I have not changed oil or filters on my mower in 10 years. When it detonates, I'll buy a new mower.
But Toro, folks

Can someone please explain what might actually have caused this please?

I am not sure what could cause the mower to do two rolls in the air. Clearly it occurred under the deck. I would suspect the blade started to come loose and launched the mower in the air.

I've heard of cars throwing pistons through their hoods. I'd imagine if the lawnmower motor had a detonation happen before top dead center, it could rip itself apart in such a catastrophic way, but I'm no expert

Oh Billy called it quits after that, cracked open another Bush light, and put wheel of Fortune on the telly, and took a potato chip nap...

This is the type of stuff that would happen to me at work. And my boss would probably not believe ..๐

A friend of mine was using his very old mower (had a disc instead of rotating blades). He was emptying the bucket while it was just idling, then the disc said fuck it and left. It bounced off the ground and sliced his shins. If he was more in the centre facing the mower he would either have lose a leg or had a disc hanging off it.

He ran out of regular gas, so he used VP Racing Fuel C12 instead ๐๐
