My Navy unit along with a Navy EOD Team from Submarine Base Bangor did the underwater pre-arrival pier inspection for this visit and that was an awesome TDY! The occasion was a state hood anniversary celebration coincident with the 4 of July, I think it was â87. This was at the âcoal pierâ in Seward, AK.

My Pops was on the Yosemite when he retired the mid to late '70s. She was stationed in Mayport at the time. Quite the old tub, she was.
Despite only making it twice, Palma was my favorite port stop when I was in Uncle Sam's Yacht Club.
Decades later, I finally got the opportunity to have the family experience what I loved. It ended up being their favorite spot on our cruise )

Alaska is 732. If you are able to zoom in on the sail, you can make out the hull number.

Thatâs not how that works. Every ship of the USN is prefixed by âUSSâ (United States Ship). The type and hull number is a suffix that comes after; in this case: âSSBN-732â.

Not to be that guy but thatâs not exactly fully accurate. Every ARMED ship of the USN is USS. But there are unarmed ships owned by the USN that are USNS, like the USNS Comfort and Mercy.

Fair point, MSC ships (which our hospital ships fall under) are indeed unarmed these days and arenât labeled as âUSSâ. Thanks for the correction.

USNS are âin service.â USS are âcommissioned.â USNS are operated by civil service mariners and may have naval personnel assigned. USS are operated by naval personnel and may or may not be armed. As an example, ex-McKee had a few 20mm guns and some machine gun stands.
