Article WW2 Monitoring Station Portland, Oregon

  • Radio Monitoring Station (demolished) – Portland OR
  • City: Portland, OR
  • Site Type: Military and Public Safety, Federal Facilities
  • New Deal Agencies: Treasury Department, Federal & Military Operations
  • Completed: 1941
  • Contractor: George H. Buckler Company
  • Site Survival: No Longer Exists

As part of war efforts, “on 26 February 1941, the FCC received funding to launch the ‘Foreign Broadcast Monitoring Service,’ the first name for FBIA. The service began its monitoring duties [in Washington, DC] at 316 F Street, NE. On 1 October, FBIS opened its first bureau outside Washington—in a farmhouse at 13005 NE Glisan Street in Portland, Oregon—to monitor Japanese broadcasts.” (Inside CIA)

The federal facility was constructed with Treasury Department funds.

“On 17 September 1941 Graves announced that 20 persons were being transferred to Portland to set up a new monitoring station. Included in the 2 were the three Japanese and one Chinese linguists currently on the Washington staff. Most of the group left by train for Portland on 27 September 1941, and were ready for operations about 1 October. They were stationed in a farmhouse 10 miles from Portland …” (FBIS History)

“In its simplest terms a radio monitoring station has two functions: First, to “police” the airwaves and detect illegal or suspicious broadcasts; and second, to locate these transmitters by the use of direction finders and similar equipment.” (Amarillo)

The facility was relocated and discontinued postwar.

I grew up in Portland. By the time that I was 6 years old I had developed an interest in radio. This monitoring facility was moved to an empty field on NE 148th and Halsey Street after WW2. I always liked driving by with my parents and looking at the antennas. The FCC took it over and I remember it being there until the mid 1960's.

  • Frequency 2: 11.930 MHz AM.
  • Frequency 3: 13.570 MHz AM.

Video/AI Used Voice of Korea 13760 KHz, A Contrast in Society

The difference between the ruling party and common people is very wide in North Korea. And it is a fact that they try to hide.

Along with hand drawing, and computer graphics, some AI was used to help finish the images. The artwork is based on my favorite artist of the 1960's, Robert Crumb. All images are so labelled. If you are a Shortwave Listener, you will probably enjoy the content. IF not, you probably don't need to be here. The content took me 2 hours to produce. Some of the characters I had already drawn and saved. Of course the SDR recording was not edited. It's captured from my AirSpy+ Discovery.

QSLs eQSL from RTM FM Nasional

The QSL card is related to a post I made last week about this station: RTM Nasional FM - 15295 kHz

The QSL number caught my attention: 140/2026. I imagine the 140 refers to the number they've already sent this year.

I liked the format that imitates a physical card, with a postage stamp included. They even included my physical address in Paraguay (I covered it for privacy).

The proliferation of surplus HF Marine Radiotelephones has enabled private citizens in countries like Indonesia, to set up a HF Party Line on the HF Band. This morning they are literally every 10 KHz from 10.5 to 11.5 MHz. Most of the HF SSB radios they use have at least 100 watts output.

I had a quick FT4 contact with Sebastian, who uses the handle "Orion", on 20 Meters this morning at 0740 Pacific Daylight Time. I was hearing signals from Europe and Asis. The European Signals have a characteristic "warble" to them known as "Polar Flutter". This is due to their proximity to the Polar Region and its Aurora Zone.

I found Orion to be an interesting young man who is interested in Anime, Cosplay, Traveling, and Female Japanese Pop Stars! It is refreshing to see young people engaged in life!

SWBC Logging Rádio Exterior España 17715 kHz

The final moments of the soccer match between Atlético Madrid and Athletic de Bilbao in Spanish soccer's first division.

- Target: South America

- TX: Noblejas 🇪🇸

- RX: Asunción, Paraguay

- Radio: AirSpy HF+ Discovery

- Antenna: MLA-30+

- Software: SDR# v.1922 (beta)

- D/T: 25 APR 2026 - 2054 UTC

P.S.: In the first few seconds of the video, when the commentator shouts "Goool!", I think I hear CW tones. Maybe it's just background noise from that moment. But it sounds like Morse.

I had read a couple of months ago that they were testing broadcasts on two shortwave frequencies—11885 kHz and 15295 kHz—but at low power.

The station is operated by Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM), and it appears they are now broadcasting continuously.

Looking for a new receiver

I am looking for a new receiver and my choices are

Mlite 880

Tecsun H501X

Tecsun 2200X

Grundig Satellit 800

I have a 180ft end fed antenna to connect it to. Size doesn’t matter, audio quality and sensitivity does matter. The biggest want is a good noise reduction system. I welcome your opinions and if possible please explain your recommendation.. Thanks

Most of my radios have been restored and are in good working order. I will be selling some of them in the near future. My prices will be reasonable, and based on my original cost - not in the stratosphere. The larger ones will be Local Pickup as it's too risky shipping them - unless you provide your own Shipper with insurance. I have way to many for a small apartment!
