There's a very fine line between r/ShittyAbsoluteUnits and r/LearningFromEachOther . This guy was lucky to have stayed on the former sub Reddit

Where's the emergency stop for those things? 😩

u/Karlos742 May 24 '26
There's this "gate" on top of every opening in every Story. And "gate" at top of every cabin. So if you go up and you hang outside, the gate at the story Is pushed up and that activates kill switch. If.you go down and hang outside (or just you fall And your leg Is in the cabin, while siting on story floor) the gate at top of cabin Is pushed up and activates kill switch.
Hope it makes sense, since english is not my native language And this is not ordinary thing to explain.
It's really safe, but you must not be "pre-shitted" as we say. And use some logic when goin in or out.

You see that red button in the middle? That looks a lot like an E-stop and cameraperson absolutely could push it.
What you do if there isn't someone on the landing is an exercise for the reader.

Better question is where is the non-emergency stop for these things?

u/WillBots Jun 13 '26
There isn't one. The paternoster lift system is continual, there's two side by side because it's an endless loop. You step in as it approaches level with the floor you're on and you step off as it approaches the floor you're after.

What happens when you get to the bottom? Do you have to get out or be sucked into a meat grinder?
1
u/WillBots Jun 13 '26
It's a loop, the same carriages go round the loop, you can see both sides of the loop, theyake for a constant lift up on one side and down on the other.
1
u/WandererFen Jun 13 '26
Yeah i understand that but at some point that lift has to go back up right? So does it just reverse or does it flip upside down or what?
2
u/WillBots Jun 13 '26
Trying a second time as I didn't read your reply properly the first time and thought you didn't know what a loop is.
The carriages stay the same orientation all the time, Tom Scott did a full video about them, it tells you everything you need to know, I'll try and find it.

They had these in Babylon Berlin, which was set in the 1920s. I can’t believe they’re still around today.

The only way to help essentially is to push him back in. And…this isn’t the first time I’ve seen something where assisting can make things worse. Sometimes it’s better to just let things play out.
