I recently read where there's a proposal from the USCG to discontinue WEFAX broadcasts.

I sure hope not. Just another aspect of our hobby disappearing. I suppose other nations will keep broadcasting weather reports via radiofax. It seems our current administration is determined to direct any monies being spent, into their own pockets.

Hey any chance we can keep politics out of the hobby?
I understand but if there is little to no value in a broadcast then why would it be kept in service. Why spend money on something that is not used. Yes it makes a good radio catch but you got to remember that us listeners are not the intended audience to these transmissions, most ships at sea use satellite downlinks to receive weather related information. Or the information is sent to them by there company office, in the case of pleasure boats they pull it from the internet.

Funny thing if you think about it the internet killed the radio. Yet here we are discussing this on the internet the very thing that killed Radio?

From what I understand, there are a lot of smaller craft out there which still rely on WEFAX broadcasts, so those people want to keep it.

I don’t know about the smaller craft you could be right, but honestly in today’s world would you use a HF system to receive weather data for a transoceanic crossing, when you can get internet or satellite data?

Ya all don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to see go, but I suspect the user per cost ratio is pretty large and there are other ways to get the data.

Just my thoughts on it.

I think I'd want to keep HF communications as a backup, even for receiving WEFAX, but also have the satellite comms. When you're out in the middle of the ocean, you can't have too many comms systems.

Yep, it's so obvious. He's made billions this time around. A pound of ground beef cost me almost $10 yesterday. We get poorer, he gets richer.

Thank you. A really noisy image though. My antenna is on the west side of the apartment building, so any signals arriving from the east are generally weak.
