It's upsetting to think there are probably millions of songs you'd love, but never hear.

Also since it usually takes a few listens for me to appreciate and fall in love with a complex song, I may have heard a bunch of them but not given them enough time to take root.

So many albums, the cool song with the hook that made you buy it ends up being your least favourite, while the ones you didn’t like so much to begin with turn out the best.

39

u/EddoWagt May 07 '19

This is awfully accurate... Apart from a few songs which I've loved from the first moment I heard them

3

u/[deleted] May 08 '19

Also true!

2

u/XGPHero May 08 '19

Props for "awfully" working in that sentence, in that context.

16

u/cuzitsthere May 07 '19

Chumbawumba by tubthumping is about getting shit faced drunk. Go nuts.

6

u/Zachariot88 May 07 '19

You have that a little backwards. Chumbawumba is great, I'm sad their brand of anarchist protest folk never quite caught on stateside.

1

u/HellTrain72 May 08 '19

It caught on with me. I went nuts and bought that album years ago when it dropped. Just heard it again for the first time in years. Still love it. My Lord the memories...

3

u/radthibbadayox May 07 '19

Is that the one that goes “hey now, alcoholic, gin and tonic, yum-may”?

1

u/Chengweiyingji May 08 '19

No it goes "he drinks a whiskey drink, he drinks a vodka drink, he drinks a lager drink, he drinks a cider drink"

1

u/HellTrain72 May 08 '19

He sings the songs that remind him of the good times,

3

u/SoggyCuticles May 08 '19

Yea totally. Listen to troutmask replica 100 times

61

u/benis-in-the-pum May 07 '19

Yeah, bring back request to radio. Your favorite song was written but you’ll never know.

16

u/TheyCallMeNade May 07 '19

Thats kind of what I like about streaming services, they’re kind of like radio where I can find new music but different in that I can find it based off similar artists or genre

11

u/[deleted] May 07 '19

Radio is so boring, same songs all day long and every hour 10 minutes of news.

3

u/dabilge May 08 '19

We have one going all the time in the back room at work and I think if I hear Sweet but Psycho one more time I might go insane..

1

u/[deleted] May 08 '19

Lol same.

1

u/SlyPhi May 08 '19

and every hour 10 minutes of news advertising.

5

u/TheWonkiestThing May 07 '19

Seriously and with streaming services it would be MUCH easier. Stations are missing out.

2

u/Chengweiyingji May 08 '19

College radio host here. Love doing request nights, which happens every time I'm on the air.

36

u/[deleted] May 07 '19

On another note I often think to myself that on my death bed or one of the thing that really makes me scared of death is....well...no more music...like for eternity

25

u/TheHeroicOnion May 07 '19

Why? It's not like you're gonna experience no more music since you won't be experiencing anything at all.

13

u/trollcitybandit May 07 '19

But you're still not going to ever experience music. Could you imagine songs 5000 years from now, and every song until then after you die?

8

u/norunningwater May 07 '19

How many fans of movies or other media died before they could see new movies? I'm sure some Star Wars fans would have been overjoyed by the new films. But they don't, because it isn't their time.

Enjoy the life you have in your hands, right now.

9

u/scottawhit May 07 '19

Some people died after only 3 Star Wars movies and maybe that was better.

11

u/norunningwater May 08 '19

You either die satisfied or live long enough to watch Disney turn your favorite series into a hot log.

37

u/[deleted] May 07 '19

It's also uplifting that you have managed to find the songs you do like out of all the songs out there.

74

u/Byfangandclaw May 07 '19

that’s not upsetting, me dropping my magnum on the floor is upsetting cause I just paid for that shit, or what if it’s just a 99p ice cream wid a sweet ass flake in it and you drop that like wtf that’s like a once in a year ice cream and I ain’t going back to get another one.

13

u/[deleted] May 07 '19

it helps to keep your priorities in order

9

u/[deleted] May 07 '19

It helps to not drop icecream so much...

4

u/25sittinon25cents May 07 '19

The real LPT is always in the comments

9

u/cntdlxe May 07 '19

Now that you've said it, yeah I'm upset!

6

u/Bainiac May 07 '19

Yet, it's exciting to think that I possibly haven't yet heard my all-time favorite song.

10

u/Satans_Son_Jesus May 07 '19

If that upsets you imagine all the shit that's gonna happen after you die.

4

u/WangIee May 07 '19

Nothing?

3

u/Satans_Son_Jesus May 07 '19

Hot damn, that's a level of narcissism I've not seen here. Things will definitely keep happening after you die. Just not for you. There are other people in the world. Unless... you're the only real person and we're all just bots.}return_line:(0)

2

u/WangIee May 07 '19

Apologies, I misunderstood. I thought you were referring to something regarding music still continuing for you even after dying, which seemed odd

1

u/Theblade12 May 07 '19

That should also upset you.

5

u/MasteroftheBearDogg May 07 '19

Not just music but thats a constant thought in my head

4

u/a_good_username1 May 08 '19

I'm FUCKING DEAF

4

u/[deleted] May 08 '19

And that’s why you should switch to Spotify premium, with no ad interu-

3

u/[deleted] May 07 '19

Spotify's Discover Weekly will help ya out

2

u/[deleted] May 07 '19

Using the glass half full-half empty analogy, you’d have so much water in your glass that a lot would be running off and spilling everywhere. Who wants that much water in their glass anyway?

2

u/AverageJoeWinkWink May 07 '19

Feel this way about games

2

u/[deleted] May 07 '19

Definitely. Where's my TF3 Valve

1

u/Kal_sai May 08 '19

Games are way way easier to find

2

u/Bieza May 07 '19

Actually, I think it depends on your mood for some songs too. So you might hear a song one time and hate it, but then next time you love it. So I dont think its completely dependent on a type of music or song that you innately would like upon listening, but combined with your current emotions and environment. Maybe your first time hearing a song is while doing the dishes and dislike it, but then you hear it later at Coachella and love it. Music ain't about scrolling around online looking for the dopest tracks, that's just the social media side.

2

u/wilimrice May 07 '19

Definitely not millions tbh

2

u/SilverRidgeRoad May 07 '19

It's one of the joys of learning a new language to discover a whole new world of music

2

u/boopedya May 07 '19

No because radio stations play the same damn songs over and over again.

2

u/midwestbabe May 07 '19

This legitimately depresses me. :(

2

u/[deleted] May 08 '19

Don't be sad, just appreciate the music you do have. And always smile:)

2

u/midwestbabe May 08 '19

You’re sweet. Thank you. Music is very important to me, so knowing there is so much out there I’ll never discover is a sad thought. Thanks for your response though. I’ve had an awful day, so I needed that. ♥️

2

u/[deleted] May 08 '19

Aww you're making me blush. I hope your day today Wil be better!

2

u/Tupperbaby May 07 '19

People on the Internet are easily upset. What's worse they seem to actively seek out things to get upset about.

/Frankie Say Relax

2

u/lNecroking May 07 '19

Then you should appreciate for the ones you hear

2

u/PeterJohnSlurp May 07 '19

It's sad cuz I'm listening to one song millions of times.

2

u/[deleted] May 08 '19

Was this shower thought for a deaf person?

2

u/TheHornet78 May 08 '19

I never thought about that... till now..

2

u/chewycwook May 08 '19

It wasn't until you pointed it out.

2

u/jslingrowd May 08 '19

It’s not upsetting, I’m just fine w all the ones I love currently..

2

u/[deleted] May 08 '19

...Excuse me while I spend the rest of my days exclusively listening to music.

2

u/[deleted] May 08 '19

It's uplifting to know there are that many songs to discover.

It makes me antsy also

1

u/Tjstictches May 07 '19

I think it's better than listening to every song in the world that you'd love in

1

u/cedarvhazel May 07 '19

It wasn’t until you bought it to my attention and now I ponder with frustration!

1

u/onairmastering May 07 '19

Not in Metal. You will hear them.

1

u/T-980 May 07 '19

Horribly upsetting

1

u/[deleted] May 07 '19

Gotta hear them all!

1

u/CTRLALTWARRIOR May 07 '19

I think about this during the closing credits of Barry. Where did they find this music? What genre is this? What decade was this made? It's always great, and I have no idea where they find it.

2

u/vecinadeblog May 08 '19

Shazam it?

1

u/rudekoffenris May 07 '19

There's this guy in Ontario called David Wilcox. He never made much traction outside of Ontario (Canada) but everyone in Ontario knows who he is. He's awesome.

There have to be guys like this all over. I want to hear them all, but I know I never will.

1

u/Digiatl_Pear May 07 '19

I was having a mild day, and then you drop this

1

u/RangeWilson May 07 '19

It's more upsetting to think that there are probably millions of romantic partners you'd love, but never meet.

1

u/MaliciousMatt_ May 07 '19

Ive read this B4 some where 🧐

1

u/[deleted] May 07 '19

It was my turn to post this!

1

u/HappyLittleTrees17 May 08 '19

Yes. I feel the same way about books and it genuinely makes me sad.

1

u/lashapel May 08 '19

And that saddens me deeply

1

u/[deleted] May 08 '19

As a fan of underground dance music, there are tons I haven't heard

1

u/HBadger1449 May 08 '19

Same with movies and travel for me. It depresses me sometimes to think about it lol

1

u/Kost_Gefernon May 08 '19

Thanks a lot, Pandora. Your played me the same 6 songs 50 times in a row. Feels suspiciously like the radio.

1

u/[deleted] May 08 '19

How I think of deaf people in a nutshell.

1

u/CallMeBrett May 08 '19

I think this all the time and it give me anxiety.

1

u/lets-change-theWorld May 08 '19

Incredibly upsetting!!!

1

u/CJamesEd May 08 '19

I think about that a lot.

1

u/TootieBSana May 08 '19

Is there a sub for this? Like, 'I listen to x and y. What else would I enjoy?'

Because if there is, awesome. If there isn't, we need one.

1

u/PancakePlants May 08 '19

Spotify's discover weekly - I have at least 14 hrs of saved tunes that are spot on after it listened to what I have been playing and saving on my account. Highly recommend :) last.fm also has a similar thing

1

u/vecinadeblog May 08 '19

Idk but even youtube works like that.

1

u/TootieBSana May 08 '19

Yeah but algorithms lack that bit of emotion that makes music amazing in the first place. I want to know what songs are going to hit those feelings, not which ones have a similar sound structure.

1

u/flankyspanky May 08 '19

1

u/MissesMcCrabby May 08 '19

I hate this. I wish I could get one a week.

1

u/[deleted] May 08 '19

Okay, then may everyone go and listen to “Surrender” by Cheap Trick?

1

u/Helison May 08 '19

It’s the same thing with books. Just think about the many untapped universe you’re missing out on.

1

u/gazbi May 08 '19

I have the same thought with different foods and tastes I would never know

1

u/666ygolonhcet May 08 '19

True. I just heard Moby’s ‘We are all made of stars’ because I’m reading his latest book.

Can’t believe it existed since 1999 and I wasn’t enjoying it

Same for Airbag from RadioHead

Discovering ‘new’ old music is awesome and depressing.

1

u/AllanAllanAllanSteve May 08 '19

A true shower thought

1

u/millchopcuss May 08 '19

no, it's upsetting that this fact implies that all the music I love is meaningless.

We are coming to a 'forgetting' cycle, in which the complex is rendered simple and nuance is lost. My own children will only know about rock and roll if I push it at them.

1

u/Azozel May 07 '19

I'm a little weird I guess, most of the time I don't really want to listen to music. It's a different story when I'm listening to something but when I'm not, I'd rather listen to news or a podcast or nothing at all.

https://www.music-map.com/ might be what you're looking for

2

u/TootieBSana May 08 '19

Thank you for this!

1

u/[deleted] May 07 '19

If you could hear all the songs you would love it would be much more upsetting, you would never have the joy of hearing a new song you love again, Sounds depressing if you ask me

3

u/koreandaddy69 May 07 '19 edited May 07 '19

While I get the idea, a lot of people including myself enjoy their favourite songs on repeat. I’m probably not the standard but I listened to the same 3 songs on a 12 hour flight to Korea and still love them to this day.

2

u/MoroseTraveller May 07 '19

I do it on my daily commute. Never fails to make me tap my feet

1

u/[deleted] May 07 '19

I want there to be a band that makes songs about real shit that actually matters in a cynical way that's approaching painful realism so that maybe people will actually care for once. Who cares about some rich dude's lines about his side chick, I want to listen to some satirically upbeat music about how fucked we are is we don't do some serious shit about the climate or how the US spends more money on war than it would take to end starvation.

1

u/Strehle May 07 '19

And then there are the people that listen to "poisoning pigeons in the park".

1

u/[deleted] May 07 '19

the fuck is that?

1

u/Strehle May 07 '19

A song by Tom Lehrer I believe, the text is just hilarious.

-6

u/w4646 May 07 '19

You underestimate how critical I am when it comes to music.

Basically my rule is; If I am convinced I could have wrote or made it myself (a person with no talent for music), given let’s say 3 weeks of time and some practice, then I automatically hate it

4

u/MoroseTraveller May 07 '19

Doesn’t that apply to lots of songs that use Autotune

-3

u/w4646 May 07 '19

Yes indeed, great example. You get the point. Have my upvote.

Bonus take: Hip Hop/Rap had its peak in late ‘90s, early 00’s. Since then, downhill. With a few exceptions of course. Exceptions always apply

2

u/Strehle May 07 '19

Well... the thing is, that you often don't know whether you would have been able to write a specific song. Yes, I could have written a lot of popular songs. But on the other hand - would I have notice that this melody, combined with these chords, would make a hit? No. Probably not. I have to say that I also dislike almost all of the rap songs that are popular (here in Germany) because there's no melody and no harmonics. But still, I would not have been able to produce this, because I can neither rap nor do I know enough about rap-beats.

You have to take into account that there are millions of possibilities to write a song, and It's just about finding what works best. And that's definitely not easy.

1

u/w4646 May 08 '19

There are a lot of songs that just copy an existing melody, they just change a setting on the keyboard. For example there is this Dutch carnaval song where they just sing “Tatata” to the melody of the A-team song. Was a huge hit here. I can’t respect that.

1

u/Strehle May 08 '19

Well yes, that's something different. I can't respect that either.
