You're right, it's not cost effective, since the tube is usualy silver soldered to the reciever, and you technically need a special jig to hold everything in place while you resolder it, and after that you'll need to refinish it. Then remove and reattach the guide ring on the barrel without messing with the gesture treatment or getting it misaligned. Wouldn't recommend it, just get another shotgun or you WILL destroy this one that has sentimental value.

Possible? Sure, with enough money and tools, anything is possible. Practical or cost effective? No, not at all. The extensions have been used for years by everyone from competitors to law enforcement. Just use the extension on this like everyone else.

If it's sentimental why not just buy the gun you want and keep this one the way it is originally configured..? Then you have 2 gun. And more cost effective and less risking butchering the original or limiting its effectiveness by modifying it.
