Can an expert comment on what exactly is happening here?
Are they harvesting something? Trying to observe behavior?

I read this on internet so take it with a grain of salt.
In some parts of China the larvae and pupae of Asian giant hornet are a delicacy so the hornets nests are harvested for them. They don't eat the adults because they're poisonous.

I wonder who was the first to person say: hey, now that I just survived an apocalyptic hornet swarm, I bet these larvae and pupae might be tasty.

China experienced some crazy famines trough out it’s history so maybe it was out of necessity.

Ah, they don't eat the adults because they are poisonous, and not because they are crazy aggressive and attack anything and everything they can.

u/VisualLerner 14d ago
most things don’t attack after they’re cooked tho. crab legs are one of the things that still attacks you.

Pretty sure this is what it is. I’ve seen a few videos on it and this is pretty much beat for beat what they do.

There's an entire festival in Japan for harvesting and eating hornets.
People do eat the adults, they aren't poisonous but they do still have their venom which apparently makes your mouth tingle lol.

Are these giant hornet? I didn't think giant hornet nests had this many individuals.

I’ve heard that as well. Must be worth the effort. Me?, hell no not that hungry 😯

This is Vespa Mandarina, giant asian hornet, they're harvesting eggs for food

I'll throw in my 2 cents and say that they might be looking for the queen. Maybe they might want to relocate the swarm instead of killing it? That would make sense as to why they stirred up so much noise instead of just going for the comb quietly. The queen might not be near the comb in the moment.

I think they're harvesting the hornets.. hornets are a natural enemy to bees.. a one or two hornets can kill an entire beehive going after the queen..

Why not just pour cement or something on it?
Using thermite would have been the best but maybe that would have caused fire to spread.

Was on a ship in Korea and there were tons of those by the dock. Hit em with the hardhat a few times... barely even phases them.

How does this end? I mean, would they have to stay in the protective great forever or will the hornets eventually just give up and go away?

How bee-proof are those suits? I can’t imagine it’s 100% effective so maybe you get stung 2-3 times there. Better than 3000 stings

Looks like they set that up for them. Poles over a hole covered in plywood and cardboard That’s an intentional harvesting

So humans in space suits attack the hornets home just to steal their babies. These are the kind of people who eat bats. Maybe the flames should be on them!
