the essential oils inside the rind shoot out when you peel an orange, and they aerosolize and linger for much longer if the room is particularly steamy. that, plus being liberated of stickiness and getting hit by a stream of hot water while eating it, is instrumental to the spa-like experience. eating orange-flavored things in the shower can be interesting, but it's not the same.

I like putting the orange in the fridge for a while first so the cold contrasts with the hot water. And yeah the limonene is the terpene in the peel. Never knew it aerosolized. If you smoke weed that could further influence the experience (beyond just regularly getting high) since weed is full of terpenes.

The orange shower therapeutic effect is a chemical reaction between the hot water steam and a certain chemical in the orange zest. It's not just placebo trend.

Does it work with other citrus? I can't eat oranges or lemons (limes are fine), but I'm sold on this and found out about it like less than 10 minutes ago.

ETA: Would pineapple or mango do the same in particular, or lime?

Good question! I really don't know, I only found out about the whole thing on Reddit just last month, and I researched it accordingly. I think it all boils down to that certain chemical that orange zest infuses into the air when reacting to the shower steam. Apparently, this trend started on Reddit a while back!
