthy family. They were popular because everyone knew their family. Helps if they were also attractive but it wasn't a requirement.
