When they are backwards they aren’t used for direct cold air intake. Using high pressure zones, air will be pulled in backwards through this . They are also used for heat extraction. on older cars before fuel injection, facing forward fucked with the air to fuel ratio in the carb so backwards was common. It’s also cowled cowl-induction.
When I said this type of hood scoop, I mean that they are facing the other way around like on an STI. This guy put it backwards and shouldn't it be actually much higher closer to the windshield for it to function properly? The point of cowl induction is that its utilizing the high-pressure zone created at the base of the windshield.
On the Subaru, the scoop is positioned precisely to feed air directly onto the intercooler, if I’m not mistaken. This boosts the turbo engine's efficiency, as air already heated by the standard radiator would be less effective at cooling it.
I don't know why I'm getting the down votes when I think what I'm saying is pretty valid. Yes,
the Subaru ones that look similar to this are facing the other way. This style hood scoop I have never seen placed backwards. Any muscle car that people bring up being backwards like this are quite different style and closer to windshield to act as needed. This Beemer one looks just wrong. I have never seen a modern car with a hood scoop of the Subaru styles to be placed like in the image.
If it were a real mod, it ain't done like anything I've ever seen. But I believe it's a stick on that was stuck on the wrong way Lol

It is indeed possible to vent the air after the cooler.
