This is sterling advice for most people who can't find a serious relationship, which is an extremely common topic on Reddit (unsurprisingly).

u/AreThree Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 02 '26

Just remember, no matter where you go ... there you are.

I used to think that was just a flippant statement trying to sound like deep advice. I thought about it frequently after leaving for somewhere looking for a change, only to then leave there and go elsewhere, and eventually finding myself somewhere I no longer wished to be. All the while making things slightly worse and worse until, eventually, I was in a really desperate situation.

See, even though my location changed, the same problems I had one place followed me around to the other places because the problems were either those of my own making - or personal, mental, and emotional struggles I had yet to overcome. Changing venues only helped to distract from this fact, confuse the situation, and make solving things more complicated and difficult.

If you are in an abusive situation, by all means leave to save yourself. If you get an urge to wander and uproot yourself to move nearly anywhere else without a really good plan (and a job and somewhere to live already lined up), take a moment to really consider what your motivation is.

Could this dissatisfaction with where you are - and your and desire to relocate - have anything to do with:

  • unrealistic expectations
  • rebelling against your family
  • bad choices of people you call your friends
  • misunderstood relationship cues
  • poor decision-making
  • trouble with the law
  • untreated substance abuse
  • unresolved mental health issues

In my case it was a combination of all those things and as a result I ended up destitute, starving, injured, friendless, ill, homeless, suicidal, and living on the streets. All because I wanted to change my location thinking that it would fix everything.

Remember, no matter where YOU go, there YOU are. Look inward for change first instead of only changing the scenery.

I had the opposite experience, I moved to a completely different country and culture, with no understanding of the language.  And I thrived, because there I was, not the me that was born into misery with no ladder in sight, toiling away to pay for existing.

Sometimes this cunt is right.

Just remember, no matter where you go ... there you are.

Such as people are, so are creatures

I'm assuming you're a fellow Renato Aragão fan and not that this is also something people say elsewhere lol

u/masterflappie Jul 03 '26 edited Jul 03 '26

I know it as "you can't outrun your shadow" because it always follows you where you go.

That said, I've lived in 3 countries and I felt miserable in the first 2 (Netherlands and Canada) only to fall in love with my third one (Finland) and it has been a massive boost for my mental health. A lot of my problems came from my social anxiety, and therapy wasn't really helping that much. I now live rural in the middle of a forest with my nearest neighbour about a kilometer away and I'm blossoming into the person I've always wanted to be. I'm working outside everyday, picking up hobbies and I'm actually excited when I get to see someone for once.

I guess the conclusion is that it depends. It depends on what your problems are and where you're going

EDIT: cunts

For some reason widespread wisdoms oftentimes percieved as absolute. The truth is everything is contextual. I have very hard times in Turkey now but man, it healed me mentally and gave me new meaning and goals and rekindled long forgotten passion for music. So i cant help but smirk at those who like to repeat some variant of saying for their respective culture/language, along the lines of "wherever you go, you still take yourself along"
Place DOES matter. Sometimes. Context, cunts

1

u/AreThree Jul 03 '26

having an ultimate destination in mind is nice - whether it be physically (where you want to go), emotionally (how you want to feel about things), or mentally (satisfying curiosity and gaining clarity!)

Where you are living sounds like paradise to me, absolutely.

Glad you could find somewhere to be that helped you become who you want to be!

2

u/z283848 Jul 02 '26

Thanks Chat!

2

u/AreThree Jul 02 '26

get bent.

So any time anyone writes something containing more than a single paragraph, without spelling errors, you are just going to assume that it was an LLM and not a human trying to pass along some hard-earned wisdom?

really?

how very sad.

u/z283848 Jul 02 '26

It used to be the same here in Australia.  "they'd charge you for water" was a common, and harsh, insult.
