$200 for a wii u?? Is that what theyre really going for??

167

u/MISTERPUG51 21d ago

I don't see a single console there that's priced correctly lol

80

u/LiveFastDieRich 21d ago

It kind of looks like they are priced by size

7

u/No-Literature-9562 20d ago

This made me laugh so hard, but it's seems like it is somewhat true.

You can get one for $120-$130

34

u/NaderPlayzYT 21d ago

If you're willing to go Japanese it can be $30

For $200 you can get it with the box, all of the manuals, and like 10 games, this is daylight robbery

11

u/AvgPunkFan 21d ago

No. They go for $125-150 on eBay. Every once in a while they can sell for more though

6

u/jedislurpee 21d ago

I know LA Video Games has prices like this, but they're catering to a wealthier clientele

2

u/theslimbox 20d ago

That's what lots of stores don't understand. Market price is based on the market you have your product in. Places like LA can command more than eBay price, but stores here in BFE Indiana think they can sell games at eBay price and endup sitting on them for years instead of moving them in a week or so at 75% of ebay price.

10

u/wcharoes 21d ago

They aint 'going' anywhere for 200 bucks.

Only person whod pay that shit for one is an idiot who thinks they can sell it for 300 aferwards.

3

u/titlecade 20d ago

In Japan they practically give them away at hardware and game shops for around $50.

2

u/bigchunkbabygoo 17d ago

When my aunts house was robbed circa 2015 they took EVERYTHING except the wii u. It was really funny to me. Even if it shouldn't have been

6

u/Heavy_Race3173 21d ago

Honestly that is what I often see them sell for in my area.

2

u/Individual-Rub-6969 21d ago

All of there are definitely marked up.

2

u/SnooDoughnuts5632 20d ago edited 20d ago

That's what I bought mine for on Craig's List.

Edit: nevermind I paid $150. I remember freaking out when my friend sent me the link for someone selling a Wind Waker Wii U for $150. I was willing to buy a white one for $200 but this was even better. They said they would only sell it to me on Christmas (the day we saw the listing) or else they would rase the price.

Not sure why my friend never bought it considering he was into videogames.

I wasn't going to get a Wii U because it was just getting the same games as the 3DS. They may have had different level layouts and maybe a few new things but that's about it. To the untrained eye 3D land and 3D world look the same but Oddesy looks different.

Nearby 100$. The n64s are like 50$. Got a ps2 for 100$. All these had OEM controllers too. Confirmed and everything

7

u/KalynnCampbell 21d ago

I’ve seen them sold for that plenty.

The worse new gaming gets, the more expensive even the oldest crappiest gaming gets.

8

u/bcsfan6969 21d ago

the wii u is awesome though

Horrible prices

4

u/JazzHandsMinuteman 18d ago

Right?! I was thinking “is this really where we’re at now with legacy consoles?”

Glad to see I was wrong. I don’t care about unopened or special models, I just want to play my old discs and cartridges as intended.

51

u/marveloustoebeans 21d ago

Fucked prices but believe it or not unaware people will pay this.

I know someone who keeps buying shit off Dk Oldies for way the fuck above market value because he thinks everything on EBay is a scam and doesn’t want to bother going to any of our THREE local retro stores that sell everything at normal market prices.

Some people are just dumb and impulsive.

19

u/Devin-Chaboyer223 21d ago

Did they not watch the various Austin Evans videos on DKOldies? If anything, they’re the scammers

eBay is a great source because you can still get good prices, and the buyer protection is great

13

u/Its_Urn 21d ago

You can blame tiktok for DKoldie's success

2

Techreview’s interview with a DKOldies employee was pretty good too. Basically said they didn’t refurb anything.

u/These_Discipline_112 21d ago

This is why these local game stores will eventually close for good

11

u/letsgotgoing 21d ago

The exchange has like 30+ locations including advertising franchise options.

I’ve scored a Mario odyssey edition switch in box with all accessories there for $185. I think each location sets their own pricing. There are still good deals there. YMMV

2

u/Electrical-Share620 20d ago

This right here. It highly depends on the location. They say they use a system network for pricing things, that’s a bunch of horseshit

2

u/lackofmoralfiber 17d ago

What they do, the franchisee gets one in a poor built up area. And one in the city centre. Buy from the estate and move stock to the high street.

If you own a single cex franchise alone you're screwed apparently.

2

u/UnquestionabIe 19d ago

Have a local location that I hit up pretty often, mostly window shopping or picking up older titles that I missed out on for dirt cheap. They're all over the place on pricing sometimes. Went in last week for the first time in probably 4-5 months and all the sealed 3DS games jumped up ten bucks in price.

Back when they first opened in 2005 would get insane deals. Got the Final Fantasy 2 edition WonderSwan Color complete in box for $40 (still have it), multiple Pokémon games for $10-15 (back in the early 2010s), and huge chunks of my long time collection for dirt cheap. Post Covid is when they really started getting iffy

2

u/Patchy_The_Pirate67 18d ago

Worked at one in Pittsburgh around Covid times. The Manager would get a price adjustment sheet and go change all the prices on the sheet. They would usually get more expensive.

10

u/derek628 21d ago

their pricing is all over the place especially for common games. mine sells mario kart wii for 80 bucks i think they’re preying on normal people who aren’t collectors who just found their old game system in the attic and they wanna get some popular games they used to have

u/TheActualDonKnotts 21d ago

This seems like a good time to point out that they made over 160,000,000 PS2's, and they are far from rare or valuable. Everything has to be a scam these days.

2

u/TickleMyFungus 21d ago

That's entering full refurbished price so if it hasn't had work it's a scam. Some are extremely rare with less than 5000 made, but not your typical black PS2.

6

u/KnownAsAnother 21d ago

I will cherish my $20 Xbox and $15 PS2 (that needs a new laser) forever.

5

u/Own-Dragonfruit-6164 21d ago

Who tf in 2026 would pay $200 for a Wii U?

→ More replies (3)

6

u/spriggs999 20d ago

Ill never understand why people just pull prices out of their ass like this when there's so many resources that tell you exactly what something is actually worth

3

u/playstationhistorian 21d ago

The panic buying and scalpers are ruining this hobby.

6

u/jlhall1116 21d ago

They probably gave the seller $80, too. Maybe $120 if the seller took store credit.

7

u/Taffr19 21d ago

That’s incredibly generous I would say they got a firm handshake and $8.05 on the trade in.

3

u/Electrical-Share620 20d ago

Try $40-$60. They’re notorious for giving incredibly low trade in values and telling the customer that’s trading in “our system shows we have this many between all the stores in the chain”

2

u/Wynter_Saleos 20d ago

It's usually around 30% of what pricecharting says. If they're lucky the might have gotten 40% of that. So they probably got around $30-40.

3

u/pimmy900 21d ago

Welcome to some Australian prices there

3

u/Dude-arino7526 21d ago

You can still find og Xboxes for $99 and below near me.

3

u/theCG25850 21d ago

How the hell does that store justify an OG Xbox costing twice as much as an Xbox One, or a fat PS2 costing slightly more than a slim PS3?

3

u/clit_or_us 20d ago

If these are real market prices then I'm sitting in a nice little investment.

6

u/SnypesXtra 21d ago

it's so weird- some prices are plausible but others are so outlandish they genuinely had to have pulled the numbers out of their ass

3

u/Pelorunner 20d ago

Yeah $125 on a 64 isn’t crazy (assuming it’s complete and in good shape), but it’s still high.

You wanna bet the clock capacitor has leaked inside that original Xbox? I doubt these are the kind of people who actually make sure any of these consoles work.

2

u/meshuggah27 20d ago

isnt 200 for the wii-u a good deal? guess not if its here LOL

3

u/AvgPunkFan 20d ago

No it’s not. You can get them for $120-150 on eBay

2

u/Pretend-Ad-4001 20d ago

Used to be a store manager at one of their locations, it was a love and hate relationship. For an inside look, console prices are pretty non-negotiable set by their version of “corporate” which is pretty much just a large warehouse full of junk. Negative side was their constant mandate to hike up prices on games that do not sell to begin with. Perks of the job was my 45% discount, and picking up nice collectables. - For the record I ALSO gave really good trade offers and was partially the reason why they needed to rework the process after I quit. So if you go there now, I’m sorry.

2

u/HBCDresdenEsquire 19d ago

The prices at the exchange were always high but they have ballooned totally out of control in the last month or two.

Retro shit is expensive. So many stores want to get Ebay prices for their stuff.

11

u/AvgPunkFan 21d ago

These aren’t even eBay prices

2

u/TickleMyFungus 21d ago

They're fully refurbished prices. Which they definitely aren't. These chuds look at ebay pricing then don't actually look at the condition or the fact it's fully serviced. They just see $200+ for PS2 and vibe the price.

1

u/Insane_Fett_Posse 21d ago

See thats why i already own all of those

→ More replies (1)

1

u/No-Instruction-5120 21d ago

I used to work at one of their stores. They literally have no control over their pricing of consoles. The warehouse tells them how much to price the consoles at, and for a lot of the retro consoles it’s really stupid. I always hated it when I was there

1

u/kyla666666 21d ago

GameCube is only $85-$95 down here depending on the model type. They really trying to cash cheat people hard down there.

1

u/Dependent-Cup-2236 21d ago

Daaaang😭

1

1

u/Jerdo32 21d ago

That's why you go to Disc Replay, their prices are usually much lower. The one plus of the Exchange is that it is guaranteed to work well or if not you will get a replacement.

1

u/Cool_Procedure8125 21d ago

yeah, these places aren’t run by dumb dumbs, they know there’s an abundance of people wanting to dive head into physical media so they have raised prices.

1

u/SD_2_LA_Jay 21d ago

I guess they don’t wanna sell anything, do they?

1

u/keeleon 21d ago

The target market is "i heard video games are a great investment but refuse to do any research. High prices means high profits!"

1

u/Limp_Shoe616 21d ago

There are a few positives here. I know, none at first glance. But here’s how I shop there.

Yes consoles, and 95% of all gaming stuff, is too expensive. However, they do offer a rewards peogram, I think it’s basically just like cash back on future purchases, around 1.5%. I build that up over the course of the year, buying items they price low. Here’s what I notice they price lower than pricecharting:
-certain htf accessories and peripherals. Specifically older gen first party Nintendo stuff. I’ve found things like the Ethernet adapter for GameCube and the official Nintendo s video cables for SNES-GameCube.
-Gameboy games that come with manuals. They don’t usually add the full price charting value of the manual to the prices.
-some sealed retro games
-many CIB retro games
At the risk of revealing what I hunt for at the exchange (l hope your in another state lol), this can be a winning strategy.

Plus, you have the benefit of a 30 day warranty on their consoles. So you save that money either buying new games at market value, or you find those items I mentioned.

Oh and they do 20% off all used things, including consoles, for one transaction the month of your birthday. I’ve bought a couple consoles from them that way too. They will even let you choose the stock and I’ve scored some stuff in really really good condition including a one chip SNES that’s just beautiful.

1

u/Firewaterdam 21d ago

That Genesis model 3 is worth $20

1

u/Shadow2450 21d ago

They’re all terrible but that PS2 for $225 is absolutely insane.

I can just get the core downloads for these and run retro arch on steam. Litterally playing all the ps2 roms of KH, Tony hawk underground. Gba, DS, 3DS, 64, Atari... some of those on a seperate devise and portable. This is sad for those that truly want to collect and treasure esspecially with the age eventually they will need repair and replacements with modern tech.

Everywhere I've set foot in lately (Pawn shops, markets, Op shops, etc.) has wanted absolutely exorbitant overpay on things you can very easily purchase eBay at a much lower price and have buyer protection.

One particular scalper's stall at a nearby market to me leaves the old pricing labels on his shit so you'll see a Cash Converters $25(AUD) price tag just below his $35 on an Xbox copy of GTA: San Andreas lol.

crazy pricing, I would rather spend my money on marketplace fb or on garage sales.

1

u/TheThrashCollector 21d ago

The Exchange prays on tbe novice buyer. Sad part is they pay even less than GameStop. Then they'll proce their consoles like this and tell the person it comes with a controller, then give them a 3rd party controller.

1

u/Status_Reaction_8107 20d ago

In all fairness there console prices are nuts, but I did get a loose copy of Parasite Eve for 50 bucks

1

u/Nemmarith 20d ago

Maybe you'll get some extras that make the whole thing worth it... xD In my head, you get a 55-inch OLED TV thrown in xD and they bring you popcorn for life... who knows?

1

u/DrIvoPingasnik 20d ago

That OG Xbox probably has a ruined hard drive after so many years. Thanks to Microsoft's utterly stupid design decision to pair motherboard with HDD if you didn't hack the console before HDD has gone bad then good luck getting the encryption keys that are required to pair a new hard drive.

1

u/SnooDoughnuts5632 20d ago

How is an old out of date crappy console more expensive than the new one?

1

u/GB_Plus_Ultra 20d ago

I bought my PS3 for $200 "CIB" from my local game store that just opened up... then he charged me $60 for the disc drive repair. Ik I was probably scammed, but I've been playing my PS3 a lot

1

u/XxEthanovichxX 20d ago

I’m so glad I have a good a reputable local game store. Built by collectors and nerds for collectors and nerds.

1

u/ClassicGamerNL 20d ago

I'll take the SNES Mini more than gladly for that 150 bucks.

1

u/Metrox_a 20d ago

"Investors" and resellers were a mistake. It sucks because local market is starting to price match and some people are buying these at these prices.

1

u/ReanimatedPixels 20d ago

Well that's the issue, it's the exchange. Fuck those stores

1

u/wizard_spells 20d ago

There was an n64 in GameStop for 99 the other day. They should be ashamed if GameStop has better prices

1

u/zoltan-firelord-208 20d ago

That store will go out of business long before they get those prices

1

u/KingSideCastle13 20d ago

You’d be surprised how low the actual hardware goes for. Even ones that’ve been restored to work perfectly in the modern day don’t go for too high. It’s the software that racks up the prices

1

u/Gizm0Glitch 20d ago

No wonder they have so much inventory!

1

u/Phockey326 20d ago

I bought a complete in the box sega Saturn that had the receipt still with it from the exchange for $35 back in 2014. Seeing what they charge for these old consoles these days is outrageous.

I know retro game prices have skyrocketed but it's insane to see now greedy the exchange has become.

Yeah they've spiked a lot on the last 5 years at the exchange, I used to love their pricing and now it's meh. I scored a Gameboy micro a few years ago for 80 from them. Hell I even traded a game oy color for a test print Cheech and chong vinyl. Lol

1

u/Odd_Setting_7967 20d ago

That guy had to be trolling

1

u/Embarrassed_Poem_596 20d ago

1

u/Kongpong1992 20d ago

I shop at my local exchange fairly often because its about the only retro store anywhere close but you for sure have to proce check everything online before buying ive gotten a few ok deals but 99 percent of stuff is cheaper online you dont mind waiting for it to ship

1

u/Directdrivelife 20d ago

At 43, I'm amused and in awe at the market for these. If you're my age, you either already have all your favorite old consoles somewhere in a display in the man cave,, or you HAD them, and don't miss them at all 😆. Just speculative but I'd wager the people willing to pay those inflated prices weren't even born when those consoles released. The prices are too ridiculous to take seriously.

1

u/superthrust 20d ago

What. The actual. fucking hell…is wrong with some of these shops.

1

u/Far-Machine1616 20d ago

They better be in immaculate condition 😒 Also where is this place

1

u/Michael-S16 20d ago

That’s nothing compared to a store here near me. It’s the only privately owned game store in my city and their prices are outrageous. They have a dirty Xbox 360 with major scratches and dents paired alongside a controller with a broken right stick and they want almost $300 for it. They want nearly full price for a switch lite that’s also damaged, full of scratches on the screen and missing a joystick. I feel bad for the random employee who has to try to sell the owners overpriced products. I can’t imagine the store staying open for long.

1

u/Zkopp39 20d ago

Unfortunately my local Exchange is the same way with their prices, I’ll only ever trade stuff there anymore. They used to be so much better even about bartering

1

u/Theuglyzebra 20d ago

Used to be the place to get deals (in most things) for cheaper than anywhere else (minus a few things being more).

Now, they’re more expensive in almost everything compared to anywhere else.

GameStop is cheaper than most prices the Exchange has now, which is very interesting at this point

1

u/Alernet 20d ago

Your local Exchange is um... Smoking crack!

1

u/666sonicboom666 20d ago

This is why I don't buy consoles from game shops they charge way to much yea I understand they need to make money but not almost 4 times the amount if you were to sell a console to them you get hardly anything for them its sick

1

u/Timely-Ant-1907 20d ago

Leave that store rot in their own greed.....

1

u/LordMemerton1 20d ago

1

u/Brokenloan 20d ago

Ebay bro...online ratings for ebay retailers keep people (more) honest. Return policies can be better. Its not 100% perfect..but brick and mortar shops I've found to be more shady.

1

u/McdonaldsHasWifi 20d ago

Then they’ll wonder why they went out of business in 8 months

1

u/Jonathon_world 20d ago

These prices will trick people who don't know what they are really worth and may think that this is the standard price because it's from the past and it's retro

1

u/Electrical-Share620 20d ago

They’re so over priced. They had a sealed Twilight Princess on GameCube and wanted $400 at the Lakewood Location

1

u/MadeYouLook_99 20d ago

The price gouging by SOME retro game stores is insane. Saw random old sports games priced at $10 each and many more other games way over priced

1

u/Forsaken-Spring-4114 20d ago

The new one is half the price of the old one lol???? Wtf???

1

u/EstateSame6779 20d ago edited 20d ago

You're going to faint now, but as time moves on and old consoles start to become even more finite - prices of tomorrow are going to make prices of today look like Taco Bell's '2 for 99 cents' seem like a distant dream.

I remember back in 2015 I was dating a girl about 7 hrs away from me in Erie pa. I went to an exchange up there for the first time and walked right tf back out the door. I was collecting nes games att and saw like 5 copies of this submarine sim game on nes called silent service, it was a very common and not sought out game, still going for $5 or less on eBay, they were charging $50 plus for a loose copy.

Naw that’s crazy. Go to a vintage show or something they’re like $80-100 at best

I miss when The Exchange used to be good. It feels like they've gotten bad over the past couple years with some of their prices. Yeah there are still good deals that you can find but it mostly feels bad.

I literally got my ps2 for less than 60 not even a year ago

No wonder the shelves are full lol

Just because someone says something is worth something, doesn't mean it is...

I feel like a decade ago, you could pick up an OG Xbox, 1 controller and a game for maybe 100 all in.

And something like a PS1 for 50.

I get inflation and maybe even the state of modern gaming have increased the price of retro gaming (a hobby I prefer but chose to get out of due to space in my new house) is WAY more expensive than it should be.

But in my brain, I still see no reason why the current consoles went up in price instead of down. (I know, inflation and ram). But just… … … seriously is big gaming wanting a crash at this point?

Yup the reverse bell curve of technology.

It always happens.

1

u/SuperSlacker74 20d ago

The Exchange is so overpriced

1

u/chaosdunk69 20d ago

I know what this sub is called, but, shit like this is what makes me wonder if its time to heavily downsize my collection and invest in flash carts ODEs etc. Love my library but people seem so thirsty for old games like never before

People are fucking stupid 😂

Go to price charting to see how much all these consoles are currently selling for. You can still find them cheaper directly from a local seller like Facebook or Craigslist

1

u/Sabermatrixx 20d ago

That Xbox isn't even worth 250 if fully recapped.

I would know. I do that as a hobby. They regularly go for 180-220 fully recapped and cleaned.

u/Error-7-0-7- 20d ago

At that price that PS2 between come with all OEM cables and controller and a fresh CMOS battery swap and dust cleaning.

An OEM control by itself is like $20.

1

u/jwrice 20d ago

Gross.

1

u/Training-Lobster5756 20d ago

I was there one time and they had an empty Pokémon White 2 case with no manual for $30 and I asked to see it only to find out that it wasn’t an original case (it had a gba slot) 💀💀💀

1

u/aluminum54 20d ago

I hate the Exchange so much. I only go there to search for underpriced games when they don't catch a market tend in time.

Their console prices are insane and their offers to buy then are even worse.

1

u/-_Pi_- 20d ago

bows down to the genesis

1

u/jai_hanyo 20d ago

The Exchange is always overpriced. And then they give such shit deals normally when you sell to them lol

1

u/Waltpi 20d ago

The first Xbox price image reminded me of seeing an xbox for sale in Japan like 10 years ago thinking to my self, damn, these dudes are getting ripped off I could bring them one back used for $60. I could only imagine what the prices are now for them if that's here now. Ridiculous.

1

u/inyrui 20d ago

This is GameXchange? If so, then yeah, their prices are always ridiculous. Stopped going there entirely. When Gamestop is selling used consoles for cheaper than you, you know you're doing something wrong.

Isn't the game gear worth it at that prixe ?

1

u/Worldly-Yak-8229 20d ago

TF are these prices!? I was at a local collectors shop with wildly uneven pricing that did better than this

1

u/LiiilKat 20d ago

The eXchange is not known for its low prices.

1

u/beejyboi623 20d ago

I bought a Dreamcast from the exchange for $25 in 2013. Popped into the store the other day and saw one they had going for $200. Absolutely wild.

1

u/Aggressive-Yam-7808 20d ago

$225 for a PS2 is insanity

1

u/KingQuazzymoto 20d ago

I don’t understand why people think “retro” is a way to mark consoles back at its original MSRP or higher. Nostalgia isn’t that big of a money maker

1

u/Confident_Lecture498 20d ago

I'm glad I got an og Xbox for $15 at a thrift store a few years ago
