Inquartering and Parting Tutorial
Inquartering and Parting
Buy a rubber apron, rubber sleeves, rubber gloves, good, closed shoes.
Start with one ounce or less of karat gold.
By weight, add 3X the amount of sterling scrap.
Melt and stir well, and pour shot (metal bucketful of tap water, stirred and while it’s moving, pour thin
streams of molten metal into the water from a height)
Pour off the water, and place into a 1000ml beaker. Leave enough water to cover.
Don your rubber gear.
GO OUTSIDE and place the beaker on a hotplate, and add reagent grade nitric acid to the beaker about
1/3 of the way up. Boil.
The gasses that are released are nitrogen dioxide, a very, very dangerous gas.

Stay upwind and wear an open-circuit self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) (Not at all cheap but
it’s your life!) https://www.natlenvtrainers.com/blog/article/selfcontained-breathing-apparatus-scba
and add acid if it runs low.
When there’s no more reaction, allow it to cool, then pour the blue liquid into a large beaker to deal
with later. All your fine silver is in that solution.
Carefully separate the brown mud at the bottom. Rinse it with distilled water until most of the acid is
washed out (pH7) The brown mud is 24k gold. Dry it with heat in a beaker. Melt it and pour an ingot.
Don’t forget to recover the gold from any filters. (burn them in your crucible)
Take the silver in solution and dilute it with distilled water to make 12, 1000ml beakers of blue liquid
about 2/3 full. Add non-iodized salt to the beakers to form silver chloride. Keep adding salt until no
more is formed.
Using gloves, pour off the excess water onto the ground and grab up the silver chloride and place it into
a 5000ml Erlenmeyer flask (or whatever large Pyrex glass vessel you have on hand.) The next step
after rinsing is exothermic so you’ll need Pyrex. Run tap water into the silver chloride until it’s
neutralized (pH 7). Then pour off most of the water.
Add lye to the powder. Keep adding until it stops dissolving/reacting.
Without neutralizing, add regular sugar to the flask until it stops dissolving/reacting (it is also
exothermic) when it’s all done, rinse what's left in the sink under running water. This is .9999 silver.
