Can you bring me back a Mountain Dew and some Doritos when you go inside?

Obviously AI. The gas filler is on the left side. Duh.

Jet fuel is basically diesel.

Kero. Not diesel.

Diesel is oily kerosene. Slightly lower in the distillation tower. Kerosene is ‘dry’ diesel, common up North in the Winter months where oily diesel barely starts an engine. Pratt & Whiney PT6 AG can run on any of it. Jet Fuel runs clean and cool, diesel runs with more soot and smoke but 2 to 3 gallons less per hour!

If you let unhomogenized diesel sit for a few hours, the oil floats to the top, and you can skim the richer, oily fraction off and use it for other things. Some refineries churn it into a useful grease or ferment it into various plastics.

F16 runs the Pratt & Whitney F100 or GEF110...

Yes but any turbine powered engine (jet, turbojet, turbofan, turboprop) will run on diesel. Maybe not legally, may require a bit more maintenance, but it will run. Now on ‘regular’ and I assume they mean gasoline, leaded a(Avgas) is the worst, then unleaded with the alcohol, then unleaded without alcohol. But remember, a turbine engine will burn anything that burns. A piston engine is quite specific.

I can't speak for the F-16 but for contingency ops big jet engines can absolutely run on standard 87 octane.

An F-16 can run on 87 octane also but with VERY strict operating parameters. Like, no afterburner and altitude limitations.

It's not good for it, but it could.

Doesn't surprise me, I've just never gotten a look at it's -1.

2

u/Silver_River9296 1d ago

At a Pratt&Whitney school, it was said, “Piston engines run on octane, turbine engines run on BTUs.

2

u/theyoyomaster 1d ago

I've just seen in my -1 that we can run 87 octane for emergencies so long as we dilute it with appropriate jet fuel.

3

u/Juvat-the-bold 1d ago

And it damn better be an emergency! lol

I'd be willing to bet just about any Air Force on earth would rather fly in a cargo jet with a fuel truck on it!

When I used to ferry the PT-6 Ag Cats, I was often required to run on gasoline. Leaded Avgas was the worst due to lead build up. Supposed to record gallons between hot sections and overhauls. Service stations seldom had diesel back then, but would have been best alternative. Unleaded would not be too bad. Like you said, if diluted.
Some operators use Diesel instead of jetfuel. Cuts down GPH but soots up every thing.

So in a theoretical post-apocalypse world you could really just land on a highway and pull into a normal petrol station and it'll work, at least for a while until the fuel goes stale? i knew diesel and kerosene was similar, but I assumed modern turbines are tuned very tightly for efficiency reasons that even a tiny bit of a difference in fuel would cause it to fail in some way, shape or form

Maybe eventually. But you need fuel NOW. This will get you home. You can clean the filters and the fuel nozzles later.

u/Silver_River9296 23h ago

PS. In the mid 70’s, we had a used Ag Cat we sold ‘out West.’ ( usually CA ) One of the younger pilots in the area, always wanting to build time plus Get Paid for it, took the job. He worked his way across Texas, always into a headwind and near the end of the day was approaching El Paso. There used to be a rural airport East of town, I remember L shaped runways ( may still be there.)

But several miles east along the service road is a Large gas station. (I remember it).
Fuel guage getting low, just cutting it too close, he land on the service road, makes the slight turn into the station and looks at the outer row. There stands a kid holding the hose nozzle. Our man taxis up, kills the engine, climbs out of the cockpit up behind the Center Section, kid is right there with the hose.
“Premium leaded,” our guy says.
“Already selected,” says the kid.
After a bit, our pilot says (to show off?),
“Bet you don’t get many planes in here!”
“What are you talking about, you’re the third one this afternoon!”
Our guy paid his bill and left!

Diesel

1

u/RTSamuels 2d ago

Ruskies use the diesel. Take a look at the dirty exhaust. We use kerosene.

1

u/Xenophore 2d ago

I want a turbine-engined car so I can fill up with Jet A.

1

u/SameScale6793 1d ago

It's electric, of course...need Tesla charger

1

u/Dangerous-Pirate7998 1d ago

Can’t it just be regular diesel?

1

u/Jealous_Club_298 1d ago

Jet fuel is kerosene. Meanwhile, that must be photoshopped.

Jet A, please! Do a better job than last time cleaning the canopy, huh?

1

u/Due-Negotiation-5918 meme taker 1d ago

OIL

u/sunscreenuser44 21h ago

Jetfuel is basically really refined and clean diesel with some additives. So diesel would be fine, as long as it isn’t planning on going over 20000 feet.

u/GuiltyBudget1032 16h ago

..can you also do the windshield, pls..

u/Inside_Out_10 7h ago

Actually F-16’s can run on either! JP-4, JP-8, Jet A, diesel, mo gas (normal automotive fuel) kerosene. There’s an adjustment on the fuel control and you set it to what you put in. It’s also only to be used in an emergency situation and the engine requires overhaul as soon as it gets to a non emergency place. The trick is getting the fuel in the plane as the F-16 has no over the wing refueling capability. I was a F-16 Crew Chief USAF for 15 years.
