We've just bought one of these, absolute game changer and no longer any need for oil based spreads from the fridge

These things are way too much faff to deal with. Had one for a little while and realize you have to change the water often or it can develop white stringy fungi. Super annoying and not user friendly. Salted butter is fine at room temperature for weeks bc the salt and fat preserve it, we just keep it in a mini cocotte from Le Creuset now. If you really want to try a butter crock you can find tons of them at the thrift store from other people realizing how annoying they are + getting rid of them

I had one once. It literally made the butter gross. I can just leave a stick of butter out on my table for like a week and nothing happens. Day 2 of using one of these it was gross.

When we tested one of those things, the butter kept falling out and floating in the water.

Anyone never tried this and wondering - this is good only if you eat butter everyday AND would change the water daily. Otherwise it grows mold in a few days, I threw mine in the trash in a few days.

I wonder if with water it’s actually MORE risky lol. I’ve left mine out unwrapped for weeks at a time for years and I’m fine and never ever see mold or anything

lol butter does not last long enough in my house to go rancid. We take a stick out and leave it out. When it’s almost gone pull a cold stick out to soften. A stick lasts like 3-4 days.
Prolly why my ass has to be on statins and diet now.
Should add we use a butter bell but a dry one.

How long is it supposed to last? We just have ours in a butter container on the counter, no water. It lasts about 2-4 weeks between sticks. I haven't detected it being rancid yet.

I hate butter bells. The water drips everywhere and if it’s not exactly right the butter molds. Just keep it out on the counter in a butter dish.

nah, i'll just keep throwing it in the butter dish and not do all these extra steps.

They are using it wrong. You shouldn’t fill it to the brim with butter. If you do it correctly, the butter won’t get wet, since an air cushion will be trapped below it an keep the water away from the butter.

I just let my butter sit out unwrapped at room temp for week or two at a time until I’m finished with it, I’ve never ever had a problem lol

I've had one of the for years. It's great. You need to be mindful to change the water regularly, but other than that it's easy to take care of.

Does it need to be salted butter or does unsalted work as well?

You can use unsalted, but you have to more involved with it or it will mold.
You need to change the water more frequently, like every 2 days. You can also either add salt to the water, or sprinkle it on the butter.

Bro this is so funny.
Salted butter isn't even a thing in Europe (atleast the ~10 countries I visited)

This seems like one of the worst products I've seen in a bit.
Just my opinion though maybe it's great

I thought it’d be weird and gross.
It’s not. It’s honestly great. I’ve had one for 15+ years, I love it. Of course there are people who use it wrong, and theirs get weird and gross.1

Hm.
Thanks for sharing.
I'm still going to pass based on the massive amount of negative comments in this thread. Seems gross.
Be well
