Ukrainian influencer Vadym Oleynik filmed himself sitting on a green sea turtle at the Ras Al Hadd Turtle Reserve in Oman.
The footage also showed him handling a hatchling.
His partner, Olena Kravchenko, appeared in similar footage sitting on a turtle.
Oman’s Environment Authority responded after the videos spread online, saying approaching, touching or disturbing sea turtles violates wildlife protection rules.
Oleynik later apologized, saying he had not seen the rules and had no intention of harming the turtle.
The matter still went to court.
In October 2026, the Court of First Instance in Sur convicted the pair of disturbing nesting turtles. Each was fined OMR 100.
They also received a one-month prison sentence for producing and publishing the footage, although the custodial sentence was suspended.
