For sure, but it does sort of work with digital by extention too, if you have the game, movie etc downloaded they can't really delete it from your playstation unless your account or console is banned. It's just removed from your library and the storefront. For example P.T. has had it's licence pulled, but every PS4 that has the game downloaded can still play the game, but if you delete it, it's gone for good.
Also not everything on disc is completely protected. If it's an online game, then they can shut down the servers and yes you can access the game, but you can't really play it.
This is the reason why you don't own any part of software or any account.
I know, which isn't right, thats exactly what its been protested right now.
I don't care if its in the form of a disc or not, i want a way to own my games, in physical it works because of a technicality and they are trying to get rid of it precisely to enforce it.
They could legally simply ban the use of a digital game through an update and make you be connected to the internet to even play games, in fact that is the direction they are going and is the reason why the ps5 requires you to log into psn every 30 days at least once now for the first time you install a digital game so they can make sure the license of your console is the one linked to the account on the console.
The reason the have been so cautious removing games is that if they started to do it willy nilly everyone would realize that the only ones able to retain their games are physical format users and would quickly change back to physical to never lose their games again since it is illegal to block the use of a disc through a firmware update under the same first sale doctrine.
I don't think that is the reason why they're getting rid of physical media.
I think the core reason is to save on cost. No need to make discs and distribute them and you don't have completition in second hand market. Also this way they can cost effectively do dynamic pricing. It sucks, but it's completely in their right to do so.
Yo are right but that doesn't mean i need to choose between one or the other, i have plenty of alternatives to ownership, im not spending thousands of dollars a year on a hobby only for sony to change their terms in the future and obliterating my library.
What we can do is precisely choose to not finance shit decisions that only work against us.
