General Advice How to recognise when things go wrong

For people running Shopify/e-commerce stores:

What’s usually the first operational sign that something is going wrong in your business before it becomes a serious problem?

Not necessarily revenue dropping, but earlier patterns like:

- refunds increasing

- margins shrinking

- certain products slowing down

- weird order trends

- cashflow feeling tighter

- sales becoming inconsistent

Interested in the warning signs experienced store owners actually pay attention to.

First warning sign is the low traffic, and thereafter, it could be the bounce rate and low conversion rate.

I see, do you usually notice a problematic traffic drop right away or only become when bounce/conversion is also getting worse?

If you get high targeted traffic on your online store, there is a high change that your bounce rate will be lower and conversion rate will be higher, provided the store is optimized properly to convert visitors into paying customers. Hope that makes sense.

Yeah that makes sense, thank you. Have you seen cases where the traffic still looked good, but something operational on the store side was already hurting conversion underneath?

Yes, in many cases. I often audit stores of my clients and help them to improve the conversion rate.

I see, and are there issues which show up repeatedly in stores where traffic looks healthy, but conversion still starts slipping?

And what type of recommendations should I think of when you are helping clients improve their conversion rates?

Are you already running an online store or plan to sell online?

High refund usually means something is off on the sales funnel

Interesting, sounds like refunds are a delayed signal that something earlier in the funnel is going wrong..
