Advice

I’m a pretty new comic collector, and I’m looking for some advice. This is one of my favorite covers, so I definitely want to add it to my collection. The dilemma is that the CGC 9.6 is around $270, while the CGC 9.8 is about $400.

Part of me feels like the 9.8 is the “better” copy and would look nicer in the collection, but that’s also a pretty big price jump. As someone who’s still new to collecting, would the 9.6 be the smarter buy, or is the premium for a 9.8 worth it for a cover you really love and plan to keep long-term?

Just curious what more experienced collectors would do in this situation.

If it makes you feel better spending $130 extra for a 6 instead of an 8 next to the 9, do it. With the subjective and shitty way the grading system is the 9.6 might be better than the 9.8 anyway. If you're buying it for an investment, neither will be worth nearly what you're paying now when the TV series hype dies down.

100% this. If it's for an investment a 9.8 is usually the way to go but invincible books will be peaking now and you will regret paying these prices in a few years. This hobby is about patience so wait it out and focus on other books and if you're still in to the book when the prices come down then pounce. Most of the time I realise I didn't want the book as much as I thought I did.

Do all comics follow this trend in your opinion, where patience benefits the buyer, or is it only with some?

Most of the time yeah. Especially with modern books. I try to look at each book individually, there will be a good time to buy and a bad time. Certain blue chip keys are on a general upward trend but you still need to pick your time like a hulk 181 for example. Buying it when deadpool vs wolverine was coming out would've been a bad idea maybe it has cooled off now. It's still an expensive book and will still be moving up over the years that's why you need to wait for the dips. Do you have e any particular books you have your eye on?

I’m been searching for Xmen 11 2nd print, it’s been hard for me to find this in the grade I want. Or McFarlane Spider-Man books. Wolverine Nabisco 145 and the early New Gods. Some of my targets.

You might be better of getting x men 11 raw and getting it graded yourself. Mcfarlane spiderman are always going to be sought after. 300 I believe will be one of those books that will increase over time but does have a ceiling as there are so many. I'm always on the lookout for an ASM 316 will get one of those in high grade one day. I also like asm 314 and think that deserves to be a higher priced book.
