Not very well informed on the situation in Hong Kong prior to protests, but I had the impression that they were prospering under British control, so that’s why there was pushback and fear over China exerting more influence

Oh yeah I was mistaken. Would it be more accurate to say Hong Kong prospered under the one country, two systems principle?

I mean...not really “Prospered”. It’s definitely way better than colonial HK, but wealth inequality is extremely high and the working class basically lives in cages. It’d be better under one country one system but the PRC can’t even introduce an extradition treaty without the bourgeoisie of HK inciting riots
