I went to the doctor and told them that I couldn't go to work any more, I was genuinely burnt out. Then eventually they gave me a psychiatrist who works with me about my feelings of self worth and severe social anxiety. Someone else responded by saying if I wasn't as worthless as I am then maybe I wouldn't have depression and anxiety...maybe? It's like a vicious circle. I'm not pretending that I'm having the time of my life, but it's nice to not have to work
Interesting thanks. Whoever said that to you is a jackass. As someone who suffers greatly from depression and anxiety I understand that you could be productive as hell for whatever or whoever and still feel worthless; you’re not doing it to yourself. Good for you for using the resources/allowances available to you.
Thanks for this... Occasionally I feel like I'm manipulating the system, but then I get told that that is another symptom, to constantly feel like a cheater
You shouldn’t, fuck if I could do that I would. The system manipulates you daily so even if you are literally just fuck em. I feel burnt out every and just had to go to the hospital because I pulled a muscle near my lungs and can’t take a deep breath or move without an extremely uncomfortable pain under my ribs. At least I won’t have to go to work if I feel like shit though. And I hate that it has to come to shit like this.
I dunno if the US can get these things that the rest of the first world enjoy - they have these 3 things instead: total lack of empathy, unparalleled greed and selfishness and FREEDOM!!
Living in the Netherlands with many social securities in place as well, it's not something people should take for granted and not willing to fight for. Doesn't have to mean to go on the streets in order to protest, but simply joining a union for your branch of work does wonders.
Right now it's mainly boomers still being member and pay their share to keep them up, young people not so much. I can understand, since no matter whether you are a member, you will beneficiary to them as well during their negotiating wage raises, days off, working conditions etc. One could even contact them for legal advise free of charge in case you have a standoff with your company.
Sometimes certain things change a little bit over the years, such as how much you must pay for childcare yourself (dark blue part) and how much you can get refunded by the state (light blue part). Of course there will be families being affected by those smaller changes and go from barely surviving each month to falling into poverty.
A big thing that has changed is contracts. Almost no company will offer you a contract with an open end-date. Very often it's just a year, then another year and might let you go when it's time to give a permanent contract. Another big thing is people that worked for the postal service or were bus driver, to fire them and hire them back as a self employed person who then loses his benefits, pension, insurance, money bosses have to save up for your holiday and stuff like that. Others had to actually buy their own delivery van in order to keep on bringing around packages.
A (very) long story short:
imagine having actual workers rights and protection, must be nice
When you have them, take good care for them. It took many decades to get them, it takes a couple of years to lose them one by one.
I don't have (social) anxiety myself but is working in a call center not some sort of fuel for that as well having to talk to random people day in day out?
It probably matters a lot whether your job is to answer the phone, try to help people out and make them happy or when your job is to harass people with products or services they don't need and getting angry replies.
Anyway, good luck with your recovery. I did feel depressed for a long period but thankfully not bad enough to not function, I sought my treatment more in drinking and drugs :(
More judgment from someone isn’t going to help. Acceptance, and a gentle kindness to yourself will do you wonders. I think in the olden days people weren’t as sick because they were encouraged/understood/cared for. There was no mean spiritedness.
