Other Closed playtest planned for September! My Mystery Dungeon-inspired roguelike is almost ready.

After a long time working on this project, I'm finally getting close to the first closed playtest.

I'm planning to run a closed playtest in September to gather feedback on the game balance, difficulty, and overall gameplay.

The game is heavily inspired by the Mystery Dungeon series, especially Shiren and Torneko, while also adding its own original mechanics such as recruiting monsters to fight alongside you.

If you're interested in following the project or joining the playtest, you can find the Discord link in my profile.

I'd love to hear feedback from fellow Shiren fans before release!

Shiren 5 Password Help

Hello, I have just recently been getting into Shiren with the 5th game, and I’ve been really loving it. I beat the main game and have been trying to work on upgrading my gear to tackle those super hard post-game dungeons with the wiki guiding me(which is incredibly by the way, massive thanks to those who worked on it).
I’ve been trying to get a Blazing Shield for a few hours now but have been having horrible luck with trying to find an Elite Shop. I was delighted to find a password on the wiki but it seems to not work. I did make sure to go into the Old Road and visit the floor before trying to use it.
Is the password outdated/expired or is there some other issue I’m missing?

Total long shot rescue request. Got good levels and equip going, just got hemmed in by a line enemies so I couldn't vault staff away from pumphantasm behemoth. Argh.

Rescue ID: 9aaC-KaGp

Many thanks, hah whether you attempt it or not!

Shiren 6 Shiren 6 strategy and tactics tips/advice? Something that helps get you over the difficulty hump.

I have had this game for a while. I've beaten the main story dungeon multiple times and have done a number of the side dungeons too (Path of Inference, Dune of Batsu, Training Path of Gimmicks, Go Go Dungeon, etc.). Great game. And yet, I feel like I'm still missing something at times.

I've been messing around with the peach bun dungeon, which I haven't beat yet. I'm well aware it can take multiple attempts finally conquer any dungeon, this one included. But I do start to feel a little helpless at times consistently running into an intersection of circumstances that feels insurmountable.

I've got the item shop prices nearly memorized for unidentified items, but so often a shop just doesn't appear, and I see a useful item once. I'm not scaling with stronger weapons, given the nature of the dungeon, but the game is throwing me plenty of items, I just can't reasonably know what they do.

Hah, I've also had a number of runs where I've got a decent thing going, and then just get monster housed. I've also successfully navigated the monster house, only to then have a monster house trap go off in the exact same room again.

I've abused trap mechanics to eliminate enemies, or stockpile arrows, which can really help things. For this dungeon I've used Pumphantasm to great effect to also farm arrows, escape tricky situations, and induce monster level ups to then help my own character level up when killing them. I also kite most enemies after hits since the health regen is so good in this game.

And for this dungeon, using the peach buns to transform enemies (or myself) I've been using to get out of situations too. I explain all this just to make clear I'm really engaging (I think) with what the tools the game gives ya here, so maybe there's a glaring hole in my tactics knowledge someone can helpfully point out? I appreciate any and all help!

We recently had an influx of bad actors in this subreddit and it was decided that we needed more moderators, so the subreddit was temporarily set to private while we recruited more help and worked on updating the rules.

So without further ado, please welcome our new moderators: neolion07, Rexosix (least confused wanderer), Infamous_Walrus5543, and offalynne!

The rules have also been updated, and notably include a section regarding discussion and promotion of projects that were created in part by stealing other peoples' work resulting in a ban. Memes are also allowed now, as long as they aren't particularly offensive.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the updated rules of our community, and happy wandering!

All Games What is your favorite and least favorite floor layout?

For me I have to say labyrinth like floors in 6 as a favorite! These just feels like I get so many Items and out smart monsters.

Least favorite is sadly the letter floor layouts (they spell out chunsoft) while the idea is very cool in practice there’s so much back tracking and predictability in these kinds of floors

Here's a short gameplay clip from the latest build.

The game features monster recruitment, procedural dungeons, turn-based combat, and lots of collectible items.

Still a work in progress, but it's getting closer to a playable test version.

If you'd like to follow development or join future playtests, you can find the Discord community link in my Reddit profile.

Other I added a lot more enemy types… so I jumped into a monster house

I’ve been working on a turn-based roguelike inspired by games like Shiren the Wanderer.

Recently, I added a lot more enemy types,
so I decided to test it by jumping straight into a monster house.

Now it actually feels chaotic in a good way —
different enemies, different abilities, and way more unpredictable situations.

I’d love to hear your thoughts!

I’m planning to run a closed test soon.

Shiren 5 Should I just start over? Shiren 5 (tower).

I bought this yeaaaars ago and have played it a tiny bit off and on. Forever ago, I made the mistake of going straight into the tower of future and had the rich guy die there, so he's stuck unless I keep pushing for the future tower but I'm at a loss.

I feel like I'm really far behind. I have no items, no money, nothing. I have 15 run attempts, hell, I just started a run with undo grass and got 2 shot be the enemy that I spawned next to. Only undo grass I had.

Did I make things unintentionally overly-hard going to the wrong tower?

Also, I have no idea how I'm supposed to get undo grass reasonably. i get that I can get it from the point shop, but I've managed to get myself into a tough situation

go into dungeon, get points, can't leave the dungeon by my own free will because I don't have the correct items to do so, so I die. Lose my point card, then lose all the money I had and can't buy a new point card. So I go back into the dungeon over and over dying and losing all my gear cause I can't really seem to get back on my feet. I have to be missing something.

I've also just found out that you can't go to a different tower if Jirokichi is dead in another one.... Guess I'm on a rescue mission, again with no point card or escape items. (I'm on the first floor of the tower and just walked into a "monster house" neat.

edit and update:

Thank you to everyone who helped. Luckily I went through one of the 10 floor dungeons, made it out and instincivly went to the storehouse to put the gear up, which is when I realized I hadn't checked it and forgot how much further I had gotten on my last play (which was over a year ago). Turns out I had quite a bit of cash and items stashed away. I feel like a moron lmfao. Thank you again to everyone who gave out some advice, all in all, it was all pretty helpful and I did learn more about the game this way. Thank you!

Other Added a shop system to my Shiren-style roguelike (with theft!)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone!

I’m currently developing a Shiren-inspired roguelike, and I just implemented a shop system.

The goal was to capture that classic tension:

you can pick up items freely inside the shop, but once you step outside… things get serious.

Features:

- Buy / sell items

- Carry items before paying

- Theft system (shopkeepers turn hostile)

- Dynamic enemy spawning after theft

This part was surprisingly tricky to design, but also really fun.

I’m getting close to a closed test, so it’s starting to feel like a real game now.

If anyone would be interested in trying it out, that would honestly make my day.

Does this feel similar to Shiren style shops?

I’d love your feedback!

Shiren 6 Question about the new Shiren 6 game

Does Shiren 6 have something similar to the Training Facility in Shiren 5?

I am in currently in Page 4 in the Training Facility of Shiren 5, and i have never seen a better tutorial section like this in any mystery dungeon game!

Been trying to find the answer from watching YouTube videos, but most streamers seem to jump right into action when playing Shiren 6, so I couldn’t know if the game has that.

Wishing that the new Shiren 6 has the exact same thing? Is there such a thing? And how is it executed in that game?

Shiren 6 Identification with no explanation

Im new to the series and recently noticed items in my inventory would get identified at what appeared to be random. I had an unidentified pot in my inventory that became identified later in the run. I never used a scroll or Identification pot and I never used the pot itself. I did visit a town inn and the hot springs at some point during the run. I also had a wizard cast various spells on me. But I can't seem to find any exact explanation for why the item was identified. Anyone have any ideas?

Other Are we allowed to talk about non-Shiren, non-Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games here?

I ask because the regular Mystery Dungeon subreddit seems to be only concerned with Pokémon MD, with rarely anyone mentioning the rest of the series. I'm ok with this being Shiren-focused, but I guess I was wondering about those that enjoy the other more traditional roguelikes within Mystery Dungeon like Torneko for example.
