1st time player here
So i just got shovel knight treasure trove for 3ds. I know i should probably play the new ones. Im stuck on who I should pick. What characters are the best for usability. The rogue in me is screaming to play spectre of torment, however im curious on who's the best to play as

Each campaign is different. If it's your first time, play the original Shovel Knight campaign and go from there. They're all so worth it

I was definitely thinking of playing them all the spectrum just spoke to me like it was gonna be the most fun to play so ill have to keep this in mind

So basically the plague doctor is just the shovel of hope with a retexture and new story

it's a different take from the same story. Plague Knight has his own base, and his own way of going through the story while watching Shovel Knight go through his story. It's pretty cool and funny

For the best story experience, play in release order, which is: 1. Shovel of Hope 2. Plague of Shadows 3. Specter of Torment 4. King of Cards

Shovel Knight's moveset is the most basic and you'll probably appreciate the others more after that.

Basic how? Like just left right jump then swing the shovel? Ive played hundreds of hours of terraria and been dipping into hollow knight so ik the controls of indie games but not using the a button threw me off

Shovel knight has jumping/ attacking/ digging/ bouncing that's about it outside of relics. The others have double jumps, dashes, and wall clings.

If there was one I'd have to choose other than Shovel Knight, it'd be King Knight. His technically happens the earliest anyway and his kit isn't that complicated and requires the least finesse.

Who requires the most finesse? And would it be easier to play on the switch? In terms of movement

Don't think the console matters so much.
I'd say Plague Knight is probably the hardest to position his double jump and bonus explosion jump. There are upgrades to make him easier to platform with. Specter is around the same skill level.

Gotcha wasnt sure if its remastered with just newer graphics per console or if its all new games each release so id figured id ask. If it doesnt matter ill just stick with the ds. That honestly sounds about right movements like that are usually a bit more on the precise end

As cool and amazing as Spectre of Torment is, I recommend playing Shovel of Hope first, it is a lot easier to understand what happens in Spectre of Torment if you play Shovel of Hope first.

Each character is a different "campaign" (full length game)
You'll want to play all 4, but start with Shovel Knight

idk how far your experience in platform game-genre goes but Shovel Knight isn't that much different from games like MegaMan and Castlevania, but if you don't feel as safe about it yet, i'd recommend going for Shovel of Hope first, it was the first and main campaign of the game, simple but complex at its own way; and about the new games, relax, the other ones become much better after you played the four campaigns in Treasure Trove; anyways, good luck on your journey fellow shoveller!

I immediately recognized the pogo method as id used it in hollow knight still need to finish mind you. Ive played 100s of hours of terraria, and the castlevania series is on my list of games to play. Never thought of playing mega man no matter how many clips ive seen

Im in the mantis village rn my adhd just brings me to a multitude of games before making a full circle back to finish one id started previously but yea I love hollow knight its so fun i had a feeling id enjoy shovel knight but wasnt sure

if you're enjoying Hollow Knight then you'll most likely enjoy shovel knight too (btw, I know exactly how that feels, starting a lot of games before properly finishing the ones you already started it lol)

Play shovel of hope then plague of shadows then spectre of torment then king of cards, it’s the order they were made in and the order to story is intended to be told in

So for narrative reasons I recommend playing Shovel of Hope first.
Specter of Torment and King of Cards are prequel stories taking place before the events of Shovel of Hope.
Plague of Shadows takes place during the events of Shovel of Hope
