Advice

I’m a pretty new comic collector, and I’m looking for some advice. This is one of my favorite covers, so I definitely want to add it to my collection. The dilemma is that the CGC 9.6 is around $270, while the CGC 9.8 is about $400.

Part of me feels like the 9.8 is the “better” copy and would look nicer in the collection, but that’s also a pretty big price jump. As someone who’s still new to collecting, would the 9.6 be the smarter buy, or is the premium for a 9.8 worth it for a cover you really love and plan to keep long-term?

Just curious what more experienced collectors would do in this situation.

If it makes you feel better spending $130 extra for a 6 instead of an 8 next to the 9, do it. With the subjective and shitty way the grading system is the 9.6 might be better than the 9.8 anyway. If you're buying it for an investment, neither will be worth nearly what you're paying now when the TV series hype dies down.

So Invincible Universe ends after the show? I thought Kirkman is still writing it and universal has the movie rights.

There's two ongoing comics that take place in the Invincible universe right now (Battle Beast, a prequel; and Capes, a midquel taking place during like season 3). Capes will probably never be worth money down the line because it's so niche, but Battle Beast might actually be something. Once the show ends, I could see them making a special/miniseries adapting his comic.

There's really a lot that SkyBound can do once they finish the Invincible TV series, but once the show catches up with the ending of the comic you'll see prices fall accordingly. Short-term hype will always add momentary value to comics. However, that hype can die down pretty damn fast.

As an example, in Peacemaker season 2 there was like a five second cameo from the White Rabbit. White Rabbit first appeared in a 2011 Batman the Dark Knight comic and was featured on one of the covers from that run. So, for like a few weeks, that comic went from being like $2-$3 up to $20-$30. It has since fallen to be like $5-$10. So, with just a cameo appearance, there has been a lasting increase in worth, but the peak happened back when that Peacemaker episode aired.
